  1. There is a perception among "new breed truck drivers" "I ain't driven' no Cabover" While they are in their 2week driving course before they've driven ANYTHING.The major carriers pander to this perception which is I believe there are no class8 Cabover built in America anymore. The carriers want the least experienced drivers that their insurance carriers will permit them to hire! I've driven both including crackerbox Jimmy 7400White "Japanese Freightliners" 9670 " binders" and a few others. My favorite Cabover. Was a MH Mack single axle.It rode best, spring ride too! The flat floor Navistar, however ugly was a good long distance Cabover.I have a slight preference for conventional equipment, but driving a Cabover never killed me! The major carriers like Freightliners because they're cheap. The long hood navistars are better built, except for that fiberglass bubble in the sleeper.
  2. Terry, I like your B model has the L J cab so lottsa room what engine/ tranny combo? Unrelated question,Anyone ever drive a 12 speed Spicer? I haven't but my friend said it was the slickest, fastest shifting tranny he ever drove! He said it wasn't popular because a lot of drivers could never(or according to him refused to learn) how to drive it.Very simple, but entirely different from most other trannys!
  3. Hook n ladder 1, I agree with teamster Grrrl wouldn't be an economical road horse.Plus you know how they ride!! If you must have a Mack, there are a lot of MH Cabover around which are well built and comfortable. However, as Dirty Milkman says there are a lot of "cutoffs" around with any combo you want around, saw a couple on Tampa Craig's list today.
  4. I've only driven one "compact" tractor it was one of those godawful international cabovers with a 5speed column shift.!! Was for Wilson freight off the local 249 extra board. Was wondering why you want one! If you need a short Cabover sleeper the dealers are giving them away! The freight companies have a buyback arrangement with the dealers, usually at 3 yrs so their trucks are always under warranty. The 0/0's want big power "large cars" so the short Cabovers go cheap.
  5. That is a pretty truck, but those fairings are awful low if he's gonna be off the pavement! You can do dump work with a single axle and a tag.The B model I drove in Florida was a stretched single axle(former road tractor) with the tag in the rear.We were dumping in house pads on sugar sand! You had to dump the tag the second you left the pavement or you'd get stuck! Speaking of fancy trucks has anyone seen the new double bunk sterling's?I'm not into new trucks, but they look like something from "Mad Max"!!
  6. I was kinda the "utility" driver for the construction company that was building the city of Margate Florida. Most often I had the B model mack 711 with a triplex. Also a Ford tandem dump F 850 with a 534 with a 5and3 the truck was worn out,so if you forgot and tried to use the aux. It would lock up in two gears so you had to pry it out with a crowbar! Also they had a little 7yd"binder"like the one in the picture. It was in road legal shape and ran well. The others were "job site" trucks ,except for two new Ford 6and7yd dumps. The mack was in good shape but not licensed ran like a raped ape! Had it up to 80 on I95 between Margate and Stuart,It was in 1971.I would be "under the jail" for that today!
  7. Phase one, you're dead right! I'm used to seeing the "shelf" sleeper without the xtra width, was fibreglass I think. But was an option on the C and the H.I never liked the C too much but the sleeper "makes" the truck! How about remove the stock grille and pan but leave every thing else(so it can be returned to stock)and put in a 54 Chevy grille with xtra teeth!
  8. Hvy gunner,I wonder what rpm that 453 is at in od at 55mph? 2cycle Detroit s weren't famous for fuel economy. My dad had a46chevy  flatbed he hauled scrap cars with. I had a 47Chevy fleetline Tudor.his engine blew up and he took the engine out of my car and put it in his truck while I was at school! I got off the school bus and the hood was crooked on my car! I lifted the hood and it fell on the ground. What could I say?I was 14 and he needed the truck to feed me!It was the only Chevy flatbed with a chrome valve cover!

Jack 2052, Hope you find your dad's fire truck, the only on on Craigslist down here in fla was an American La France!Wasn't red!lol.

  9. That's a "cute little wrecker" I need to build one to tow my riding lawn mower.Having been in the towing business I appreciate anything with a winch!
  10. Dirtymilkman where do I join? I'm hostile American and retired!

I'll ask him next week i see him. I thought it sounded high but then again who knows. I always wanted to put one in a 2 ton truck since they are dirt cheap to run around and make noise with.

Saw a 49 Diamond T with one with a 5 spd and a 3sped Brownie was a two ton.Was on u tube lots of fun!

  12. On the topic of the a.......s around us ranchhopper is right! I remember the court case that set the precedent for the "tort cases" of today.A small farmer in the Midwest got his toolshed broken into and all his hand tools stolen twice! Having to buy new tools twice pissed him off so he wired a double 12 gauge shotgun to a kitchen chair at kneecap level and wired the triggers to the shed door! The thief predictably broke the lock and got "kneecapped" he admitted to having broken in the other two times, and sued the farmer for 60000 dollars and won! What we would call poetic justice they called excessive force or some other legal b.s. Was in the late 60's or early 70's so was a lotta money! Made national news.In recent times criminals in Florida have won many settlements over nonsense like getting cut while breaking into someone's house!
  13. Topo, does your military tractor have an Allison? Most of the deuce and a halfs, and five ton tractors in the military did. They seemed to have a pause between shifts, then a big clunk as the thing caught caught!we're very reliable but got terrible fuel economy so the otr companies didn't use them. Is  it a multi fuel?,always liked the way they looked. Some guy near me in Florida was using one for a daily driver! Was for sale on Craig's list.

    1. topo

      topo

BillyT  no Allison .It had a multi fuel till I lost a piston I repowered with a ENDT 673 P I have the 5 speed direct when loaded you can use the transfer case to split shift

  14. Hancock, hope your hip is healing well!,I fell off a little kids bicycle(I shouldn't have been on) My shoulder is just starting to feel better a year later! Maintenance I If you did the paint and bodywork on that 951, I wouldn't bet against you getting the Cummins back together quickly! I'll bet the ghost of BC Fry visits your garage at night!
  15. Truck shop,I'll bet Freightliner would have given him a new one, even a stripped one he could add a sleeper and trim items would be a good deal! Being from the "rust belt"i spent much of my youth doing bodywork and painting rust buckets,I HATE PATINA !! A lot of the morons who post older rides, confuse half ass bodywork and rattle can primer spots with PATINA! Having said that there a handful of really valuable antique cars and trucks where you would destroy their value doing bodywork and paint! like AC Macks and the like.
  16. Two questions for anyone who has the answers. What was the last non computerized Mack? And if you bought that Diamond T glider kit built in Hershey Pa,could you put an older "pre emission" engine and tranny in it like a 300maxidyne and not be held to 2017 emissions standards? I'm not gonna do it,but I'm hearing all the problems you guys have with late model emissions compliant trucks.I'm thinking a glider might be the answer.Do these modern trucks get such improved fuel economy as to justify all the b.s. computers an sensors that drive up maintenance costs?

  17. Kscarbel,It would be ludicrous to assume we are alone, too many documented sightings and encounters by responsible people. My dad was alive when Orsen Welles did that bogus radio broadcast about an alien attack in the thirties I think, and people were committing suicide! Plus to go public about our secret aircraft, stealth bombers and the like that are often mistaken for UFOs,would be giving our enemies classified information.I Jack Nicholson was right "You can't handle the truth"!
  18. I agree! Australia has the most and worst venomous snakes in the world! If I lived there I'd kill ' em' too. I saw a tv show on snakes in Australia.I think it was Queensland where Paul lives. There is a deadly little snake that is found all over this modern city, I forget it's name. The snake catchers get calls all the time!
  19. The two H models and the B are all beautiful! Like the way Ford took the C cab and added the larger sleeper. Became a legitimate contender as an otr horse.Like Mowerman said were mostly " bug" haulers, but my friend hauled steel with one.The first commodity I ever hauled was bedbugs for an Allied Van Lines contractor in a"crackerbox Jimmy."
  20. Farmer,52,was in 89, or 90, Address, was Roaring spring, think was on 220, real small probably out of business.Don't remember the name been too long. Always thought of it as Roaring spring.
  21. Is that circle track or drag racing? If drag what's it turn?
  22. Farmer,52,was in 89, or 90, Address, was Roaring spring, think was on 220, real small probably out of business.
  23. David, I like snakes too ,I give the eastern diamondback a wide berth, but wouldn't kill it unless my life was in danger! We have pygmy rattlers in Florida too, very bad poison, but small. All the others are cool.A black racer for some reason curls up on our windowsill, likes the warm concrete I think. There are no copperheads, water moccasins, or coral snakes in our neighborhood.that takes care of the poisonous ones.I like reptiles in general have a green anole a skink and a bearded Dragon for pets.I once raised four gopher tortoise hatchlings Til they were the size of box turtles, then released them.70 percent of them are eaten by predators before they grow up.I personally wouldn't do it, but I'd rather see a flag burner get a "good west Texas butt kickin'" in the words of Jimmy Dean, than a snake or gopher tortoise get run over!
  24. Sr eHvy gunner, you were worried about investing,I would recommend one of Dave Ramsey's financial advice books. He advocates "cash only" except for your home. You are already following his advice with older paid for cars and tks. Many American adults can't write a check for 500.bucks.Mostly due to credit card debt and general irresponsibility.Sam's club has his books Did. You see the pictures of the bus that ran into a telephone pole in Shop trucks area? Hwy 99 InCal. The old Grapevine.Bad crash should be in your local paper.

Swishy a B model dump truck I once drove was built from a single axle road tractor. We were dumping from a paved street into empty house pads. The tag was in the back, and it was slightly uphill so you cranked the thing wide open in  reverse, ran thru the triplex and the second the drive left the pavement you dumped the tag or you'd get stuck in the sugar sand! My buddy also drove it but he would dump the tag too late and get stuck a lot.The loader operator used  to get pissed of because he would have to drive a half mile to push him out. On the subject of the pushrods I cut one off 3 times and it was still too short!

  25. Everyone of you has a good point!! Tragic how truck drivers can be totally bipartisan, but p.o.s. career politicians cannot bend an inch! I have been apolitical my entire life! I've muted the tv every time anything concerning politics comes on! All I know is each election the choices are poorer than the last! none of the candidates are anyone I would have considered in my worst nightmare! A child could see thru their lives and half truths! ok I'm thru sorry. that was lies not lives, freaking spellchek.
