  1. I'm reading these parts were from an e-bay seller !!!!! darn ;possibly that is a bases for the situation at hand. e-bay like many other outlets on line were always a good source for items. I've bought for yrs there. last transaction I e-bay won went negative. not saying this seller of pin kit did wrong ;just adds to confusion. seems many sellers have a number of accounts and bid against themselves to build profiles and scam others. sad
  2. this topic is one of those which bring back the "remember when" days. had a customer having a single axle HD ford dump, transmission was screwed up and needed bearings. trans out/ apart; bearing kit laid out. there was an upgrade in the kit. 1 3/4 long needle bearing replaced a bushing. point is bearing fit the shaft; bearing fit in the gear . just not when attempting to put shaft through the gear when roller bearing in the gear . truck HAD to be running 7 am. stayed up all night with a cyl hone "boring out " the gear. everything went together after hrs of honing . truck running by 6:30am as owner came to go to work. I had enough time to stop for coffee and do full day at regular job. object of story this sounds like wrong boxed parts/ someone swapped parts or another upgrade no one mention when buying parts.
  3. based on memory (oh no not that ) the straight pins had the flat spot(notch) mid-way and a wedge pin threaded on one end went thorough axle to lock kinkpin in place.
  4. grease might not exit bushings with out seals but you can bet your duppa the dirt/ grit will find it's way in
  5. was the box opened and retaped when you got it. from pictures i'd say some one swapped parts. sad world today. go in to tractor supply for nut/bolt hardware ;plastic bags of quality bolts ripped open and left ; good hardware thrown in to by the pound bag. as stated not under standing straight pin
  6. after bushing are installed, take a grease gun and pump a couple of shots of grease through the zerks. which should be done every time ; you can see grease come through bushing it's good to go . clean paint stick or equivalent works to put a coating of grease on new bushings before reinstall of pin.
  7. possibly like so many products todays world there are cut backs on the seal kits also.to save money on production , manufactures are saying use silicone sealant ?? nothing surprises me any more with the production cuts on quality for C E O bonus checks. old seals are usable I'd reinstall; better then nothing. a spindle grease seal not total technical as an engine oil seal. or it's a case of ="oh, you want seals tooo, those are extra"!! for bushing install I don't know of a shoulder it's a matter of "eye-ball" the bushing to the spindle making sure finished install the holes will line up. the trials and errors of being a mechanic. at least with this project if the holes don't line up :(but we know they will) last resort remove zerk fitting and carefully drill through threads with a smaller drill into bushing then remove internal burrs. you have the technology so you won't be doing that set. and we are all going to be waiting for spindle picture showing the correctly installed bushing .😄
  8. to remove the old bushings (thick wall) I've taken a socket tad smaller then spindle hole. put socket against the bushing backward meaning the socket is basically upside down against bushing 1/2 in drive extension through spindle goes into socket and tap / hammer out old bushing. it's the Polish// frugal way of having a bushing remover= installer. looking at the bushing pictures even having 2 grease holes ;are the holes off center top to bottom ?? install upside down will the holes be off from lining up to zerk hole ? possibly just the photo makes off set appearance. been a while for me doing bushings.
  9. not sure if newer bushings have an outer groove for grease or just the one hole. only one hole ,make sure bushing install has the bushing grease hole lining up with the spindle grease fitting location when finally in place. improper line up grease won't reach intended area
  10. one method of bronze bushing installation without hammer pounding which could lead to bushing damage is to use a large C-clamp and two steel pieces. clean/lube all parts , use C=clamp as a "press" .provides steady equal pressure to bushing and keep bushing lubed as clamp presses it in . have done the large socket method and hammer also.
  11. did you find a cause for gauge burn out =loose terminals got hot/ bad gauge etc ? fortunately damage was minimal .
  12. today's world guess I could have gone with double up a strip of the 80 grit emery then wrap the cap to protect it from the wrench.

  14. once again it's matter of pictures if possible have not been posted previously. should be as stated a thread on cap. if they are that tight/rusted on wrap the cap in heavy cloth ( my day they were wrapped with burlap ) I know 90percent saying "what is burlap !!LOL then use a strap wrench or HD chain style strap wrench

  16. ALL funerals are sad events ;when attending one such as You posted, and see the group of trucks attending it shows a gathering of the greatest friends respecting the loss of one of their own. Sorry for Your loss. I attended Mass this morning which was given on the passing anniversary day of a good ole farmer from town I am honored to have known. has been said " longer you live the more funerals you attend. any age someone passes is bad ; when the ole timers pass , knowledge lost is unreplaceable.
  17. seems conversion to air compressor /PS combo would be way to go. parts availability should be better, even to find generator/PS combo would be nice for originality ; replace /repair down the road will get worse before better. air compressor set up might prove to be a better system for operation also. eventually changing over to an alternator will put you back to square one with the generator set up tooo.
  18. would be interesting to check them out at truck show type event. take it the reason for high cab is all most are stand up to bunk ? or bunk over drivers . watch out low bridges in U S A .

BUT LOOK AT WHAT WILL REPLACE HIM !!!!! worse or better ==you decide. told my wife in '63 it was easy to take out someone like a president with a couple of scope shots; not as easy today. those "in charge" won't think twice about taking out an entire plane to get one on board. Russia seem to thing it would work.
  20. now that explains a lot to match the pictures. thank you for reply. reason for asking due to one side shot of tractor looked to be the fontaine fifth wheel slider rail . thought the distance from battery box to front set of tandems looked real close. went back to page one (long time back) no clear shot of side.
  21. the 73 as a tractor originally ,was it a slider or fixed 5th wheel?
  22. the air compressors with PS mounted pumps were and to a point still are more common then generator mounted PS set ups. not doing any good today, back in the day I did see the generator set ups which even then weren't common. due largely to fact PS wasn't a standard item . men were men and drove Macks LOL

Matts B-73 project has become an inspiration to many. keep telling yourself == "I can do it I can do it ! the B-73 WILL ALWAYS be the first place trophy truck= your goal is to try for second place. with all the sanding, don't think I have to ask = are you wearing a good quality mask?? fiberglass dust is way bad news.
