74 Mack Rmodel Project
JBushneck replied to JBushneck's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
The Rmodel did great driving the the National truck show in York pulling one of my AB’s. Have a few things I want to improve but otherwise a great ride. Hoping to take to Macungie for a day. -

Well I achieved the goal I set out on back in December. Completed the 74 Mack Rmodel for a show today. Towed on of my ABs behind it on the trailer. Still have some bugs to work out and some small details but other than that project complete. Time to look for the next one. -

Well today was a big day. Pulled the Rmodel out of the garage for the first time. Had to remove the light and horns and drive it out in the rims to fit through the door. All the tires are now on it so remainder of the work will need to be done in the drive way. Have some bugs to work out and some small things to wrap up. On track to make a truck show in early May. Time to start looking for the next project. -

Had some extra time this afternoon so was able to take advantage of the nice weather to paint the fenders and install them. Now need to run new wires to the lights and blinkers once I install them. -

Was able to install the radiator this weekend as well as fix the oil leak. Knocked out a lot of small things and created a list of even more . Goal is to paint the fenders this week and to the install wood deck on the flatbed next weekend. -

Time sure does fly. March was busy but I found time to work on the truck. The little stuff takes forever. I did locate a flat bed body for the back and have it roughed in. Last weekend i started the engine and discovered a small oil leak so I’m going to take care of it before the fenders go on. Hoping to set the radiator this week install the driver side fuel tank. -
Great Bare chassis for someone one looking to build heavy spec DM800. 26’ of triple frame. Very low miles were on the truck. Bought for a project but have moved onto other one. $3500

Took a few minutes this evening to wash some of the engine components before I paint them and reinstall onto the engine. Goal is not to get greasy on the assembly. -

Original engine was a Mack ENDT 675. I was able to purchase a Mack MR fire engine that had a EM6-237. Have to swap a lot of things over because of the different style trucks but over all the new engine ran much better when we drove the truck home. -

2 part answer to your question. The truck was in NY at my fathers and I have been bringing it down piece by piece as I assemble it. I have decided to put a newer engine in it with a Jake Brake. -

This Mack is not going to be a slammed rat rod. I have it on rims so I will be able to get It out of the garage. When finished I will put the 11R-22.5 tires back on. The disadvantage of only having an 8’ door is I’m limited to project size and have to get creative. To skydawgs question-I’m by myself. No other help on this project. -

Here is another update. Was able to get the rear and the front end back under the chassis. Took advantage of the nice weather and painted the cab. Now to finish hooking up air lines. -
Steering box off of 74 Mack Rmodel. Comes with the air assist setup as well. Will also throw in the steering arm. $250. Prefer pickup.

Went to Florida for the weekend so didn’t work on the project until after work today. Was happy my crossmembers were finished when I got home so I was able to install them and remount the spring hangers and springs. Finished the day with some paint on the back of the frame. Next step will to pull the rear back under and remount and then if weather is decent over the weekend put some paint on the cab. -

Was able to get the cab in position. Still much to do but on track to finish by May. Waiting on cross members and fuel tanks to come back from sand blasting shop. Plenty of small things to stay busy on. -

Dash was in decent shape just needed a good cleaning and some paint refreshing. Have not found a decent original steering wheel yet so I painted one of the modern black ones. I’m sure the paint will wear off but works for now. -

Warmed up the garage this weekend and made some more progress. Was going to paint the cab off of the frame but didn’t want to take the chance of scratching while putting it on so set the cab on the chassis. Still have to move it forward but have a few things to do first. -

Have made progress with the cab. New wiring harness installed and dash is going back together. Got a little carried away and stripped the frame all the way down. Waiting for some warm weather to paint and start putting back together. -

Since someone asked. A little more on the truck. It has a ENDT675 Mack engine with a Mack 5speed. Rear ratio is 4.25 and has a wheel base of 147”. Great set up for pulling my 20’ car trailer. -
