  1. old school rules must be obsolete by todays standards ;;; but cleaning studs and block holes a major importance. also threads were lubricated on install making sure NOT to over lube studs to where oil went into holes. studs threaded in till tight THEN backed off 1/4-1/2 ? turn. one reason a retorque was always needed. oil in bottom of stud hole with studs tighten reportedly build excessive pressure when engine up to temp. backing off allowed for expansion.
  2. never seize on the attaching screws for sure , I would also recommend caulk or silicone on the nutsert going in to roof panel. easier to seal hole on install of nutsert then to have a drip/leak . thin roof panel if being drilled out for nutsert may have a tendency to distort
  3. back to original post; I'd say roof lights are held in with nutserts looking at pictures. question would be whether or not nutserts spin in cab sheet metal.

  5. don't remember specifics; yet remember lifter faces separating ; cam removal (with finger tip scalping). rare occasion of cam bushing replacement. clothes pins holding new lifters in place while cam reinstalled. ceramics never a part of process. but also never dreamed of oil velocity being 0-5. times change.

  9. this ceramic topic has me wondering also. have been reading these post of ceramic lifters. of the many hopes I have before my final breath is to participate in an engine rebuild by new day standards to witness new technology
  10. are they held in with nutserts ? then yes. don't think by '88 they were mounted with machine screws/ bolts and nuts. problem would be if nutserts spin in sheet metal cab.
  11. they may hold a lot of pencils today ;;but those one piecers pushed a lot of horsepower back in the day. pencil holders are in government offices today. LOL just sayin. now jack daniels wait your turn to speak.
  12. went back 21 pages ; sure I missed it but no where did you list year of the DM! reason being ; I questioned the side extensions on the radiator . in pictures you posted; must be an early ' 60's DM??
  13. old school rule of thumb was :: as tight as you can get them. depended on what you have for tools ' air or manual also. such a technical world today. the follow up retorque was the important part for most. did the replacement of cutting edges on a D-8 dozer in hot blazing sun one Sunday afternoon ; was the concern over torque =He-- no ; tighten them there bolts.
  14. most important part of engine rebuild whether combo of old studs VS new is the retorque after ??hrs. never seemed so complicated back then;;quess goes back to common idea of things SO DAARN SIMPLER THEN .
  15. having installed 50-60 5th wheels on new units while at Mack trucks; the Teflon plates are ONLY FOR UNITS COMPLETELY CLEANED OF GREASE. units NOT being dropped regular for what ever reason( tank loaded / heavy unit etc) the teflon plates are excellent . while at Mack truck a fleet of prestressed concrete haulers had osculating fifth wheels installed . 4 in spacers under the wheel. the wheels had two pop up locks which locked the carrier bar to the wheel giving better weigh Distibution on the load during cornering. I find the ball race turn table similar yet interesting.

  18. can see in picture #2 why that muffler wasn't as noticeable having dump body "hiding "it. defiantly would look awkward as a stand alone . even a headboard on flatbed wouldn't cover it. does the DM still have brackets for oval short muffler ?
  19. those pieces are what a mechanic considers a fantastic "cross word puzzle". so many pieces and a challenge swapping them around till results are :: THAT'S HOW THEY GO !!!

  22. apologize for delayed response. I've enlarged/studied , can say possible === . can't confirm actual usage. checking bell housing run out was a tool having a dial indicator fixed to it connected to crank shaft and spun. I can see how the individual parts are related to each other terms of using. spare dowel pins top right . flat bar with center hole back in the day may have been used for top of sleeve puller. 3 bottom round "pipes" used for different diameter holes in crankshaft not having a bearing ??? very faint part numbers on one . don't recall a grove cutter having this stuff. keep the tools soaking in some oil;;WHEN I drive down to see my sister and some BMT members ,remind me to check that stuff out up close.

  24. not counting the viet Nam conflict (it didn't meet the requirements -yes they have them ) to be called officially a war. the generation of my parents had for the most part a positive future for their children. sadly I can't say the same for my daughters children.
