74 Mack Rmodel Project
mechohaulic replied to JBushneck's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
steel nose always a better== B-70's/80's or DM 600/DM800. 800's duel purpose ;;;lunch time you had large table for lunch when using fenders. LOL . fiberglass the food slid off, not to mention can't sit on a fiberglass hood. spent number of lunch breaks sitting on DM800 fenders ( while polishing the HUGE hood). -
where does the RB come from?? will admit I'm NOT up to modern day model identification . the RB is a ???? . R model with B model parts ??? another sign of the technical standards of today. days back a model number told a person what the unit was. can understand a ==example purpose ONLY R611T = R model 673T with RR trans single axle.. DM 685 S - Dump Mixer chassis / maxi eng/ light suspension ;; and so on ... !! this RB =ole man at a loss. don't even try to examine the newer model numbers.

brain cells at a loss. steel co :: NOT Chaplin/banks ?? Edgecomb steel (Milford) didn't have grapple cranes. this goes back to Connecticut truck book;; so many not listed that have gone by the way side. -
YOU/(a person ) can do what ever individual capabilities are ! then it goes to shop/ set up/ access is .. can I is NOT the question ;;more over will I ?? that question has TOO many variables = 1= why do it/2- what for-- road use/ show machine /3- resources available ==list goes on. more specifics for reason why helps the BMT crew give response. first saw this RB model in another text , thought it to be mis print;;has shown up a lot . not sure of what constitutes an RB

I didn't notice that point till you wrote;; it IS a centered cab . NOT a DM steel nose. Still it's a Mack worth maintaining (they all are ), -
NOT a long winded procedure but free knowledgeable advice from reputative source. have ALWAYS had respect for the Australian culture and it's people.so close on the globe yet so different in operations.

that's one fine looking DM scale model. at present I have 4 models in build shop with another showing up yesterday (1/25th cattle trailer ).which I bought for grandson. found some older models in boxes at the house . model bought in '78 for $11.25 is $82.00 at hobby shop today. located some 11:24.5 tires in Canada (1/25th scale ) for $8.00 a piece = need 10 for one build.

= what was used to tow lowbed before Superliner showed up?? if there was another tractor. how do "two" units compare for specs- wheel base/ 5th wheel settings . first trip with super/lowbed- does that mean new to truck or new truck trailer combo ??

Engine rebuild on a '53 B-61T: END673
mechohaulic replied to Keith S's topic in Engine and Transmission
WELL you "high tech " mechanics have all the good toys to work with !LMAO🤣. bet you never did an engine rebuilt outside in a gravel bank = yep I did but can't remember why = some things are better forgotten. now a Polack having an engine on stand welding liners might go and cover the crank journals !! why ="cause that's what the book said to do. bet you didn't know the close relations between Polacks and red necks =when engine building ;;; had to stay on topic.!!!! LOL -
would think it has a slider 5th wheel, easy check would be move wheel one way or other. post was put up on Thursday with unit going to mechanic Friday (yesterday); hope this has a follow up. noticed on many post placed on BMT forums NOT MANY update on results .

Engine rebuild on a '53 B-61T: END673
mechohaulic replied to Keith S's topic in Engine and Transmission
another quick option to crank cover would be one or two welding gloves placed in bottom of cyl. high tech would be piece of asbestos cover; for most welding gloves work. one wraps the journal another for added coverage lays on top of first in liner. easier to move cyl to cyl. also stick rod makes more sparks (does better on heat distribution?) wire feed not as messy challenge to get in cyl at times. lest we NOT forget how /where the ground is attached ! -
bad or broken engine mount should show a gear shift moving erratic . cruising 45-50 would be a "no strain "condition for drive train. engine mount/ rubbers wouldn't be under load to twist UNLESS the cruising condition involved torque. change the front tires with another set if possible or have those balanced to confirm they aren't the problem. had a brand new truck with vibration at 40-50 mph = turns out the balance weight fell of the rim == think I'm showing my age again. tires were bias not tubeless . also how is the word "bounce " used in reference to problem . truck bouncing up/ down or is it shimming at 45-50/ wandering ?? I agree with all above comments terms of 5th wheel set wrong etc. was the low bed empty or hauling a D-10!! (i know it can't just point of issue).

mechohaulic replied to Krost Way's topic in Engine and Transmission
title shows B-67 ST indicating a concave cab twin screw. freight hauler operation ?? general over view of rear section is a positive ?? ; brakes / suspension decent indicating good Maintenace ?? as always on BMT pictures help a great deal -
59 Mack B 67 ST with END 673 Oil Change/ cleaning
mechohaulic replied to Krost Way's topic in Engine and Transmission
It's a machine there is NO way to ensure it keeps running. hoping you have received an honest history of the unit terms of servicing/ repairs made etc is a start. go with the basic same as a used car. change the fluids possibly take sample to sent out for analysis , send the masterminds on BMT a few more stats of the vehicle such as mileage/ hours ; do you know it's principle use before you purchased ??? job giving it more hrs then mileage ( road truck/ local delivery operation?? why "clean engine internally an issue?? blow by out breather when running ??? have a spare set of valve cover gaskets then remove valve covers check sludge under covers. -
Engine rebuild on a '53 B-61T: END673
mechohaulic replied to Keith S's topic in Engine and Transmission
not hearing it spin(by hand) my main concern would be the lower shaft bearings. the gears are Mack tough=a little/lot of cleaning they will run a long time providing no pieces missing. the bearings and races being in water may be a different story. transmission on the ground and open would be the opportune time for covers off ; bearings/ races inspected or replaced. wining going down the road not good. you want wining then take my wife with you. -
Engine rebuild on a '53 B-61T: END673
mechohaulic replied to Keith S's topic in Engine and Transmission
the "beads of weld" were a common practice back then; personally I've never done it . possibly due to Mack having a super HD sleeve puller . off site I have resorted to a 20 ton bottle jack under the engine with custom made plate having exact dia of sleeve and pressed liner up and out from bottom. the "skill was the honing of block to fit new sleeves. don't tell anyone but yes I did over hone and need a P2 sleeve on (rare)occasion. then the challenge of new installs; clean cloth with clean 2x4, if the fit was correct =standing on the 2x4 body weight sent the liner in ;;;NOT forgetting the shims under the liner for proper ridge height. new liners were called dry = still sprayed them on install for lube. after all was said and done the sound of the new rebuilt on start up was = yep the old dog got a bone(r). proud to be part of all the sick puppies here .LMAO close call on hearing the engine start or having "helper take down Christmas tree -" other post. hear that engine = I built it. -
all it needs now is a set of pneumatic tires for those rough terrain projects. 😄 tubeless and fill with some green stuff.
