  1. make a few phone calls to people such as Matt phahl or other CT people before the phone call to scrap yard. I only rent here in watertown with possibility of moving or I would gladly store stuff for you.
  2. 1=THANK YOU for YOUR SERVICE. 2= the list of things to "throw away " is shorter than what to keep. most times that's not practical, yet there will be days of + darn I shouldn't have thrown that away.
  3. between the pencil and pto shaft . the small shaft pushed in is the aux shaft I was referring to. center is 1/2-5/8th thread. when rear cover is in place, aux shaft in present position. when installing a rear pto that shaft has to be turned 180 degrees : actually sits inside the pto housing. I would assume that pto is being mounted on top right? THANK YOU ;Macks for photo.
  4. no idea how much on a positive I feel now. most of night staring at ceiling trying to remember (yes i did). duel reasons =1- feared I misinformed someone;;2- constantly concerned of mind loss. cover closest is one I remember. by chance is there a picture of back side of transmission showing the aux idler shaft which had to be turned 180 for a pto to be installed ?
  5. I can understand now why you made the comments of the countershaft dropping. makes much sense . which is reason i said DON'T DROP OUT of conversation. I actually confused the topic not realizing a change over in countershaft bearing set up. I didn't remember having to take side cover off. can see why now it would be done.
  6. spent quite a bit of time checking U-tube for a demo of installing rear PTO; none to be found. tried to verify my failing memory of days gone by. going with idea changes have been made to design of transmission.
  7. you don't think your alone in that area do you!!! imagine a calendar of us old folk . now that would be hilarious.
  8. now be careful when you call a'91 OLD AND GRUMPY!! . wish I was in the '91 bracket=NO not age ; all though getting closer. the '91 bracket is called mid life crisis Mack. my class (B models) are old and grumpy. getting back on topic= you came to right place for info. i've learned much here.
  9. think I know where confusion came to be. memory serves correctly; at 2am today staring at ceiling ;;the EARLY 6 speeds had roller bearing for three counter shafts , not bearing/ race combo .when removing lower rear cover for PTO installation there wasn't a bearing race in cover. just a "flat" aluminum cover. hardest part to pto install was turning small idler shaft. never had a situation with dropping countershaft and misaligning timing. spent many hrs in machine shop at Mack and watched the man I considered to be the Master builder. He always prefaced the importance of the timing. a rear 6 speed pto install was done in short amount of time then. the pto went up against bearing /held it in place.
  10. NO that circled item is OIL COOLER. you do NOT have the canister filter.. the three white spin-ons will be your oil filters. great job on the round one clean up.with the eviction of raccoons ; strong suggestion would be to spray fuel/ brake pedals making it easier for future operation. check roller under brake pedal and plunger . raccoon pee can rust out a lot of parts that should move
  11. jack daniels has some input here sorry(your not alone mowerman) ;; long day of air bag changing. correct title may be call an auxiliary side shaft . not counter shaft.
  12. buzzers were loud and annoying true ; also remember the '70's is when head sets started to show up . to eliminate truck noise yuppies wore head sets. wig-wags let them know low air .
  13. 1= a 12 speed may be a different "animal" in terms of PTO internal drive options. would have to be or else the dump pto speeds depend om main in gear. 2=i more then likely confused the issue with improper explanation of early style pto change over
  14. may have confused things stating "necessary to turn COUNTER SHAFT back 180 position"". not one of three main countershafts. sorry all. possibly better title would be rea auxiliary shaft? not sure of proper name description.
  15. lost when trans numbers used ::107/// TRD72 etc.
  16. DON'T BACK OUT; your info more correct based on newer units. my failing memory goes back to when things like rear PTO's were BRAND NEW items. I did a few ;remember the warnings of pulling/turning small shaft near lower cover. NOT ONE OF THE THREE COUNTERSHAFTS shaft stuck out 3/8th in with slot cut in it. rear cover held shaft in some what. tapered press fit in trans housing. rear pto housing wouldn't fit flat without turning shaft. might have been used for oil return to trans after pto installed
  17. the most important thing is to keep the project positive/ fun/ and within budget. the proper 100 score in judging for correctness is long down the road for most. $500.ooo floor mats don't seem all important when a roll of HD rubber material can be cut to cover till time allows for mats having Mack embossed show up.
  18. have designs changed ; if lower rear cover is reinstalled, doesn't the small external shaft near cover have to be turned back and freeze out plug or5/8bolt installed?? to install a rear mount pto after drain/remove cover/knockout center freeze out plug , install 5/8bolt and very gingerly pull back shaft ( 1 1/8 socket ?over shaft)+no more than 1/4 in or shims fall internally. open end/ adjustable wrench and turn shaft 180 degrees so a new pto will fit.
  19. another thought based on yrs back ;the rear mount P T O 's on 6 speeds were constant run when engaged with truck moving or stationary. the side mount 6 speed pto worked off trans being in gear on main. pto speed depended on gear main was in. spreading asphalt was challenging :: truck had to be in low for spreading which was tooo slow for dump/PTO operation. thus the rear mount pto came to be.
  20. this type of procedure it is better to scare someone in doubt of doing the job. WITH TOTAL RESPECT also. pull back on the shaft internal shimms may drop ::correct? it's been a while. should a rear mount P T O be removed and replaced with side mount is it necessary to turn counter shaft back to180 position for a flat recover to fit properly ???? I may be misreading with purpose to remove remote pump , and keep rear mount P T O with self contained pump?
  21. the low air warning(wig-wag) is based on the fact this real working truck has no/ none of todays electronics/ computers to let driver aware air is low. standards back then meant when air was dropping:: "oh ,I can make another 50 miles before I run out. the wig-wag was final notice== Hey driver that's it stop now ::LOL
  22. has something to do with the idea =they make the big bucks and the decisions :the workin folk always question that thought ;don't we.
  23. seems as life goes on the phrase "should have " has become more regular conversation.. common sense still around the should have statement wouldn't be necessary. I can understand a pintle hook on tractor to make use of parked equipment vs buying a new piece which wouldn't have full time use. i take it to be lowbed being used second tractor could be used with a tag trailer.
  24. bright side , he can always remove the tacho rehook to original speedo in dash.
