  1. check valve purpose is to keep filter full after shut down, with out it oil could back feed
  2. after all the conversation about this unit;; sure hope we are given a follow up .. after the install of transverse rod especially.

  4. glad you had a great time and back safely . my younger sister has a son who lives or lived in Alaska . she's been there many times has nothing but good things to say about it.
  5. now if your set up had/has the seal in the axle cap it self then both inner and outer bearings were/are grease packed. there is a set up with the seal inside having outer bearing oil with inner grease. changed a few in the day to oil on both. then it was stemco seals with the axle spindle wear ring.
  6. in earlier set ups, the outer bearing was oil fed while inner bearing was grease packed. with proper seal (oil capable) being installed in wheel and elimination of the middle (intermediate )seal both bearings became oil fed.

  8. that's what threw this ole man off;; I didn't know there was a changeover later years going from separate axle cap duel end splined axle set up to one piece flanged style (cheaper to manufacture) axle on the 44 range. THANK YOU for providing the info to expand knowledge.
  9. tiny radiator is basically a B model radiator and frame. early R's/DM's having small radiators will have the two side mounted "closed shutters" extensions taking up side gap.
  10. hopefully you have access to the donor truck if parts are needed. the 38's should have an axle with flanged end cap. 44's should have axle with splines on both ends with separate cap which attaches to the wheel , making the 44's tad longer and sticking out of wheel hub. easiest plan of attack have both axles =38 and 44 side by side. axle in to the rear end side gears might/ should be same spline count.
  11. the main reason Mack introduced the transmission with aux stick having low/direct/reverse on aux stick was due to the 5 speed maxi in a dump truck wasn't low enough for start out when loaded. But having a side mount PTO could not do operations such as asphalt spreading. the PTO ran off transmission gearing. to pull a spreader had to be 1st gear.. 1st gear PTO was too slow. 4/5th gear PTO worked but too fast to pull a spreader. too solve this issue the rear mounted PTO was developed which had constant speed. unfortunately, many driver took a liking to the new 7-8-9- speed transmission, which they weren't,
  12. when in doubt' after U-bolts are tighten/torqued ;; a big sledge hammer and a few "taps "to top of U-bolts. Then check torque numbers again , see if a difference. Always never seize threads. if not for later removal = a higher torque valve is a guarantee on lubricated threads,

  14. B C R's were done at dealerships. while at Waterbury Mack '69-'75 . I worked on 2 b's converted to R's. can't say longevity of the program sorry. went back to pictures I posted way back on my profile; one is of ole #1 in the garage hooked to a reads screening plant. thought I might have put picture of the engine/transmission on back of my '77 ford -nope.
  15. based on earlier posts; this is the unit WITHOUT side torque arms ? is that situation same ? seems to be a case of :he said? He said. mack blames spring guy , spring guy blames Mack. all the while it's your check book which keeps opening. have changed more springs then I want to think about; rarely used a multiplier. 1 in air gun or long pipe . challenge here is a triaxle has all the weight on the drives where as a tractor pulling 53 ft trailer weight is distributed. 4 new U-bolts and side traverse rod .
  16. follow up later with the correct results be greatly appreciated. the housings may be the same : axle spline possibly ok . my question based on failing ole man memory is the axle length. out in left field on this BUT 38's have a solid axle while 44's have the floating axle as with the 55's ????

"97 is way to new for me , based on the knowledge BMT members post and old mechanical thoughts; don't you get codes explaining the fault?? what are the gages reading.?? as noted - now that it's hot outside and loaded . temp going hot by gage?? fan kicking on ?? changed the sensor but what is actual engine doing??
  18. any one notice how "secure "fifth were mounted in the day ??? 4 u=bolts or spring leave bolts if needed!!LOL believe the flat stock from rear crossmember to fifth wheel plate was added to keep 5th wheel in position longer. dry freight not bad;;; up and down the narrow back roads of CT from farm to farm hauling milk 7 days a week put some pressure on the 5th wheel u-bolts. many yrs back it had a cab/hood off resto . still have (somewhere) the picture of that engine/ transmission all rebuilt and painted sitting on the back of my '77 F-350 flat bed after I finished the rebuild of both and bringing it to install .

B C R short term stands for (B)model (C)onverted to (R)model. with changing times then as earlier written ; many contractors /truck owners had older B models which cab wise were showing some age yet the lower end:: rails drive line had many miles left. much like farmers of the day , equipment was repaired ;not replaced. Mack ingeniously came up with the conversion idea. also I'm sure it had to do with promoting the R model . the two I became involved in building were B model dumps which mysteriously caught fire in a garage and only to the cab section. alum fuel pedals were a blob of melted alum on the transmission. remember the cabs being unpainted outside but fully groomed inside. memory loss on the cab/hood mounting change over. was a couple of years ago== 1972.1974 ?????
  20. that's a short wheelbase for sure. back in the day of weight laws changing , more for 10 wheel dumps ;shortys like that came in with 3rd axle where battery box is. small size tires just enough to pass the laws.
  21. can't recommend parts; but sure hope the BMT crew gets to see a picture!! RD886 SX . any model with the 8 in it (B-81 / DM 800/ RD800 ) has my interest and vote.

  23. as spoken on here numerous times : back then things were simpler with way more common sense . cab conversions didn't require computers and miles of electrical wiring. that hood is very heavy to tilt, radiator being smaller then opening has the two side extension panels. that front Mack emblem should have an armed guard; LOL don't know if another exists. always wondered if serial # 1002 still around ? many yrs back a truck newspaper had an ad for the first U model U607T 1001 for sale .must be scrap by now.
  24. Thanks for the pictures. I plotted the course on the map this am. 1- it was late in am.2- wasn't totally sure of the show to warrant the 2 plus hr drive. 3- never figured the turn out as the pictures showed. maybe next year. that DM is great looking. certainly don't want to be put on the spot with some one asking :: " which do I like better the DM or B73. !!!! they are both number one (in their own class).
  25. B C R's weren't "invented "yet. that unit was only suppose to be a demonstrator, not for sale truck. the R's were still in the trial stage . while at Mack waterbury. I assisted on two B C R conversions early '70's. with the R's gaining popularity and the days when things were repaired not junked and new bought many B models starting to rust out from age and new England salt. you didn't scrap a good drivetrain/chassis ; just updated. someone at Mack had some smarts to think of the BCR. instead of manufacture/stock B cabs ; make use of this new style cab called an R.
