seems every where you look plastic is replacing metal/ brass/ bronze. just another sign of how times are changing. was there a similar spiral type bushing made from metal (bronze/ brass ?? can picture a spiral brass bushing ; can't recall for what. maybe 3/16th wide wraps by 1 1/2- 2 in long ? -

when in doubt, a second set of eyes and a good light helps. one to move the wheel(s) while another is behind tires to see what is moving; wheel bearings/kink pins. -

didn't see anyone state the new pin bushings had to be reamed to fit the pins.( back then) ;;; am I really that old!! believe the HD B81 /DM axles had the roller bearing under the kink pin that sat in adjustable cap held in by large cotter pin. oh the customers that didn't know the reaming process wasn't that accurate if reamed tooo much. the grease was heavier then also took up some error in reaming. -

bet you don't have the regrets I have when I look at the pictures you posted thinking of the large box thrown away at Mack when new owners took over. A LARGE box having brand new brochures for all the Macks of the day. I kept out ones I liked , made a booklet of most = gave to someone I knew would enjoy it.

Finally some DM progress

since the frame vin matches the door. i'd say it was a misinterpretation of model/ serial number reading. a DM607 S could have been taken as a single axle by memory. actually a single axle is a T , DM world a S would come under light weight DM vs a DM----SX ; heavy weight . -

picture of right front shows red painted bumper/ cab . under cab definite line taped off separating red from black frame. possibly why the turquoise paint on rears. hopefully a vin on frame rail will be different then door and an easier chance to acquire parts more accurately. -

went back to the start of this topic couple pages in the picture show view from taillight section ( keeping the temptation out ; not saying picture of rear end )😀. no way a single axle from get go. -

is there a possibility the cab was changed without changing door vin tag?? i could understand a twin being converted to a single. unless it was a long wheelbase single originally then tandems installed . does the door tag match the frame serial number ? seems a little investigating is called for. different paint color ?? do the frame rails look "tampered with"? cab change seems my vote , -
now lets be careful with this phrase "these RELICS ";;; those B's are my age bracket !!LOL .. try welcome to the challenges = maintaining history can drive you crazy,,,, LMAO

I'd say you found what I was attempting to describe, couldn't say if the one in NY has a rear windshield set up as in picture. can't see entire truck way it is parked backed in . nose on NY firetruck may look longer due to chrome nose not that shinny . faded red paint and slight rusty nose chrome blend together more. still same style truck.

looks like I have to take notes on this topic=never delt with a waste gate .hope there are pictures.

unfortunately and regrettably I'm not a Veteran. back window of my vehicle has 3 large stickers= NEVER FORGET WHAT OUR VETERANS HAVE DONE FOR THIS COUNTRY = ALL GAVE SOME ; SOME GAVE ALL. the hat in profile picture says ;;; TO ALL VETERANS THANK YOU. I stopped wearing it due to people thinking I was a vet. won't take credit for something that more then earned. I showed my jeep to a Veteran at the show = tears came to his eyes. + THANK YOU TO ALL VETERANS

Hopping in reverse
mechohaulic replied to skydawg's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
I'd say your doing nothing wrong. combo of -1 - gravel surface =2- backing out your driveway , drive train is pulling the truck Not pushing . 3= tire tread possibly not helping++ street tread or bar/gripper tread (on dump). 4= driveway flat or slight incline adding to hop?? -
update:: based on what pictures I could internet find the fire truck is 1953=1955 GMC 630 open top . one picture dated 3 yrs ago for a truck very similar in NY might be the one i saw. faded red with dept name on hood.

in the days before GPS and cell phones , I had the relief driver spot. doing the up state NY run with a LTL9000 twin screw sleeper and 45 ft reefer . it was days of maps and written directions. middle of the night all going well till directions say left turn; ok we can do it. left turn to see a sign says 10 ft over pass ahead.!! 12.6 trailer. now I know the driver who does the route regular; he wouldnt send me wrong. back out to main road . headlites coming towards me ; old pick up stopped - old timer says : lost ?. told him where I was headed. says :follow me. dirt roads not wide enough for two to pass never mind a T/T. dozens of deer standing next to road . come to a WOODEN bridge !! he drove across ; stopped and waited. do I cross or not ; fast and hope or slow and sink. maybe ft on each side to spare. over i drove with the boards creaking ;not steel or concrete . made it. thanked him and continued the route. spoke to the driver following week . says "what the F--k bill !! he laughs and says "oh; the 10 ft sign is only for the arch on ends ; I stay in the center 13 ft. if I could see the bridge or it was day light ; would have been different. yep the fun days.
