  1. from a distance the major difference would be longer hood on 700. specs on a 700 VS 600 would have just as wide range as comparing two 600's. chassis rails, eng/trans combo. hood shows it was a V-8; changed to a 6 cylinder . will work for a local running unit. till you see door tag and vin rest will be a mystery. important thing will be price / condition / close inspection to check how change over was done. chassis model will tell what V-8 it had. one stack (Mack)or two 3 1/2 stacks (318DD).
  2. to this day I notice many drivers using the engine brake for "speed shifting"' years back at many classes the instructors specifically stated an engine brake not mattering what manufacture should not be used for shifting. back then a major construction co made it known to its drivers : anyone caught engine brake shifting will be terminated. seems rules must have changed. company still around bigger then ever and I hear their trucks engine brake shifting. sadly they are no longer a Mack co.
  3. the cross over fuel line set up also depended on the fuel tank configuration and model truck. square/ rectangle tanks mounted higher had the crossover line going from rear spring hanger caps ( 4x5 in cap ??) attached to a 1 1/2x2 steel channel . round tanks hung lower (most time) had the cross line tank to tank. always an exception but think about it square tanks were on construction vehicle (off high way usage) , lower round found on highway vehicles. fuel in lower mounted tanks would have to travel on up hill to go on front spring hanger set up.
  4. when billions of $$$ are sent overseas or anywhere for that matter ; it never gets there. all the pockets filled along the way take it. why would FEMA go to a toxic chemical spill ; don't you realize they might get sick. it's high hope that miles of paperwork FEMA has to fill out first will take long enough so the danger will pass.then they can show up when the cameras are there.
  5. i'll go out on a limb with this ; the book a great idea : my first purchase after the powerball win would be all expense trip to central location for all interested on this site for a meet and greet so we can discuss a book. i would arrange it since I worked for Mack AND coca cola ; and you thought i would go off topic. LMAO
  6. AHH the good simple days. back then you could even take a hose and 5 gallon can to siphon fuel or gas. don't want to "drink" that sh-t today.
  7. it's the spacer used to keep compressor head from hitting rear of injection pump. air compressor had the extended drive coupler . darn the parts I threw away. don't have the coupler ; do have the bent modified 3/4 wrench made to get the inner (pain - in- ass ) mounting nut.
  8. And it's NOT my fault THIS TIME ! think I've been much better with off topic this yr; new yrs resolution LOL
  9. I keep looking at that red DMM in this post; can't add another chassis to my "assembly line "right now-1/25th scale. 70 ton beam trailer waiting . have two DM800's in progress. waiting on 10 tires 11:00x 24's . have the parts for a DM600 DMM. springs around the corner and lawns need attention.
  10. Darn do I appreciate this forum. woke up the brain cells Mark T . now i remember the set up. 11/2 angle iron that went inside the gusset on the fuel tank brackets and had spring keeping cross bracket "tight" yet flexible for frame twist. spring went missing the cross bar was bolted tight to tank brackets resulting in worn alum brackets or cracked cross brace leading to fuel line holding angle iron off road. cross line attached to spring caps was good since not as much flex in that area.
  11. one fine looking DM: wait a minute they all are!! 😁
  12. would new rules and regulations come in to effect todays world ?? . cross-over lines on bottom subject to road debris ,which is why modern day units have top draw. cross hose of days gone by were usually #8 or 10 aeroquipt hose clamped to a 1 1/2 angle iron secured to tank brackets with shut offs on both side as 70 mack stated. I'd run the cross line inside a round pipe or tubing to protect it from road debris and weathering. clamping method on tank brackets has to be HD yet allow for frame twist and turn. have seen many a clamp bracket broken with cross line holding support off the road.
  13. whole video was amazing . totally impressed with the welding. haven't seen a weld where the flux curls up like a scorpion tail in years. wonder what else goes on there not being shown? LOL . don't think inner frame rails were tensile steel watching the small drill go through.
  14. intercooler/ tip turbine fan on black one shows a repower ;; 300 plus?? can bring a tear or two to your eye seeing history and beauty being disregarded so many times.
  15. larger brake shoes a positive on vehicles especially dumps . back to original question of air consumption per brake application; based on everything written , i would go with a third tank or larger if room is there. shouldn't have low air buzzer with normal stopping every time. did a reread . this air drop is with engine off not driving. its seems ok then. doesn't state air loss when running. have a great day😄
  16. calling them weak is being real nice. back in '73-74 i filled out more warranty paperwork. should have made up a big sign saying ==I know all they do is make noise . gets me thinking of all the "first I 've seen. == dynatards; kelsey-hayse disc brakes , one positive was the 866 v-8. . dynatards just didn't belong in same category as the jacobs (back then ). course with the dynatard you didn't have to buy 8 in exhaust stacks = they made enough noise.
  17. most slider 5th wheels were 24 inch travel. oil company had to sign off on lots of legal paperwork for the 48 I mounted on the R685. back then the rules started to show up. a fixed wheel was either on center or 6 ahead. a 24 inch slider was 6 in behind center . keep in mind wheel base and customer request set mount locations also. new government regs narrowed mounting options. we all know how knowledgeable the government people are. ask one to find the 5th wheel and they go to the cab, no that's a steering wheel it's not counted as a 5th wheel.
  18. I think people here are missing the point;;it's not about the global warming repair nor the making electricity to save the planet. it's about what's in it for me and how much of that survey money is going into my pocket. greed has doomed mankind . the ones boasting how they will =save the planet - are the ones behind company's doing the damage.
  19. when walking down the diagnostic road , if you don't go on the side trails , you can never expand your knowledge of what could be . oil analyzing is always a critical part of engine diagnostics. this case a noise seemingly coming from #1 cyl may be results of diluted oil in a weak exhaust solenoid . of course I agree. my "book of knowledge " has many blank pages waiting and hoping to be filled in with updated learning from all the talent on this site.
  20. while at the Mack dealership, I mounted a 24 in fixed 5th wheel on a brand new R685st. shortly after it came back in for a new 24in sliding 5th wheel . not long after it came back and I mounted the one and only 48in slider ever done . seems the oil company moved a short pup trailer once a month; not enough to justify another tractor. in furthest rear position the 5th wheel ears hung over truck frame rails. actually saw it going down the highway once. tractor almost as long as trailer.
  21. how bad was damage on the spun a bearing engine? repair to 350 with engine brake not a more feasible idea VS change-over to a 300 possibly unable to have engine brake ??? repair a bearing spin instead of camshaft change.
  22. 10-4 on the reel to reel. age factor takes place when a cassette (picture) is new compared to the "modern" 8 track which was great. LOL . almost think my first vehicle had stone wheels and hole in floor to use your feet to make it move.
  23. would you believe TOOOOO old to remember . I remember doing it can,t remember why. that's OLD.
  24. early dyna versions the exhaust valve was extremely loose until it was brought up to TDC . is it possible to know internal components by removing valve covers / checking valves ???
  25. if the oil was being diluted; would that not lower oil pressure ? more before changing exhaust sound. oil school test (before high -tech heat sensor guns) was the white/ yellow crayon on each exhaust port . check which melted ; changed color // which did not. or the Polack way ::: put your finger on each cyl.🥵
