  1. Ok... this my opinion as a so-so driver of both, and a mechanic.. The 12 spd. is one of my favorites, you can split the gears how you want and you have multi spd. PTO options, and multi spd. reverse.. and the low range's are great.. Now the 310 MLR.. it has multi speed reverse and you can shift it like an 8LL pattern. I dont know about a neutralizer for multi speed PTO's.. I don't remember.. The 310MLR, is still around and parts are readily available. It IS an expensive tranny to fix, but it IS a great tranny.. typically the synchro goes bad if the air system on the tranny is not maintained.. ie: lubed and new o-ring kits periodically, and a shuttle valve here and there.. OK, so there is my take... Let's see what the Dog Pound say's... Jojo
  2. the difference between the drive axles is.. The one with the cone shape is a cap, and the axle is a seperate shaft, and there may still be a seal in the center of the hub to keep oil on the inner bearing and grease on the outer bearing. I have removed that seal and made the whole hub an oil bath type.. The other flat axle cap is a flange and the axle shaft and cap are one piece.. Both seal with good quality RTV, when put back together.. Jojo
  3. both are greased..
  4. Yes sir. So you have the single nut with 2 allen screws and a notch in it, and a lock ring behind it? So basically,,,,, tighten the nut down with about 200+ lbft of torque, ( bearing pre-load) then back it off and put 50+ lbft back on it.. rotate the wheel hub and feel it.. it should have a smooth roll but not tight.. the notch is a sight.. line it up to a space in the lock ring and the 2 set screws will be lined up with a space on each one.. That keeps you aimed right.. I dont have any pictures.. It's not that hard... I like them better than the 3 piece Mack set up.. jojo
  5. Back in the 80's when I lived in Gray, Maine, we used to listen to him every Sunday and Ray Terri and 'The Big Deal'.. On WPOR 101.9 country station Paul always made sense. jojo
  6. My wife found this video. its a few minutes long, and well worth listening to it.. Talk about "Foresight".. 1439d29b24cccce541d2183cb9e96b5b.mp4
  7. Oh,,,, Ok... Glad you caught this one.. jojo
  8. Year?? Tranny?? It's probaly a mechanical, with a rack issue. He is in Nigeria, and I believe they have a lot of OUR old Mack's.. I will try the best I can to help,, There is a great team of guys here that will help as well.. Jojo
  9. That sounds great.. Is that a 64 Scout in the background?
  10. yes sir,, with that said,,, I feel like they used the simplest/most reliable engine and torque/HP, wasnt the issue, as much as the fact that It will run every time you started it, and with an auto tranny, it was surely going to get to the FIRE.. Kinda' like how reliable the VW Beatle was.. Numb as a 'pounded thumb' but would get there.. anyway, my silly take on it..... jojo
  11. I get it Mech.. I was trained by an old A$$hole.. He was the smartest man I knew back then and he could give all the new guys a run for the money.. Earl was the MAN... So I built a '90 E-7 4 valve, 2 1/2 years ago. I also freshened up 2, E-6,, 4 valves in, 2, RW's.. however,, I did not know that a '90 Mack would be spec'd with a 2 Valve.. When I learn something new about these awesome machine's, I store it in my brain, then read about it when I can, usually from my own library... It's Men like you and a bunch of other's here, that amaze me with your knowledge.. Jojo
  12. and a 2 valve at that.. the 4 valve was out 2 -3 years before.. or so i thought.. the last 2 '87 RW's I worked on were 4 valves.. Like I said,, I am bout to learn more stuff,,,, 👍jojo
  13. Since it seems to act right, for the most part... How about spraying a light 20W oil into the intake of the compressor to see if it loosens the unloaders? jojo
  14. I certainly was WAY off.. I do not have the answer for the E-6... sorry... but this picture is from my 1994 book, non-V-Mac specs. It seems to me that it is probably close to that of the E-6 that you have. I dont know if I helped, but,,,, anyway... post the answer when you get it, just curious... jojo
  15. Well, I just went through my book.. I do not have the answer.. I'm sorry... jojo
  16. I think it's around 1450 lbft.. I am going to look at my books.. So you say its a 350, tip turbine??? I'm 'bout to learn something here,
  17. Welcome aboard Sir..
  18. That;s it... I was lost for a bit there,,, You Go... 'F'
  19. I get it... How about enjoying this holiday week with friends and family, and then when thats all done, you will wake up with a clearer direction, and maybe make a plan.. My wishful thinking,,, jojo
  20. the green one is not camelback, its a spring ride but I dont know the manufacturer,, 2 different setups as far as swapping parts.. I also have almost zero knowledge on Mack front loader rears.. I do have book's, in the case I have to study-up... jojo
  21. can you raise the bodies and post pics of the brake chambers? wedge brakes had lateral chambers and s-cam brakes have longitudinaly mounted chambers.. Of course,, I am always eager to learn something even if I need to be corrected.. jojo
  22. that picture shows Mack rears. they are top loaders.. whats in the other truck? I would like to see a picture of a single axle camel back.. never heard of one.. the truck pic you posted is camelback.. I guess that the new truck?
  23. I had the same issue ,,
  24. I do beleive the bolt pattern for wedge brake spider and the s-cam spider is the same.. I assume the same style Mack rear's on both truck's?
