  1. Funny story about tube type tires. My agent and friend and I were unloading insulation in the South Bronx.Hooker in the adjacent storefront etc. He had a good running s/a road commode he paid 2500.for,strng tire going flat.Bought a CASE of rattle can tire inflaters! Kept adding air to his tube type tire til we met at the T/A at xit 4 in Jersey. He had a tube put in at the T/A.Solid 70's white Cabover slpr 250 Cummins 10 spd. This kinda nonsense was an everyday thing out of my term.We had lotsa fun!
  2. A mile 1989.for a tractor trl .25cents a mile for a co driver ! It was Friday afternoon,1500mi .A one man run. One of our o/o took his wife in his S 10 pickup and put the 300 pair of gloves in back! Kinda reminds me of the bulbs and batteries! One of my buddies worked In Homestead Works in the locomotive shop. They routinely would punch each other in and out(when one guy stayed home).A United steel worker got 1 wks of vacation for every wk worked.20yrs wkd. 20wks vac!wouldnt
  3. Gray hair,u still awake? When I owned the hotshot rig I was leased to cardinal transport ( not cardinal freight carriers,a rate cutting dry freight outfit) we ran out of warren oh.One of our accts.was a union co that maintained power plants and paper mills. There was a power plant in Colorado springs co.The workers needed 300pair of welding gloves on Monday morning or they wouldn't work. That's about 150lbs.They were paying 1.40
  4. Gray hair I lost my keyboard again,I'm digitally. Challenged! I could go on til daybreak on this topic first the half rate backhaul, you picked a fronthaul at full rate(twice master freight rate)based on the fact you deadbeat home.then you pick a backhaul at master
  5. Happy birthday(a little late) I was a union car hauler before a union card became a way. To avoid a days work! What a small world,I used to haul steel coils  out of Homestead  works of Us steel (where the United steel workers were born out of the ashes of the Homestead riots in the1890's) to Gate 10 Lackawanna N.Y. US steel works! five years later the car hauling company's,had something called a half rate back haul.you picked a

You're dead right! They are both "at the trough" did I spell that right?( the receptacle a pig eats out of) I'm very much convinced that anyone who thinks either one cares about anyone but themselves,is very naive!

  7. Mrs mack Paul ,you mentioned the Hand built Hippo,Our freightliner was originally built by consolidated freightways mechanics in their Portland Oregon shop.they needed a short lightweight tractor that could pull longer trailers and haul more weight, hence the aluminum cab.this being the result of heavily enforced weight and length laws. The infamous DOT officers! I suspect they only wanted to get their cattle and freight hauled in Australia.

Thanx for the reply on Aussie truck laws! Was as I thought.I don't suppose you have truck stops in the outback lol,,

Lost my keyboard again! Do you have plug in coolers in your trucks like US drivers  have? Australia is a modern country, but your cities are a "ways" apart! Some otr drivers here have little charcoal grills they carry for a change from t.s. "swill"! I suppose you could do  a "Bear Gryll" Thing and roast some roadkill, time permitting.you have a Federal, must be the model that resembles a cross between a Diamond T and a GMC. Rode a school bus that looked like that. The 50's Federal used an International cab and their own front end, weren't many made, very unique grille assembly.

Yeah Billy long way between drinks out here so to speak

No plug in coolers and our truck stops are pretty lame by US standards we have stricter length and width laws than the US but we go a lot taller and are allowed higher axle loads

Speed limit on Road Trains is 90 km/h which must be about about 57 MPH the rest of the trucks B doubles and normal semis 100 km/h or 60 MPH

You cant really go any faster on a lot of the roads the tyres get hot and to many blow outs

heres a picture of my old Federal working if your interested

Also liked the Cattle Carter's,will watch the whole thing later.Love to have the old Leyland!Got one of your little bearded dragons for my grandson.I bet you roast them on a stick in the outback! .smart little lizard, gets all excited when I bring him breakfast.(worms and romaine lettuce). Did you see the silly looking diamond t?that thing had a 4cylinder  jeep engine in front of the main engine! Only kicked it in when pulling a hill or needed xtra power!

  9. I admit to being an anachronistic curmudgeon, that's not in the dictionary,it's an old f..k that liked things better 40 yrs ago! However only an idiot would ignore a reasonable safety feature like ONE rear camera. My friend, and business partner was changing a light on the back of his flatbed, and some stroke backed into him!crushed his pelvis and a few other things! They said he'd never walk again, but he was a hard headed fella and learned to walk again!Obviously the other fellow wasn't paying attention, but the camera would have saved my friend! The wiring harnesses on any modern car or big truck would put a NASA engineer in the psych ward! I call the devices on a modern car to "save us from ourselves" Incompetence mitigation devices! Defensive driving makes 90percent of these devices unnecessary! There are a few I advocate...abs brakes, air bags, and the aforementioned rear view camera.
  10. K All there is no rhyme or reason concerning prices of antique big trucks and components! That pristine diamond reo that sold in Medina ohio that I would have hitchhiked the 1000 mi. To buy sold for 3500. A beautifully   restored B75 in Washington state is for sale for 17k What can you buy for 17k in the auto world? a stripped Kia reo!  what can you buy off 3500,? A 10 yr old 200k stripped Kia reo!Nothing against kias they are reliable cars, but as boring as my wife's corolla! We as truck drivers/afficianados,not the "steering wheel holders" who couldn't tell you how a diesel is different from a gas engine, are fortunate to be able to recognize quality.

Happy birthday, 59 isn't "old" a few years ago I met  a 74 yr old who had just ordered a new tractor! Same to our 46 year old who is a veritable embryo!lol.

  11. Kscarbel, ,does it not get curiouser and curiouser concerning the new oils! Since 1978 I have been using non synthetic rotella t in every internal combustion engine I owned.15/w40.my cousin was an o/o,a diesel mechanic, and had an airframe license.a very well rounded dude! One day I was building him a hydraulic tank to his dump trailer, and he asked me what oil I used in my welder and truck.I said Quaker state deluxe. He went into a long profane rant about the attributes of rotella,I've been using it ever since! With two exceptions. My wife's first corolla an 03,called for 10w30 rotella only has it special order, so I used castrol.it was totaled in a flood. Her New corola calls for ow/20 synthetic.Once again I used castrol.castrol edge wasn't available in my county until I talked the local Sam's club to stock it by the case.0w20 is what many new car mfgs. Call for. O means nothing right? How can you have no viscosity?
  12. Could have potential,if not the pocanos are a nice place to rip!

Mowerman are there many Brownies around for sale? They're a planetary aren't they? Would need to get some driveshaft built.

  14. I had a British friend who was an o/o who used to run in the Alps( several countries) said that there was an upgrade that you pulled for 8 hrs. had to have a pee jug on the floor and you're lunch in a bag within reach! He said all the drivers carried a tow bar that fit the trucks from their country.French,British,Italian, trucks had different tow bars! This was in case you broke down,no road service,or many truck stops.I've always wondered what it would be like to split a triplex or quad left handed ! Maybe there are more "leftys" in the UK and Austrailia! Lol There is a u tube video of a driver in the city in Austrailia running a B model with a flatbed Shifting a quad left handed, the fella's really good! Fun to watch!
  15. Lotta equip. For 35k
  16. Freightrain, he used a High binder cab and chassis. They called it an Emeryville which it may have been( the chassis) but that's not an Emeryville cab it's a "High binder".
  17. The first big truck pickup I saw was at a t.s. show in s cal. In 89. Someone removed the cab from a late model F350 p.u.and replaced it with an early 70's KW conv. Cab. Left the Ford bed and fenders.looked factory. The blue B model looks even better. The modified B model rear fenders make the truck!
  18. I know you guys are gearheads right? If you haven't heard about the truck an engineer named Lloyd Wolf designed, built and patented,it will blow your mind! During ww2 they needed powerful trucks to haul tanks and other military equip.diesel engines light enough for a motor truck weren't powerful enough before turbo and computer managed systems.wolf took an international cabover and chassis and put two gmc 6bangers (gas) side by side on a sliding framework. The main engine was a stick shift, the second engine was an automatic which kicked in when it was needed! Hooked them together with a chain or gears to a standard truck differential. The second engine idled when at highway speeds to save gas, much like today's hybrid cars. The whole framework, with engines, etc slid out the front for service. In 7 minutes! The whole deal can be googled, was in Hemmings in 2014.shows an early 50s "cornbinder" cabover.
  19. Every builder incl.mack has good and bad engines or great and not so great engines! Just ask the owner ( or knowledgeable driver)preferably more than one about price And reliability.

  21. Today's topic is"pain in my heart" looking on an old truck paper listing under Diamond Reo's sold T auction. Pristine 1972 DR. Single axle tractor,Continental 6banger,gas.4speed. a little strange, but they unbolt,or a "brownie" could go behind it. Shiny black perfect stainless grille and bumper, the pretty ribbed kind no dents,70percent virgin drive tires full length horns and covers, deluxe bullet cab markers white cab.(The make not the color) nice interior.3500.BUCKS!!
  22. lost my Damn keyboard again! That was a 67 American la France fire truck 6cyl Detroit, auto trans probably Allison says nds battery and windshield. 2500bucks.Looks like just surface rust no visible dents. Some kind of spots on cab roof, maybe tree sap.The truck body looks really solid. If you are a fire truck guy, worth a look.Fanning springs Florida.
