time goes way faster then you think. I've always had a standing "agreement" with my customers when it came time for payment. not to be takin as morbid , just my way. I had 6 customers in agreement that since I carried them (their fleet) for so many yrs they would carry me on my last trip. problem I'm having is they are all passing on before me. the obit I posted couple weeks ago was a truck driver who was one of the six!! sure hope last ride isn't in a car either. LOL

one reason it was difficult to give up my CDL after 50 yrs yet in the real world it isn't worth keeping. in CT i don't even see respect among the big rigs any more.

to be the "old timers " is the easy part ; we will all get there some day. the challenge and hope is that a next generation has the interest and desire to learn and carry on that to which is being past on by this generation of "old timers". after attending the deerfield truck show seeing the iron was good; what has impressed me and became the high light of the show was meeting Hippy( 70 mack MB) and his Son. staying in topic ; reason I mention the show was learning how his son is following in the footsteps of Dad as the next generation of diesel mechanics. I wouldn't give a thought to going to school for the modern electronics in todays trucking industry: I'm the ole timer now.

will try ; just seems it takes longer to keep going. attempted to walk an auction yesterday of HD equipment. did an early start with a walk through and had to leave before it started. 1- knees couldn't take the pain;2- alot of good"stuff" , had to deal in reality :: do I really need more stuff;3- is it worth spending the day to wait for a JD tractor that will be over priced any how !.

THANK YOU . made it to 72.

waterbury Mack had "ole man Dixon" in the machine shop. all he did was transmissions and rear ends. i was told he knew every gear by location from any transmission or rear. put Him to the test . found a gear identified the number / trans model and location. showed it to him . he told me exactly where it went and trans model it came from. I spent many a lunch hrs listening to Him.

change a few names a story I could have written. the ole timers back then had sooo much knowledge , one inspiration for me was the shop foreman at Mack. if i could have tapped into a small part of his knowledge . unknown secret he had was ; he couldn't read or write well.it was hands on that taught him. started as a gas pump boy before it became a Mack dealer. I had/have the highest respect for him. as with many ; he's no longer with us. always figured You must have had a great foundation for the knowledge You express. willingness to learn is important , a concrete influence plays a major role in the desire to learn. SORRY for Your loss.

had to take a moment to ponder the welded pipe on front bumper;;; then realized/remembered it was a protective shield for driveshaft that ran plow pump. just for sake of conversation and based on unfortunate experience ;;I would highly recommend a small block of wood under the extension where breaker bar goes through pipe or under second extension to keep socket square on crank bolt. best is a second set of hands assisting, when the bar slips while you are pushing down you are apt to go for a heck of a tumble ;; just sayin

Went to Georgia, fuelled at Gulf station, saw a Mack truck
mechohaulic replied to Vladislav's topic in Odds and Ends
ditto on the pictures and story. looks like the R doesn't have AC . can't believe the R has built in extended cab vs add on sleeper. caught my attention due to I have a DM-800 in progress (1/25th scale) that has been given a built in extended cab. in between lawns etc cab got primer today. -
someone pushed the temp probe tooo far into the core?? that's going under assumption the "new "iron still has that set up.
-
what did you use for batteries on start attempt ??? one 12 v/s 2-12v or other set up. with a s/p switch one 12 might not be enough unless using a over size 12 from a dozer or equipt type. trace the system .didn't see battery box/boxes .possibly two boxes on passenger side held 4 = 6 volt batteries at one time and changed threw out time.

only set back to trip to deerfield was I 84 closed westbound going to show. what closed the highway would be something from a comic book ;but it wasn't funny. a car went airborne through the roadside sound barriers high up with back half sticking out , with the amount of troopers on sine and cameras. someone didn't make it. I couldn't go back to driving in to days environment. everyone is preoccupied

Dang; that's an impressive "profile" ::B-815 to two DM800's to R-688!! I spent too much time wrenching vs driving. had a B-81 dump at the farm last yr , hoping to get running. go to work one day truck gone !! WTF. owner "oh I sold it . least he could have done was wait for day I was there so I could say "good bye " . did get quite a few hrs behind a DM-800 at part-time job. tri-axle no floatation front tires, pulling out asphalt plant scaled 84K it was a saturday boss said get all you can plants will be closing. the fun days , had a huge coal body came from down south . -
craigslist Macks
mechohaulic replied to mechohaulic's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
started on craigslist CT under mack trucks; bounced around to NY // long island etc. albany NY showed the "53 LJSWS .I'm not good at this cut/paste stuff. if it wasn't for spell check I'd be in a heck of a situation.LOL -
another way to build a set of install tools ; look in the scrap barrel for any bad bearings, cut the outer cage =throw out the rollers and keep inner bear piece; . extreme caution with hitting the harden bearing parts. installing a wear ring doesn't take a 20lb sledge; little RTV and even round the spindle tapping. stemco did make a spin within it self seal which required no install tools even tapping . I always lube the two spinning pieces before install whether C/r or stemco.
-
was always a stemco believer ; had at one time quite an assortment of the install tools :: in the dinosaur days when each seal had it's own drive tool ; before the blue tube and changeable heads. the grit guard seals were a big improvement for keeping crap out. technology came out with the spin within itself seals (C/R). bet not too many remember the stemco seals when the wrap was actually leather ?? based on picture; i go with a improper install with a hammer. in hardship cases , I have used the inner bearing for ring install, carefully tapping inner race with flat punch, huge metal washer found in the HD Mack rear wheels also worked for a tapping spacer. close tolerance on spindle / thick enough to tap on.

1969 Mack R611T official thread
mechohaulic replied to Robo987's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
some where along the way the 3 spin on set up with large oil pan was 51 qts ??? possibly that 51 was total capacity including filters. unofficially there was a problem with the large pans developing cracks , something with the manufacturing /casting process. brazing didn't work for repairs. -
