  1. Great looking "binder" Love the long nose and their Hendrickson "brother" is there a side road you can practice on? You're empty,I'm guessing less than 20000,Put the aux. In its lowest gear, and see if you can run the main without splitting gears, see where it's governed at before you start out.Shift just below that so it doesn't lock up.It will be easier to use the clutch til you get used to it later. It should drop in around 1500,each double clutch of course. That tranny should be worn in enough to shift easily. When you hit 5th ,run thru the aux to over just like a 4 speed, downshift the same way, watch your temp gauge! I'd check the grease level in the tranny and differential before you leave, good luck!
  2. Truck shop, what process do you use to weld hvy truck frames? I ran a mobile welding truck in the 70s and80s only had stick and propane and acetylene for cutting. I believe the bigger shops are using mig for steel and tig for aluminum. My main customers were excavators and refuse contractors.I use mig for sheet metal and stick for 1/8 and above in my home shop. Also do you run in California? I was googling something else and read a post that California's new emissions laws are going to put 60 percent of small trucking companies out of business!! Not to mention the new laws coming nation wide! I can picture a backdoor support of this b.s. by the NTA, wink wink,to get rid of the big companies competition! It will get curiouser, and curiouser,I predict! The EPA is already after NASCAR and NHRA. It will be the hobby trucks next! We should maybe join SEMA like my fellow street Rodders!

  4. First off,the guys are right, the loggers did water cool their brakes!! There are no Cat Scales in the forests of the Pacific Northwest.pretty difficult to guess the weight of those bark covered logs especially if they get wet! U can be sure they're not grossing 80000 !Out behind the bar,I remembered the name of the place out your way I used to sell wrecked cars to,was Leetsdale Auto wrecking.
  5. Teamster grrrrl,I've never seen the Navistar version, but since most of the cereal companies are based in the Midwest,Navistar may have "farmed out" their conversion to the same fabricator that did the Stoops conversion. You wouldn't think there would be enough call for those trucks to warrant retooling one of their own plants.
  6. The second I saw that drop frame mack I thought of the Stoops trucks.Stoops owned, and probably still does a Freightliner and also a Ford truck dealership in Kansas city.I don't know which one. They also had a trucking Company. They were running those Ford(9000 series I think) air ride cab,Cabover. The ones that on a curve looked like they were gonna turn over!! They pulled 53ft high cube flat floor Vans. They hauled empty containers.I forget for who. They had standard full screws, theMack has a Canadian spread. The Stoops drop frame and rear driveline unbolted from the cab and front frame. It appears the Mack frame is welded.I was driving an Mh like the one pictured, only a single axle. With a 50 ft drop deck "big shot" when Stoops express was in business. I thought what a great hotshot Cabover those would make if you pulled the front drive and made it a single axle.Think what you could load on a53ft flat floor with a 10 ft spread! There was an article in one of the trucking publications about them. They were running double od.trannys,10spds I think.Great pics!
  7. Farmer 52, if you're from Canton you know where Louisville Oh. Is. I was delivering a load of new Ford's at the dealer there in 74, and a young Amishman kept driving by in his buggy. After I got about 3 units off I realized he was checking out the shiny new Ford's !! Didn't have any flat black ones however! Lol
  8. Just thought of this could that UPS 4by4 be for use in Alaska? Do they run there? I've never been there.
  9. Hobert 62, Don't forget to remove the visegrips lol True story...I hung a set of aftermarket duals on my welding truck, was on the last hanger and too lazy to get a half inch wrench,so I used a vise grip. Two years later I'm under the truck doing something and there's the vise grip! A little rusty, but still hanging there!

someone fixed rocker on an 82 r model at . work, this was 6-8 years later I'm under the truck, vise grips still on it where they welded the rocker on. needless to say it got exported afew years later with them still on

I think I "created a monster" with the vise grip thing!  I'm glad I'm not the only forgetful idiot around! If the R model gets "exported" to China the visegrips will feel right at home because Irwin appears to  have " bought the name" and is has offshored the manufacturing process. Predictable right?  Here's 2 facts from my " storehouse of useless information" some older drivers may remember the Suburu "Brat" the narrow unibody pickup with the cheap plastic seats behind the cab.Why would a company that builds quality vehicles put cheap seats in back?Because the seats converted a truck into a sport utility vehicle, lower import duty! I wonder if they included a " disclaimer" to not sit in them while the truck is moving? Same basic reason you see all those little import pickup cab and chassis in the ports. They put the beds on in the port.Is an incomplete vehicle till the bed is installed, lower duty!

I'm sure the R model was exported, was sold in the auction and the vise grips were 10 years old at the time so at least they were American made vise grips

  11. If he had the skill to move that house ,he would have no problem building his own ferry from logs and empty 55 gallon drums. Then he could pull an outside dual and attach a pulley and leather belt from one of those old textile mills and add a brass screw from an old lobster boat !! Nuthin' to it!
  12. Some nice equip.shown today gents! I am casually looking for a toy truck to fix up.High on the list is a B model,or an early 70's diamond reo.I considered doing a "Vintage Air" with the condenser under the stock bumper, because I didn't think there was room between the rad and the shutters on the b. There must be,since the owner of the dump must have put it there. Also, never thought of putting the dash unit under the seat, great idea ! You guys are nothing,if not innovative!!
  13. Wow!which topic? I don't think John Brown was too fond of the scenery at Harper's ferry! Lol It is pretty tho' I think the girl with the "leg up" knew you were watching! Maybe Reliable has a load of Amish wagons! I used to have a local route thru Beaver and leetsdale in the 80's brings back some memories.good pics!
  14. 1958 FWD, Saw your original post, didn't know a Hahn was a fire truck! Thought it was a highway in another country (like the Autobahn) lol didn't pay much attention.Wow that's something! In my mind you were acting from instinct and experience. Also common sense with the seat belt thing! The 1st car I drove legally was a 51 Merc coupe,no seat belts. My dad and I got an aftermarket set and installed them. That was 1962. I've been preaching seat belt use ever since! Those children could have been thrown out on busy 130 without them! Unthinkable! I've corrected several jackknifes, that were past the 15degrees that they say is the point of no return, without even thinking about it,you don't have time to think you just react! I had an emergency side glad hand come off with 8000lbs in the trl. On the cross bronx the trl. Was in the other lane before I knew it! I'm glad it turned out well for you and the kids!
  15. Looks like the old Kb "binder" is embarrassed to park next to the beautiful L J! Lol
  16. Looks like a red c114d Diamond reo next to the Dm mack.
  17. What a beautiful looking horse! Would make a nice "hobby truck" I'd love to have an old UPS Diamond T or reo single axle Cabover, but they seem to have "dropped off the earth" For many years it seemed that every old Cabover in America was going into Mexico.they cut the frame in half with a torch and stack them on another truck or drop deck.(this avoids the tariff you pay to export a truck) Its no longer a truck,it's truck components! Then at the destination in Mexico or central America, you weld it back together and it's a truck again. Those folks have no problem with driving a damn Cabover!
  18. I've never seen a 6 by 6 road horse but makes sense if they run the mountain passes, donner, cabbage etc.You sure couldn't push a Ups drop floor pup!,wonder if you'd be required to chain the steering ? Lol
  19. Refined trucker I assume you own A dump bucket,if you have a wet line and haul hazmat. The best company I was ever leased to was Cardinal transport out of coal city il. They were only loading flatbed and hot shots in the early 90's They had no b.s. truck age requirements 76percent of 100percent terminal pay etc.I see you have a headache rack thought you might own a flatbed.
  20. So SInteresting, I have the greatest respect for John McCain, but I was concerned that his time in the "Hanoi Hilton" may have damaged his health, and Sarah Palin,as president would be unacceptable so I. Voted for Obama. So now John seems to be doing fine...Figures! So now we have to choose between two "non choices",I have no use for Trump, and I can't tolerate any of the Clinton's what a deal!
  21. 68 f model, Don't know about Mi,but here in Florida you can register a road tractor not used commercially as a camper. No cdl required.
  22. Other dog, if you ever pulled in a t.s. wearing that they'd take you away in a strait jacket! I feel sorry for the armadillo,I hope they used lead free shellac on him!
  23. Carlotpilot,It was a Diamond T, now I can picture it!

I have`nt seen one of the old spicers in probably 35 years but with just a few minutes of foolin with one i`ll bet I can still get along with it:rolleyes:

The company my buddy drove for was Chester Sayre, were green and white the dt cabovers were like the ones UPS had in the 60s.Leesburg rings a bell,a lot of horse haulers were based in Va where the horses were raised. They carried a groom in the trailer, got him takeout food the  horses were never unattended! A lot of drivers just drive,Don't understand how trucks work.I can see how they would  be confused. When I was hauling cars out of Dundalk Md. We had a curtainside rack for hauling Mercedes. Was a Gmc conventional ,had a 671Detroit with a 20 speed Spicer on air.The younger drivers were used to driving straight 7speeds and 10 speed rangers, told me how hard it was to drive! Was easier than a 2 speed axle! Had a knob like a 13 speed only 4 positions. If I recall correctly it had the usual blower but a turbo as well, was one of the last 2cycle Detroit's made I believe. Was specd to be a dump or mixer! Could only haul 6 cars and I usually  got 4,didn't need all those gears.

  24. Carlotpilot, that was me on the12 spd Spicer question tnx !The truck in question was a cabover,I forget the make,he hauled thoroughbred race horses,so he had to be smooth! He said his co driver was really terrible on the 12 speed(was used to a 10spd ranger)

    1. carlotpilot

      carlotpilot

lol  lots were terrible on those things .we used to deal with american oil co diamond ts that had them. it was real fun to go out and put one in reverse then tell a would be driver to go bring it into the shop if he was not up on them they would only go backwards no matter where you put the gear shift

Carlotpilot,The first time I ever drove a truck I was nervous and let the clutch out too fast, had the 671Detroit running backwards ! Lol My co driver pulled the shutoff, and I started over!
