B61 Getting Closer To Paint
usmcjimbo replied to usmcjimbo's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
WE finished painting the cab interior/exterior over the weekend - project starting to come to a close. The red came out even better than WE had hoped -
WE sub out the sand blasting to a local guy here who does a good job for us. WE have a sand blaster unit and looked into doing it ourselves, but environmental issues and compliance challenges ended that project. WE demostrated a "soda" blaster, but just did not have the necessary abrasiveness we need to properly prepare frames, dump bodies etc for painting. If you don't get the surfaces really clean and free from all old paint, rust etc. the paint won't adhere properly and you will get comebacks.

It is a former Rinker truck out of Florida that was part of the CEMEX-Rinker Materials purchase a few years ago. Ready Mix USA is part of CEMEX. They have removed all of the tire inflation/traction systems off of all these trucks. Some of the barrels we are going to repaint - some they are going to replace with new barrels. Can do a much better sand blasting job with the barrels off.

First of 6 complete sand blast and repaints for Ready Mix USA - Knoxville. Great customer, final paint will be white with black frames; we are also polishing the outer aluminum wheels.

DuPont Industrial DTM is all we use for frame paint - fills in imperfections really well. It is pretty expensive, but does a great job and that is the whole idea. -

According to our painter it is DuPont Industrial DTM for all frame painting we do. It is EXPENSIVE but it covers well and looks good when you are done. -

WE have a really good group of 10 body shop technicians and a great painter who all take a lot of pride in the work they do. It gets pretty cut throat trying to compete with gypsies painting outside or without a paint booth with no overheads, EPA requirements or OSHA laws to comply with. In the end fast turnaround time, quality and the fact WE have been in business for 45+ years keeps our big fleet customers like Harrison coming back to us. -

WE use aluminum foil a lot - works well on hard to cover stuff plus if you are careful you can reuse it sometimes. This customer runs a bunch of Mack dumps, this one is for show only -

Ran the M123 when I was in the USMC. We hauled tanks, amtracs, tracked artillery and construction equipment. Not very fast, but would pull anything you hooked to them. Trucks had Cummins V8 engines, 5 speeds with 2 speed transfer cases and were 6x6. Mine had dual 45,000 winches on the back as well. The 14:00 x 24 tires on budd split rims were a load to change and fix! I think the tractor itself weighed nearly 40,000. Put nearly 10,000 miles on one in Okinawa. .

I drove the Super Econodyne packaage about 3 months ago - very nice set up. WE demonstrated an M-Drive with a 12 speed OD and 3.08 gears for a customer hauliung 50k+ on flatbeds - they loved it. I like the direct drive, but once you get over 1550 ft lbs you have to go up the the 16210C or higher if you want to stay with the 10 speed.to handle the torque - all OD transmissions. M-Drive/I-Shift is a game changer for fleet business.

WE are in the process of delivering 16 2014 CXU613 56" flat tops with MP8-445, 12 speed M-Drive "direct" and 2.64 rear end gears to a tanker fleet. Beautiful trucks - drove one yesterday for about 20 miles - smooth as silk.

Beautiful Brockway! My grandfather had a gravel pit in Whitesboro, NY with a 1954 International tandem dump with a gas engine and 5x4 and a Brockway 158 tandem dump truck with a Cummins engine and a 5x3. I spent every chance I could with him at the gravel pit and learned to drive in the Brockway when I was about 10. The Truck was red and he put "Big Jim" on the grill plate - I was the proudest kid in town. He died in 1970 when I was 12 and we sold the gravel pit, the loader and all the trucks and equipment. Great memories. Going to try to get up for the Brockway show in Cortland this year. Love those Brockways!
