another episode of never tooo old to learn. likin the lifter dowel holders. the clothes pins work IF the exhaust manifold is off to access the two side covers.

takes two for reinstall of cam ; important part is working with some one who listens. one under neath assisting cam through has fingers tooo close for comfort if helper installing cam pushes fast and fingers inside eng block get caught on cam lobes vs block. yes; info based on unfortunate experience . the wooden clothes pins were great for the day, sorry for late reply, have been preoccupied last few days.

with front cover removed, reinstall the crank bolt , use spacers if needed . turn engine by hand till ALL the timing marks line up on EVERY gear. remove two(2) opposing bolts of the inj pump drive. DO NOT loosen all 4 . take two bolts (3/8 fine thread ??) cut the heads off. install these two bolts where the two pump drive bolts were removed. SCRIBE 4 lines in the drive gear one on each side of the headless bolts;this gives a very close setting for reinstall;; unit will still need a pump timing for 100% accuracy. I used WOODEN clothes pins to hold up the lifters:: I know what the he-l are wooden clothes pins , as earlier stated """"I'm old very old : LOL cutting this short before it goes blank again.

sadly this new generation has no concept of the sacrifices made years gone by so they can have the freedom taken for granted. worst off is the fact that part of history and much other isn't taught in schools anymore. my step daughter is a teacher ;has been told teaching transgender is more important!!!!! what the F----K

challenge with the steer axle seal is the "wear ring with dowel pin" looks to be part of the spindle . there is also an o-ring inside that wear ring. don't recall the need to change the o-ring, old school seals are taxing the brain cells again;;isn't the steer axle seal a 20?? number series. can picture the seal not the number.

B-73 Restoration
mechohaulic replied to mattb73lt's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
hopefully You video taped the Master at work to show future generations. The list is getting shorter rapidly of those with Rocky's ability. not only the best MECHANIC in todays world ; He is also a VETERAN : I Thank Him for His service. possibly You can use the contents of an package I asked Him to drop off; he should have given you. -
before all the cookouts, hot dogs, hamburgers, and beer: take a moment to reflect on the meaning of the day. If passing a cemetery and notice all the American flags at each headstone, pause for a moment to salute and give Thanks to the many whom gave the Alltimate sacrifice so the cook outs can take place.

guilty in the first degree. even had the base cut to fit the '77 F-350 Ford hood. glad you didn't specify real red neck if you have the F O R D letters replaced with M A C K. guilty as charged. won't mention the Mack mirrors or the half dogs on fenders; rear mud flaps or 13 speed shift knob.

it's the modern way of turning the antenna on the roof to have clearer reception of the two channels that come in on the 10 in black and white TV the lucky people have,

time goes way faster then you think. I've always had a standing "agreement" with my customers when it came time for payment. not to be takin as morbid , just my way. I had 6 customers in agreement that since I carried them (their fleet) for so many yrs they would carry me on my last trip. problem I'm having is they are all passing on before me. the obit I posted couple weeks ago was a truck driver who was one of the six!! sure hope last ride isn't in a car either. LOL

one reason it was difficult to give up my CDL after 50 yrs yet in the real world it isn't worth keeping. in CT i don't even see respect among the big rigs any more.

to be the "old timers " is the easy part ; we will all get there some day. the challenge and hope is that a next generation has the interest and desire to learn and carry on that to which is being past on by this generation of "old timers". after attending the deerfield truck show seeing the iron was good; what has impressed me and became the high light of the show was meeting Hippy( 70 mack MB) and his Son. staying in topic ; reason I mention the show was learning how his son is following in the footsteps of Dad as the next generation of diesel mechanics. I wouldn't give a thought to going to school for the modern electronics in todays trucking industry: I'm the ole timer now.

will try ; just seems it takes longer to keep going. attempted to walk an auction yesterday of HD equipment. did an early start with a walk through and had to leave before it started. 1- knees couldn't take the pain;2- alot of good"stuff" , had to deal in reality :: do I really need more stuff;3- is it worth spending the day to wait for a JD tractor that will be over priced any how !.

THANK YOU . made it to 72.

waterbury Mack had "ole man Dixon" in the machine shop. all he did was transmissions and rear ends. i was told he knew every gear by location from any transmission or rear. put Him to the test . found a gear identified the number / trans model and location. showed it to him . he told me exactly where it went and trans model it came from. I spent many a lunch hrs listening to Him.

change a few names a story I could have written. the ole timers back then had sooo much knowledge , one inspiration for me was the shop foreman at Mack. if i could have tapped into a small part of his knowledge . unknown secret he had was ; he couldn't read or write well.it was hands on that taught him. started as a gas pump boy before it became a Mack dealer. I had/have the highest respect for him. as with many ; he's no longer with us. always figured You must have had a great foundation for the knowledge You express. willingness to learn is important , a concrete influence plays a major role in the desire to learn. SORRY for Your loss.

had to take a moment to ponder the welded pipe on front bumper;;; then realized/remembered it was a protective shield for driveshaft that ran plow pump. just for sake of conversation and based on unfortunate experience ;;I would highly recommend a small block of wood under the extension where breaker bar goes through pipe or under second extension to keep socket square on crank bolt. best is a second set of hands assisting, when the bar slips while you are pushing down you are apt to go for a heck of a tumble ;; just sayin
