  1. Sapp bros. Used to have good food too!!
  2. Here's a classic! Most weeks you could get an extra shift@time and a half doing repairs on other railroads cars that came thru our shop, mostly minor stuff, but safety related.A fellow shows up "falling down drunk" and punches in and lies down on a tool box and goes to sleep! He was normally a "helper" but had enough seniority to be a freight car repairman. We worked in teams. One guy would heat the ladder rungs and grab rails another would straighten them with a sledge. The boss said "Eddie, wake up and go to work or go home!"I was the "heater", and Eddie was the "beater" (he didn't have the skills to light the Rosebud torch) Eddie was about 145 lbs and he took a "whistling" swing" with a 10 lb sledge, missed my crotch by 2 inches,I said "Eddie go back to sleep I'll do both jobs" he did,but the boss sent him home.On this RR you could take 29days off without notice, all you got was a letter of reprimand and went back to work.Eddie took 30 days off and the RR fired him.The union got his job back!!
  3. Once again the voices of reason are heard ! Time for another anecdote from my four year career as a union railroader. I'm welding on a freight car we are rebuilding.I'm done so I'm picking up rod stubs from around my area.Guy comes up to me what the f... are you doing,That's a laborers job! Real hard "labor" right? Picking up rod stubs? In the days when the unions were formed to provide safe working conditions,a living wage, prevent child labor etc."Job classifications" we're in the contract So that an older worker who actually did a full days work for 20 yrs could bid on an easier job (which he earned)by seniority. And not be forced to kill himself swinging a sledge hammer or similar task. Also so a job would be done by a qualified person! At some point job classifications became so narrow 3 or more people were needed to do one task! Why in the world do you need a laborer to spend 2 minutes picking up 4 ounces of rod stubs that the welder could pick up?Didn't mention when I was done welding I would sit in the lunch room up to an hour til the line moved, so I could do the same job on the next car!
  4. For what it's worth my wife and I have only been on two vacations in 46 yrs.

  8. Who makes the GAZ 66 4by4 ? Is that a pickup or a big truck? Do you get American "reality shows" in Moscow ? If so have you seen "Cuban Chrome"?

Hi, GAZ-66 is a medium class military vehicle. It was produced from 70's to 90's at GAZ plant in Russia. v8 gasser COE, usually universal military body, van, or different equipment carrier. Might be equipped with mechanical winch. Sorry for the poor foto. I doubt there any American reality show are translated overhere. Some local ones could be catched by TV. Although they aren't my cup of tea. I don't watch TV at all. Just don't have antenna or a cable:)

  9. The 1st Freightliner conventional I saw around Pittsburgh was in 1978 was baby blue, pulled a dump bucket for years. I was gonna build a street rod ,may still but it hit me you can get a lot more antique truck for the money than you can any old car.Plus you can have fun going slow if you have enough gears!
  10. I'm speechless ! Your friend has good taste,which money can't buy !
  11. love the lines of the old "binder" first time I've seen that fender, grille combo, also 1😁 st time I've seen a stack mirror mounted on the hood!
  12. If you like Autocars like I do check out the 75 tandem dump in Hemmings. If the ad is honest you could haul with it tomorrow. Also the 73 kw looks driveable for 8500.
  13. love the lines of the old "binder" first time I've seen that fender, grille combo, also 1😁 st time I've seen a stack mirror mounted on the hood!
  14. Truck shop,so far I've seen some real bargains, from the pictures at least.A really nice looking 72 diamond reo s/a road tractor sold in 2014 for 3500bucks in oh 900k but the cab, fenders, chrome grille stainless bumper looked near new.A very rare 1986 diamond reo with an air cooled Deutz said to run good went for 1800.was gone in a couple hrs. Just got the.New Hemmings,a really nice looking 73 KW twin screw day cab 8v71 10 speed in pa for 8500.Also a 75 autocar tandem dump 350Cummins with a 13 speed,New paint, rebuilt top end and final drive.22500. Said to have been rebuilt for a job that cancelled.
  15. Hvy gunner, saw your post about the guy who passed off his cliff jumping injury as job related, reminded of a co-worker of mine.Monday mrng.1974 I'm pulling on to PA tpke.I see one of our tks.on shoulder.the guy is lying over the wheel.I go up his face is all red and he  Has a black eye! He's a little guy 150lbs 5' 6",his girl friends 200 lb husband caught them in bed,(2nd time!) We were both gonna deliver in pa,then go to Baltimore Md.for a load of Ford fiestas. He asked me if I'd load his cars,And he'd show me how to load the Fiestas. It was my 1st load of Fiestas and there was an xtra unit involved.I said sure.I would have done it anyway, but the (teachable moment) was helpful. So he drives 270mile to Baltimore, and 270 mi back to pgh with a ruptured spleen! Then he parks his tk. At our yard and goes to the hospital, tells the boss he fell off his trailer! He could have died! Must have been a heckuva girl !

Truck shop, that old hay haulin' Cabover reminded  me that the hay haulers of the central valley have some of the sweetest Cabover trucks in America! I call them "class 8 street rods" usually single axles with flatbed doubles,or a tandem flatbed straight truck with one or two trailers. All dressed up with chrome etc.Mostly older Mexican o/o take great pride in their equipment!

  16. The 237 maxidyne when it debuted in 65 I think was argueably the biggest breakthrough in diesel engine technology at the time.It was a turbocharged " high torque rise " engine with a 5 or 6 speed triple countershaft tranny to handle the torque.I'm not an engineer, but I know how they pull! You wind the thing  to 2100, as you pull you can let it drop to 1200 before shifting. On your Cummins or Detroit of that era you have to shift at 15 or 1600,If you lugged it to 1200 it would overheat ,the Cummins often warped or cracked a head! Hence the need for a pyrometer. The first time you drive one and don't let it " drop" it won't shift without grinding, but once you get used to it you're "golden"

  17. It is said to be controlled by the"mob" wouldn't bet against it! Starting in the late 80's the landfills in NYC were full, At that time they were "exporting" bailed garbage to landfills in pretty rural areas of  E Ohio, and Va.One of our o/o  sold his "hotshot" rig and bought two "Large Car" Freightliners and 53ft alum. spread axles.A lot of guys bought high dollar "walking floor" trailers. Those burnt rigs are either walking floor or dumps, can't see enough of them to tell.I'd bet the biggest steak in Florida. Those guys "cut the rates" hence the burnt equip!! As soon as my friend and those who bought the walking floors in the 80's and 90's locked themselves into those big payments, the brokers "cut the rates" The walking floor guys were really screwed,as you contractors know they can only haul certain commodities! Predictably all they could do was haul Fast and heavy!!You Pa guys who are old  enough will remember Uncle Miltie shapp and "operation trashnet"In addition to the aforementioned problems, guys were hauling baled garbage in reefers, then hauling food without washing the trls. So my pal got busted, both rigs on I 80.Are ya' ready 90k gross, speeding of course, logbook that were a museum exhibit!! The fines were like the national debt! As if all that weren't enough the folks in the little towns where the garbage was going were pissed, began picketing the landfills(wouldn't you!).I was running across 80 every wk. To new England and the Bronx with insulation. There was at least one garbage wagon rolled over each trip!

  18. I dig superliners in general and this is a nice one! However, the two tone paint job makes the hood look shorter and the long hood is one of the nicest features (appearance wise) of the Superliner.Just an opinion, and as I've said before "opinions are like a..holes,everybody has one!
  19. what a great looking truck! Looks like a Tonka toy! We're all big kids anyway, how many yards will that "bucket"hold?
  20. If it's a 5speed. It's a maxidyne industructable with a good driver,that's a bargain!
  21. Looks like a fire company's ambulance or equip. Truck. That model is the best riding Cabover I ever drove! Would make a unique camper, guaranteed to outlast the others!
  22. Hobert, Mulberry is a tiny agricultural town near Lakeland.the orange growers are having a major slump due to to a disease that attacks their trees. That tanker looks like the kind they use for irrigation. Maybe they are selling excess equip. Looks pretty solid.
  23. That is a baaad K whopper! I should move to Australia!!
  24. Don't get me wrong,I support organized labor(as it was meant to be,not a free ride!) I was once a freight car repairman at the long defunct Pgh and Lake Erie RR in Mckees Rocks Pa.My 1st day I'm watching this really old guy dragging a sheet of 3/4"plywood,I'm thinking what a hard worker! He dragged it under a caboose and went to sleep on it in plain view!! You start out as a laborer then a helper or freight car repairman. So I'm a laborer and I'm sweeping the floor and this guy comes up to me What the f..k do you think you're doing?,you're working too hard ! You're making us look bad! I'm not breaking a sweat, easiest job I ever had!
