  1. agree 100% ; alot of work tooo many differences. depending on your maintenance set up == time down ;; most important $$$$. look into making a RD unit. R with double frame must have been an RD from start???? is the DM that bad to use as donor ? rails are a challenge to change , .RD might have rails similar to DM , R models will be different
  2. finally a positive sun shine for this weekend in new England ; hopefully the Deerfield show will still take place.
  3. Autocars possible cummins power . another one famous for side panel removal were the IH's having gas power (545 ??). hot summer day leaving side panels on was almost a guarantee for vapor lock. on track now let's stay on track !!!😂
  4. correct on extra pin setting. nice looking machine. 4 in 1 an invaluable asset to that or any machine.
  5. interesting set up. don't see where it had a 5th wheel or dump.
  6. not only looked cool but technically it helped engine run cooler. and driver didn't mind a cooler cab inside . keep in mind this was the day of mechanical common sense not computer modules shutting down a unit due to temp fluctuation ;; LOL
  7. a real mack (B-model) could run in the pouring rain WITHOUT the hood ; only inconvenience was the fan blasting the rain towards the window. LOL been there done that. challenging for me to read all the electrical problems of todays iron;; but to have water create an issue. times are different.
  8. have seen a number of times the complaint of rears over full .why won't top stay full!. not suppose to as stated . once had a customer trying to keep power divider housing full!! " it keeps going down" . after a rebuild, the initial three point fill =power divider / top carrier/ rear housing: level needs only to be check in rear housing.
  9. make a few phone calls to people such as Matt phahl or other CT people before the phone call to scrap yard. I only rent here in watertown with possibility of moving or I would gladly store stuff for you.
  10. 1=THANK YOU for YOUR SERVICE. 2= the list of things to "throw away " is shorter than what to keep. most times that's not practical, yet there will be days of + darn I shouldn't have thrown that away.
  11. between the pencil and pto shaft . the small shaft pushed in is the aux shaft I was referring to. center is 1/2-5/8th thread. when rear cover is in place, aux shaft in present position. when installing a rear pto that shaft has to be turned 180 degrees : actually sits inside the pto housing. I would assume that pto is being mounted on top right? THANK YOU ;Macks for photo.
  12. no idea how much on a positive I feel now. most of night staring at ceiling trying to remember (yes i did). duel reasons =1- feared I misinformed someone;;2- constantly concerned of mind loss. cover closest is one I remember. by chance is there a picture of back side of transmission showing the aux idler shaft which had to be turned 180 for a pto to be installed ?
  13. I can understand now why you made the comments of the countershaft dropping. makes much sense . which is reason i said DON'T DROP OUT of conversation. I actually confused the topic not realizing a change over in countershaft bearing set up. I didn't remember having to take side cover off. can see why now it would be done.
  14. spent quite a bit of time checking U-tube for a demo of installing rear PTO; none to be found. tried to verify my failing memory of days gone by. going with idea changes have been made to design of transmission.
  15. you don't think your alone in that area do you!!! imagine a calendar of us old folk . now that would be hilarious.
  16. now be careful when you call a'91 OLD AND GRUMPY!! . wish I was in the '91 bracket=NO not age ; all though getting closer. the '91 bracket is called mid life crisis Mack. my class (B models) are old and grumpy. getting back on topic= you came to right place for info. i've learned much here.
  17. think I know where confusion came to be. memory serves correctly; at 2am today staring at ceiling ;;the EARLY 6 speeds had roller bearing for three counter shafts , not bearing/ race combo .when removing lower rear cover for PTO installation there wasn't a bearing race in cover. just a "flat" aluminum cover. hardest part to pto install was turning small idler shaft. never had a situation with dropping countershaft and misaligning timing. spent many hrs in machine shop at Mack and watched the man I considered to be the Master builder. He always prefaced the importance of the timing. a rear 6 speed pto install was done in short amount of time then. the pto went up against bearing /held it in place.
  18. NO that circled item is OIL COOLER. you do NOT have the canister filter.. the three white spin-ons will be your oil filters. great job on the round one clean up.with the eviction of raccoons ; strong suggestion would be to spray fuel/ brake pedals making it easier for future operation. check roller under brake pedal and plunger . raccoon pee can rust out a lot of parts that should move
  19. jack daniels has some input here sorry(your not alone mowerman) ;; long day of air bag changing. correct title may be call an auxiliary side shaft . not counter shaft.
  20. buzzers were loud and annoying true ; also remember the '70's is when head sets started to show up . to eliminate truck noise yuppies wore head sets. wig-wags let them know low air .
  21. 1= a 12 speed may be a different "animal" in terms of PTO internal drive options. would have to be or else the dump pto speeds depend om main in gear. 2=i more then likely confused the issue with improper explanation of early style pto change over
  22. may have confused things stating "necessary to turn COUNTER SHAFT back 180 position"". not one of three main countershafts. sorry all. possibly better title would be rea auxiliary shaft? not sure of proper name description.
  23. lost when trans numbers used ::107/// TRD72 etc.
  24. DON'T BACK OUT; your info more correct based on newer units. my failing memory goes back to when things like rear PTO's were BRAND NEW items. I did a few ;remember the warnings of pulling/turning small shaft near lower cover. NOT ONE OF THE THREE COUNTERSHAFTS shaft stuck out 3/8th in with slot cut in it. rear cover held shaft in some what. tapered press fit in trans housing. rear pto housing wouldn't fit flat without turning shaft. might have been used for oil return to trans after pto installed
