  1. winch picture two ; drop down chain drive going to shaft on P T O ? pic :three gap under body between hyd res and rear wheels is possible location of tool box.? should add character to truck and use the space. door big enough would be excellent place for just the touch of pin stripe ::maybe ?
  2. HI way SOMEWHERE !! you could have at least got the route number and direction;; now the BMT crew sees what kind of a friend you are !LMAO one thing for sure those "tanks" aren't alum. someone must recognize the highway or mountain range ... thanks for the picture
  3. with out a doubt, round tanks will hold the rubber of what ever used way better. tank in question as earlier stated ;;1- on a "show truck" : 2- it's a rectangular ,in agreement with statement the flats of rec tank flex more leaving gap between strap and tank. most time it fills in with dirt or grit.
  4. absolutely NOTHING wrong with "repurpose " of items. but in the case of a beautiful vintage truck ;;; a cut up rubber flap or inner tube sticking out of the tank straps would be like putting a mustache on mona Lisa . OK bad example; mona lisa would be comical with mustache. you get the idea. have done plenty of inner tube/ flaps as cushion for tank straps . they have to be way wider than straps ;; they always walk out from metal straps.
  5. they do/did make a rubber strap specifically for tank hold downs. benefits are 1= rubber has the side ridges which keep it on the metal strap;2- defiantly looks better . 3= should be able to buy a length /roll and cut as needed?
  6. 2 down 10 to go. don't get complacent ::: one of those might catch you by surprise. wouldn't want any burns happening. no big boom ? gas that stale ?
  7. after trying to enlarge photo, which didn't do much I will agree .looks like 3 it's only two. that first one is held by 4 straps. fuel fill might be under sleeper close to strap 3 making it look like a seam. has the inserts for headlight panels also.
  8. wouldn't go extreme of saying " I would make a lot of stupid decisions ", may be more accurate in to days world of stating " I would make a lot of EXPENSIVE unnecessary decisions.
  9. not that it matters ;BUT the ole brain cells woke up enough to remember the two steel nose DM600' tractor/trailer dumps went to:: INNES Bros construction (Torrington ?) ring a bell to anyone else ?? many unmentioned CT construction truck ;could easy fill another volume of the good days
  10. and a freight train they were. when things went from 15/18/20 speed transmissions to a ( 5 ) FIVE speed later to 6; you knew changes were on the horizon! BUT THOSE 5 and 6 speeds did the job ; even better in some cases. many old timers (not me then) said NO WAY a truck pulls down to 11/1200. don't know about this ASET AMI stuff, one indication glad I gave up my CDL.
  11. smaller on left is an oil ?? did you attempt tracing lines from smaller one (luber 500)? going by statement of the 750 gasket is square ; which I'm sure is correct. got me thinking == there is one large filter housing having a tapered top which the square o-ring has one tapered side that faces up when installed to match cover angle.
  12. I'M REALLY LIKIEN the part about "in the old days a good truck salesman did the calculations!! boy ain't that 110% right. can remember a salesman bringing a customer out to SEE and ROAD TEST a unit. many were built for this terrain. today "one size fits all attitude" and "not spec built "LIKE THEY WERE IN THE OLDER DAYS ". and yes I agree with Geoff. seeing the $$ cost of things here , I would do a heck of a lot of calculating first.
  13. if your old like me; you can recall when a Doctor could "repair "you from head to toes. today's world of complication there are hand doctors/ finger dr's !!= wait a minute aren't those parts connected to each other !! stay on topic now that 'was just an example. maintenance manuals have to follow the trend of complex. all systems : air/fuel and so on are too diversified. one yr it's - - - fuel pump next yr something different. in the day idea was simplify; today manufactures look for ; how can we make it cheaper and charge more. no manual around could accurately cover things.
  14. removing the small plastic side cover inside wheel well helped very little. gave enough room for someone with a 2x4 to help balance the starter while in the cab mech tried to catch the bolts. two people one standing on tire pulling rope attached to started worked. in the cab twisted like escape artist you end up with a back like I have after unknown number of starter replacing. besides a few downfalls the 600 still fine-looking machine. possibly one reason the smarter folk said " screw that mechanic stuff , I'll drive em"
  15. there weren't many steel nose 600's sold back then . Mack dumps were either the long nose 800's or fiber nose 600's. that's one reason I can't remember where those two steel 600's were delivered to. I made many trips to O&G torrington for new trucks ;; all were fiber 600's.
  16. from what i see and hear newer manuals have changed considerably . why make one good manual explaining all when they can make a number of volumes which adds to making more money. I DO understand newer stuff is more complicated in todays world and especially when it comes to the electronics which that alone could constitute a number of books. old man thinking == simple solution ;; do away with the computers and truck electronics .
  17. slightly off topic (no not me ) . if I may ask how did you come up with the Mack31 log in ?? reason for asking is that is what my license plate (ct ) was , I worked for Mack trucks and Baskin Robbins (31). had the MACK31 plate for years. for back to topic; depending on set up/ shop equipt most important= $$$. change over that extreme on occasion it more practical to find a running chassis having matching engine (diesel) with proper ratio transmission/ rear end.do a change over.
  18. If you haven't got your answer yet" the steel washer goes under solenoid; o-ring I always soaked in oil then set in to rocker and slowly turned solenoid into rocker. electrical source closed solenoid which allowed oil into exhaust ports eliminating valve lash gap holding exhaust valve open. same concept as jake just different housing set up.
  19. if picture shows 3 tanks passenger side ;; would it also have 3 driver side ?? that's a lot of fuel. deceptive picture ; could almost be a R-700?? don't see a seam on hood fenders indicating an older R . more and more want to travel to the Australian side to see a positive world.
  20. and do YOU think your alone !!! i gain weight just looking at the masterpiece cooking on here LMAO. have put off for 2 years going to heart doctors cause of the weight gain from post on BMT. well that's not the only reason for not going or the weight gain== have to blame someone. LOL
  21. let's see if the "ole timers" know this answer (ok maybe you youngster know. back in had to be mid 70's a construction fleet in CT bought two (2) DM 600 steel nose tractors and trailer dumps from Waterbury Mack . I wasn;t allowed to drive them to delivery- I had to use company car and pick up the drivers. the tractors were red or orange (not F&F).; thought they went towards Torrington area . this question has boggled my mind since looking at this steel nose DM and also the post of ct construction .
  22. the DM 800 for construction is a majestic beauty ; BUT the DM600 steel nose tractor is a league of it's own ::: NOT talking about having to work on the half cab Pain-in- a-- ! the appearance short steel hood real nice. thanks for pictures also.
  23. your talking about Macks and you say "when I find a GOOD one!!! what the heck ??? are you implying You found a bad one???LOL that white paint scheme just sets the fleet off. real nice. waiting to see back half of DM600 tractor. don't tease with just frontal view.
  24. if the greedy lawsuit attorneys didn't drag out the court cases so they can collect their $500.oo plus an hr fee; the innocent wouldn't have to wait years to be compensated for lost loved ones. which in most/all cases there is no $$ amount to bring back those lost. no politics allowed back to Mack trucks
  25. it wouldn't take as long to "settle" if the pockets of the unjustified weren't being filled first. billions sent to Ukraine AFTER the news stated the corrupt Ukraine officials pocketed 40 MILION $$ they were sent which were going for arms and military aid.
