  1. are you referring to the 315 hp which had the small turbine fan mounted top of engine between intake and engine mounted intercooler ?? believe that was macks idea before the radiator mounted air intercooler came to be, if we are on the same page ,
  2. while at Mack I set up two new mack fire trucks for delivery. both I hear are still at the departments for parade use only. don't think a 50 yr old fire truck would still be in service. one an R model - town of winchester center ;other a MB- town of roxbury ct; (first and only MB with a jake brake back then.).
  3. same company (owners) that have the first sold R model ::R607T 1001 , replaced it in '69 with a R611T . 611 long gone ; the R607 T ole #1 still in CT original owners. the R611T was set up with ENDT 673 and jake brake. ran 7 days a week hauling milk tank .
  4. if I see the fine print correctly it's showing the 864 V8 . there's a positive. duplex ?? triplex or quad ==A OK. how could it have gotten any better . nice looking= fun power ==NO computer.
  5. just realized ;; seeing as how I've been good lately : don't want to be going off topic. still discussing front end tools LOL
  6. that's why I earlier stated = customers didn't always know how accurate the kink pin job came out. grease fixed a lot some times. tapered pins bushings that were installed then reamed from bottom =up. no fancy electronic gadgets ;; hold the reamer forcing upward and turn evenly. didn't take much to over cut a bushing
  7. kink pin reamers I used / had were specific to one pin only. came in long narrow WOODEN box wrapped in an oily cloth. square head for adjustable wrench usually. back in the day pins were like a cup of coffee== small/ medium/large. just sayin.
  8. guess what threw me for a loop was the part saying "kits came with a nylon lined bushing" . I took it to mean plastic bushing :(been a long day of cutting wet grass).keiser kits are possibly what i was brain cell thinking then. I could almost have an upset stomach thinking back to all the tools and stuff I had before the auction. reamers/ pullers/ (2) 1in impacts :: too long a list. and the tech stuff= micrometers , gauges and more.
  9. now be truthful here did you really use YOUR water pick or wifes. LOL
  10. seems every where you look plastic is replacing metal/ brass/ bronze. just another sign of how times are changing. was there a similar spiral type bushing made from metal (bronze/ brass ?? can picture a spiral brass bushing ; can't recall for what. maybe 3/16th wide wraps by 1 1/2- 2 in long ?
  11. when in doubt, a second set of eyes and a good light helps. one to move the wheel(s) while another is behind tires to see what is moving; wheel bearings/kink pins.
  12. didn't see anyone state the new pin bushings had to be reamed to fit the pins.( back then) ;;; am I really that old!! believe the HD B81 /DM axles had the roller bearing under the kink pin that sat in adjustable cap held in by large cotter pin. oh the customers that didn't know the reaming process wasn't that accurate if reamed tooo much. the grease was heavier then also took up some error in reaming.
  13. 2 am I woke = His name is (was) ED. like many things back then ;; hard working crew .especially spring work .
  14. pictures are interesting to everyone. Thanks for the post. the R401's are showing the scania diesel. they did have some with the V-8 gas engine also. was (still is) a scrap Iron company in CT (waterbury ) that ran alot of the R-400's with both gas and diesel. today they run other brands.
  15. bet you don't have the regrets I have when I look at the pictures you posted thinking of the large box thrown away at Mack when new owners took over. A LARGE box having brand new brochures for all the Macks of the day. I kept out ones I liked , made a booklet of most = gave to someone I knew would enjoy it.
  16. then it's the same pit that been there for 100 yrs ;LOL== NO I wasn't there when it was built but close to it. looks much cleaner. they were the best back then. took alot of work for Mack and others there . use to be a shop foreman back then == wore "coke bottle glasses" for you youngsters coke bottle glasses were thick lenses. can't remember his name ; hard working guy. was a challenge to back anything long in there off the street. imagine the B73 wasn't easy
  17. 20 new cross members on 24 ft deck == crossmembers ft apart +- ? head board staying as is with wire mesh top ?
  18. that spring shop the B73 is in ;; that's not perrualts in waterbury is it ?? didn't know if they still existed and I NEVER saw the shop that clean 45 + yrs ago
  19. since the frame vin matches the door. i'd say it was a misinterpretation of model/ serial number reading. a DM607 S could have been taken as a single axle by memory. actually a single axle is a T , DM world a S would come under light weight DM vs a DM----SX ; heavy weight .
  20. picture of right front shows red painted bumper/ cab . under cab definite line taped off separating red from black frame. possibly why the turquoise paint on rears. hopefully a vin on frame rail will be different then door and an easier chance to acquire parts more accurately.
  21. went back to the start of this topic couple pages in the picture show view from taillight section ( keeping the temptation out ; not saying picture of rear end )😀. no way a single axle from get go.
  22. is there a possibility the cab was changed without changing door vin tag?? i could understand a twin being converted to a single. unless it was a long wheelbase single originally then tandems installed . does the door tag match the frame serial number ? seems a little investigating is called for. different paint color ?? do the frame rails look "tampered with"? cab change seems my vote ,
  23. now lets be careful with this phrase "these RELICS ";;; those B's are my age bracket !!LOL .. try welcome to the challenges = maintaining history can drive you crazy,,,, LMAO
  24. and if you act NOW for only $19.95 plus 15K for shipping you could be the proud owner of one :::LOL . realistically speaking I thought it was different looking. hopefully someone may be interested in it.
