'59-'62 G model Mack in So Cal (save it from scrap!)

Shutterstat leaking
Tony Ingram posted a topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Found an air leak on my shutterstat valve where the rod comes out. Got a 61' G model with an NH250 Cummins. What seals the air inside the cylinder? There are 2 rubber type plungers that are inside the cylinder and a smaller rubber dome shaped piece towards the top where the shaft comes out of the cylinder. Is the smaller one towards the top where it seals? It doesn't fit snug around the shaft. Has anyone rebuilt one of these with parts from a local parts store? If so what did you use? I would upload a pic but my images always fail to upload. The new format on this site is terrible, at least for me to use. The old site was a lot more user friendly for us technology inept. Thanks in advance. -
Need help identifying Cummins engine
Tony Ingram replied to Tony Ingram's topic in Engine and Transmission
Thanks for all of the info fellas! -
I've picked up a 61' G model a few years ago from the original owner. He told me it had a 250 Cummins in it. This truck had the original plates on it with a 62' registration tag, original title, it was pretty much a time capsule. I have tinkered on Mack engines but have little knowledge of Cummins. It has a turbo on it and a tag on the fuel pump says NT-280. There's another tag on the drive pump that says NH 250. I was under the understanding that a 250 Cummins didn't have a turbo and I'm assuming you could've put one on at a later time but he seemed to have kept the truck all original. Can anybody with any knowledge of Cummins give me any tips how to better ID the engine? I've got pics of the engine and tags but can't upload any. The site tells me the pics are over 14mb. I'm not computer saavy.

I've been out of the loop for some time now. Decided to get out of the heat and crappy air of California's Central Valley and head west to the Central Coast. 60-70 degree temps year round and clean air has been good the last year and a half. Only bad thing is I sold my place to move and my Nack collection took a hit due to the fact I wouldn't be able to find a place to store all three. It was a tough decision to thin the herd but it will be a much greater quality of life for the whole family. I sold my H63 and H61 to Brad in NC but kept a completely original, one owner 61' G Model. Currently renting a place with no RV storage so the G is safely tucked away at a buddy's trucking yard until I can buy a place with a small RV storage. Whenever that day comes it'll be great to be able to work on the girl year round without getting a heatstroke like I typically did in Bakersfield. Shitty thing is 2 weeks prior to moving the family over here where I'd been working for 6 months I was taken off work due to a back injury. Workers Comp here is a complete joke. I work for the state but this department needs a complete overhaul. Needless to say I was forced to go through all the hoops they require and had to go under the knife of a state quack. At 41 yrs old this wasn't what I'd planned but had no choice in the matter. No relief after the surgery and an epidural a few months later with no results I was able to choose another Dr. Come to find out there were 2 injuries and only 1 was addressed. Not what I wanted to hear. 2 more epidurals that did not provide any relief and waiting for another approval for another surgery to fix what the other so called Doc overlooked or decided not to fix it. Other than all that BS and not being able to do anything pretty much cause I'm in constant pain, the family loves it here. I figured I'd be catching waves like I used to on vacation here but it hasn't turned out that way. Could be worse but I gotta get fixed so I can get back to work before I get forced into retirement. I've got faith in this new Dr and praying it works out cause I really don't have a plan B. I've got the career I'd always wanted since childhood and I definitely don't want to go out this way for sure. Anyway that's what's been happening with me lately. Haven't had any truck progress to post but it's been great to follow everybody else's projects. Haven't seen hide nor hair of Rob, Morgan, Paul VanScott or Garth. Anybody know what's happened to them boys? Seems I don't recognize many folks on here anymore other than Super Dog who always seems to be cornering the market on all of the barn finds.

I agree on keeping it too or if you'd like to free up some shop space you could store it at the beach in CA. at my place, no charge. -

Nice. Doesn't get any better than an H63. I ended up moving to the beach and had to sell my H61 & H63 to Brad Wikes cause space over here is a premium. I kept my 61' G model cause it was the cleanest, most original one of my bunch and I'm holding out hope that when I buy a place I can find a house with a small RV parking spot for it. Been a few years since I've gotten to tinker on anything and I sure do miss it but clean, cool air and being able to surf anytime has lessened the pain. I sure don't miss the smog and 110 degree summers of California's Central Valley at all. Good find and hope you get to have a lot of fun with it! -

Glad to see Brad is taking my old blue H61 out and about. -
H61's?
Tony Ingram replied to Bigdogtrucker's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Relocated to the beach so finding a lot big enough to store 3 trucks wasn't realistic. I kept my 61' G Model. It's too clean and original. Pretty much just needs to be taken apart, painted and put back together. RV parking will be a priority while buying cause I'm not getting rid of all of my trucks. Brad seemed like a good guy. I know he'll fix them up right and appreciate them. I know he just went through a split with the wife and she took down his web page. He has a FB page now. Brads Classic Trucks. -

Found a decent H63 for sale in Winnipeg if anybody's looking for one. Says it runs and drives. Somebody better snatch her up.

G Model Mack
Tony Ingram replied to Tony Ingram's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Got the G home yesterday, spent half the day cleaning out the inside. Underneath all the dust and dirt was a pretty nice interior. All the gauges and labels are in great shape. I even found some old emergency road reflectors still in their boxes, two aluminum thermos looking road flare holders full of flares. Cab jack has a bad seal and one of the rams is leaking pretty bad so I couldn't jack up the cab. Gonna pull two rams from my stash to stick on there and hope I have the old jack from my H63 laying around so I can check out what's under the cab tomorrow. Will keep you all updated with what I find. So far so good, I'm impressed with how well this old boy took care of this truck. He definitely took pride in his truck. He was proud to sign over the original title and hand me the ignition key. Hope to hear it fire up soon. -

Trust me if I had the room it'd look like Sanford and Son at my place. I see lots of things I'd like to drag home but mama keeps me in check. -

Tires on the G model are 22.5" by the way. Here's the REO. The REO has been there quite sometime as you can tell by the tree growing up between the grill and bumper. The grandson says he plans on restoring the REO at some point but I hope he atleast cuts down the tree soon. Fortunately it hasn't done any damage other than bending the grill in a tad. -

Made a deal on the G model today. Gotta great deal I think for $1,800. Pick it up on Friday. I'll post a lot more pics once I get it home and cleaned up a bit. Has been sitting for a long time and the windows have been down so it's awful dusty and dirty but gave it a good look over today and from what I can tell it pretty much looks like it rolled off the assembly line. Has a 250 turbo cummins with a triplex. Said he parked it in 84' cause he had a fuel problem. Thought it was a leaky tank but the tanks are original Mack tanks with factory tags still on them and they looked pretty good. Couldn't jack the cab up, prob. needs some oil in it but it still has the original handle for the jack. Looked to me from what I could see the fuel filter was cracked on top and that may have been his problem. I plan on getting it home, cleaning it up and will probably have to wait until after summer vacation to really get to tinkering on it but like I said I'll keep everybody posted. Mama said this is definitely the last one I can drag home. He had a clean REO out on his place that's obviosly been there for years. Has a crane on the back and said the truck still ran good but he parked it because the crane got weak. Pics are posted below.. -

It's far from finished. Got sidetracked with an H61 I'd bought to get it up and running. Changed my mind on a couple of engines but have finally chosen the one I'm gonna stick with. Gotta fab up new brackets for that. Not a ton of work left on the chassis but the cab needs to get the sheet metal finished. -

Talked to the grandson today, truck is safe from the scrapper. Told him if I didn't end up with it I know somebody who'd definitely be interested in purchasing it. -

I'm supposed to meet with the owner the end of the week to talk it over. The old timer was quite the junk collector. Glad I happened to stop by and check up on him. He recently had a leg amputated due to diabetes and his grandson had already cleaned out some tractors for scrap. His grandson was bout ready to scrap this old girl. If I don't end up with it I'll definitely pass the info along because all this thing needs is to be hosed off, get her running and enjoy. There's no damage or dings anywhere that I could find on it. It's definitely a gem. Mama said "you already have 2 in the rv parking, guess another won't make too much a difference". Good thing is all 3 will fit just fine with several feet to spare. Got the H61 back on the road, would be nice to get this G up and running then get back to the H63 restoration. Getting sidetracked with other trucks is dragging out the process but the challenge of finding trucks and getting them running again is the best part for me. I'll keep everybody posted on what happens. -
I ran across this original owner G Model about 5 years ago. Pretty uncommon to find one of these out here on the west coast. Been going by every now and then to see if he'd ever like to sell it. He bought it new in 62' and used it to haul hay and produce here in the California Central Valley. The truck is completely original, all the badges, trim, even the original tanks are on the truck. It has a 250 cummins with a triplex and said it ran when he parked it in his front yard back in the late 80's. He was quite the tractor collector too but now that he's in his upper 80's he's looking to off load some stuff. He wanted 5k-6k for it back in the day but has recently called me asking $2,500 for it. I think I could probably get it for $1,500-2000 but this would be truck #3 and mama might not be too happy with me. I remember someone once telling me that one truck leads to two leads to three..... Would be nice to have a small collection of cabovers though, would fit nicely with my H63 and H61.

It's cracked completely all the way around but for about 2". Darn near split in two. I originally thought about having it welded up but figured it would just crack in two afterwards from the stress.

All the other aluminum hangers are in good shape on it, just bummed the one rear hanger is shot. My water pump should be here in a few days and once I get some rear hangers we'll be back on the road. This is my 7 yr old son's truck. He suffers from a rare eye disease that left him blind since birth but he knows all the hand tools and parts of the truck by feel. The smile he gets when we drive it around is priceless. Hoping to get it roadworthy again before April. There's a Natl Street Rod show in town we wanna take it to. A few years ago we took it there and amongst all of the $100,000 cars, it was the talk of the show. Everybody wanted to know about it. It's a great story, a friend of mine stumbled upon it on Craigslist, the owner knew the rear but not what model it was. Good thing for me cause you can't find these H61's pretty much anywhere. He bought it and parked it since 1974 on his ranch with hopes of restoring it but never touched it again. I got her home, cleaned all the mice droppings and nests out of the intake ports and manifold, changed the fluids and within a couple of days she fired right up and was as smooth as a sewing machine. These old trucks never cease to amaze me. My boy and I have had a lot of fun tinkering on these. Getting ready to drop a Big Cam III into my 57' H63 and sending the cab to a guy to finish off all the sheet metal work on the cab. I spent 2 years doing the work myself and found it way too tedious. I enjoy workin on the chassis a lot more than body work. Hoping within a few years the H63 will be done and then we'll tear his H61 down and get started on it. His will go back as close to original as possible since its much more rare than my H63. The H63 will be the family wagon. Took the sleeper bed out and will put in a bench seat to strap in our 3 youngsters so we can all enjoy taking trips in her. Just takes a lot if $ and time, both of which I'm short on. Kids are all in sports and I coach all their teams along with running a non profit organization for my son. We organize a 5k/10k run every year in our hometown to raise $ for research on his eye disease. So in my spare time I get to tinker on the trucks as much as I can.

It's got the hydraulic hand pump jack that extends two hydraulic rams. The rams extend and tilt the cab mount arms forward and up. Same style that my 57' H63 has. Gotta replace the water pump and get the spring hanger replaced so my boy and I can start bombing around in her again. My H63 is tore apart and in the process of restoration. It's taking a lot longer than I'd like but at least I've got one truck to drive around and enjoy.

Here's a few pics of the busted hanger. I also have an H63 that I've put an air ride under and the bolt pattern is the sameon both. Problem is the old hangers are long gone. If a B model hanger will work does anybody have some I can buy?
-
I noticed the casting # is the same as a pic of one on a B model except after the casting # on the B model it had a "B" assuming for B model and my H model had an LH at the end. The hanger is visibly different as far as its shape compared to mine but the bolt pattern looks similar. I was surprised that on a suspension hanger they'd use aluminum. If a B model hanger would work I'd like to grab a couple and replace atleast my fractured one. Can't drive it the way it is. Everything on this H61 is original and one day when I tear it down to restore it I'd like it to be all original but there's no repairing this one hanger. I'll try and post a few pics of it tomorrow if I can.
