  1. A 1988 RD would not have shutters.
  2. 1965 was about the time that Mack began using the "fire ring" type head gaskets on the 711. This stopped a lot of the chronic head gasket failures that the 711 was prone to previously. Look at the head studs. If it has all 5/8 head studs then it is equipped with the fire ring head gaskets. If it has 3/4 head studs at the corners of the heads and the rest of the head studs are 5/8 then it has the old type head gaskets. Other than that, not much difference in terms of durability compared to a 673, and the 711 has a little more horsepower & torque. Yanking out that duplex and replacing it with a quad box is a very smart move.
  3. The late model Internationals at work with Delco alternators do that too. The old Leece Neville alternators did that. I'd always just bring the RPM's up gently to the point where the voltmeter "spiked" up to 14 volts, then it would keep charging after that even at idle.
  4. Upon re reading your original post, I see that you've got a TRD77 trans. I'm not sure if a clutch brake setup was ever available on the 77/770 series "baby" transmissions. You may be SOL in that case. A clutch brake isn't something you can just "add" if there was originally no provision for one. You probably have a push type clutch, so that would rule out the possibility of using an input shaft mounted clutch brake. The old Mack type clutch brakes used with the push type double disc clutch on the 72/720 series transmissions was mounted at the front of the countershaft., never seen one on one of the smaller transmissions though.
  5. Even if the trans is out, I always put a 2 piece clutch brake in. Makes it easier "next time" someone f***s one up.
  6. Rob, it sounds like that ball bearing at the back end of the thru shaft went bad. As far as oil level, initially fill the upper & lower compartments (and the power divider on the front diff), then once in service just check the bottom compartment.

  10. You'll also gain a few MPH on the top end with the larger tire diameter. Of course this comes at the cost of slightly reduced startability in low gear, but if it's a "toy" truck that won't be a major consideration.
  11. Telling us what model of turbocharged engine resides under the R400's hood would make this question much easier to answer.
  12. We got lots of rain here, but nothing like they did to the south & west of here, that's where a lot of people lost their homes. The Fox River was just about out of it's banks coming thru this area due to all the rain upstream. Last week the boss sent me out with a load of sand that was to be used for sandbags around an apartment complex right down next to the river. Had to wait for the customer to show up and I had a chance to survey the situation. At that point the water was a couple of inches from running over the parking lot, and the apartments had an underground parking garage! It was just awesome the way that river was moving, the sound was like a constant roaring from the water swirling around some bridge columns right near there. Scary actually. I've lived here for 23 years and never saw it that bad.

  15. Yup, that photo is the stock setup, but all the ones I drove still had the round knobs on 'em. Rod, I can see why you guys down under may prefer a different type of "bend" on the sticks when you're sitting on the right side.
  16. The quad box shift levers in a B model always worked just fine for me in their stock configuration.

  18. Piston ring & cylinder liner wear. In my experience, Mack engines exhibiting this type of behavior usually need an in frame overhaul very shortly. If it's actually blowing oil out the breather, that's pretty bad. Also, bad exhaust valve guides can allow exhaust to leak by into the rocker arm compartments under the valve covers which also will pressurize the crankcase.

  20. A couple of years ago, I helped a friend of mine get his B61 with END711 running for the first time in more than 10 years. Yes, I said more than 10 years. Once we freed up the rack in the injection pump, and made sure the engine oil & coolant were topped off, it started and ran just like it was used yesterday. I'm betting the V*lvo junk wouldn't be capable of that.

  22. That would be the "2 stick 6 speed" TRXL 107 or TRXL1071. As has been said, Lo on the compound was designed to be used with the main in 1st, then all 5 gears on the main can be used with the compound in hi. In reverse, 1st is such a low ratio it is rarely needed, 2nd and 3rd are the most useful ratios, and 4th and 5th are useful if you have to back up a long ways (on hard ground). If it's the TRXL1071, it has a deeper reduction in lo (lo 1st was about 22 to 1, vs about 14 to 1 on the TRXL107. When I drove a TRXL 1071, I found I could 2 hand split shift it from 2nd lo to 1st hi, the ratios work out perfectly, run it up against the governor in 2nd lo, take both sticks out of gear, and as the RPM's are falling off shift 'em into 1st hi. Works slicker than sh*t.
