  1. really Bob??? I guess you would need a gallon jug and a 3" paintbrush... jojo
  2. keep this in mind for future tranny issues... In most tranny's each gear has 2 positions.. so if you have an issue in a low side gear, the issue may be in the high side same gear stick position.. (barring a rear box synchro issue) an easy example is a 10 spd.. 1-5 is the same gears as 6-10... same stick positions.. lets say it pops out of 9th, does it do the same thing in 4th? same gear position, but different demands on the tranny.. still,, listen to the gear box.. (sample test here).. truth is... the shift pattern diagram in the truck show's what i'm talking about... jojo
  3. ok, so you have a small air line going to the power divider housing.. No sweat.. still easy to inspect if it goes that far.. let's keep it simple,, refer to my last post. Are you able to hear the noise in slow speeds under 35 MPH? if so,, if you are loaded and on dirt or loose gravel, you can engage the power divider to see if the noise changes or stops.. Don't do this on solid ground or roads above 25 MPH.. also, if your tire wear is mixed , like old tires with barely legal tread and new tires in any position,, on solid ground,,,, this test may make noise.. I cant really draw a good picture of a good testing area.. but I feel like you may be able to separate the sound from the tranny, to possibly the rear end, since you changed 2 bad u-joints, you are obviously narrowing it down.. jojo
  4. 'D Man' nice approach with the temp gun.. I feel like you are smart... jojo
  5. 'D-Man' i have an approach... underneath the rear of the top part of the housing has a 9/16" square plug, or if you have temp sensor then it is 1 1/16" deep chrome socket... remove it to drain the oil from the top reduction housing.. then take the (4) 9/16 headed bolt's out of the side cover. Then you will be able to inspect the top reduction gear set.. (Bevel pinion and Bevel gear) If you see Brinneling on the gear teeth, you may have just found the noise.. if this inspection is good, we can talk about looking at the power divider. Do you have auto power divider or a locker? jojo
  6. do you know how to weld plastic?? its actually easy to do.. jojo
  7. another thing,, when removing the butress bolts, the one behind the air compressor can be removed by taking the bottom plate of the compressor if it a bendix tu-flo. wabco leaves room to get the bolt out, and i forget if midlands have a lower cover.. I think they do.. point is, no need to pull the compressor unless you want to.. I just cut a new gasket out of a sheet and put it back on with Mack RTV when im done with the mains..
  8. like I said... drop the 13 caps, one at a time, inspect each and put it back up to hold the crank.. get a new bearing set, and yes,,, new rod bolt's, which I didnt mention,, and tidy up the bottom end.. small $$ for some security... at least you will know how the crank journals look, and if in the case something else starts 'a' knockin.. the backbone is good.. You will be able to inspect the cam and lifters while you are underneath. take the oil pump out of the way, you can also take the oil pump apart to inspect the impellers and the housing for major scratches on the bottom plate, and on the inside and the brass thrust washer, if equipped... on the upper housing, and pump shaft 'play' should be zero, the gear as well, which I'm sure survived.. put youre eyes on the parts,,, so you can see what you have... jojo
  9. Well, now that Covid is no more than the flu, and Monkey Aids is on the rise but not a big deal,, They found Polio... So what's next... Scurvy, Typhoid fever, Chicken pox, Mabey bad headaches???? and of course all of these new "Variant's" will only dominantly affect the Black and Brown community, and those that live in "Low income area's" Blahh Blahh Blahh... I see more tax money taken from us, to pay for slackers... jojo
  10. one thing I do is put my hand over the end of the tube and just feel the draft.. (I just did this for the ASET-C I just built) I could feel the puffing of the engine, After I took it down, #3+#4 pistons had stuck rings, both were the #2 compression rings. My point here is that if it is not puffing hard it's good, if its just warm and cuddley, and not puffing into my hand.... It's good.. sometimes just how the steam leaves the pipe can tell you.. If it just drifts away, its probably good. if it blows to the ground,, ya got an issue.. Come on Glenn,, Tell me I'm right??? jojo
  11. I always like an 'R' model.. When I got out of R models and DM's, I went into a CH.. It seemed like twice as much room and I did'nt catch my fingers on the vent window, while wheeling around on job site's and tight places .. As far as the title of this post, "Future Mack's?" sounds like an oxymoron, or mabey irony.. jojo
  12. It's Funny how this happen's.. I just saw on the local news in my town... Mailbox bashing spree with baseball bats is on the rise.. I may need to put that spare 1/2 sheet of 1/4" steel sitting behind my shop, to some good use.. Maybe make a spare mail box, just in-case... jojo
  13. funny you say that, I recently have been cutting the cam in 2.. at #2 cyl. lobes... my thought was to remove about 60 pounds, and the distance from the gear was far enough, were the heat of cutting, didnt reach the gear hub.. It worked great and much easier to load into the press.. . jojo
  14. do you have an injection pump with the electric governor housing?
  15. Mackpro, Interesting take on pressing the cam gear.. I just finished 2 in-frames last month.. so far no codes, but I also take car in pressing the gear off, and baking it right, before dropping it on.. I too remember doing cam after cam job back in the early 2000's.. crazy sh!t.. jojo
  16. the 310 is strong, is yours an "M" multi speed reverse... I love multi speed reverse.. jojo
  17. do you feel like they should drop all 13 bearing caps and check for wear? I would, hell get a set of bearings from PAI and roll them in just because.. jojo
  18. there is a spec for cam shaft run out.. but tell me why every time I pull a cam, the thrust washer shows almost no wear.. am I wrong? as far as a different timing cover,, i truly dont know, other than the ASET-C I just built.. which had another 2, 10mm bolt hole topside. So tell me where the 'runout' would occur? I would like to know if I am missing something, before I build another E-Tech/ASET.. jojo
  19. yeah just take the shim off, put it in your pocket, and run the truck again.. yes there are 2 availble shims. yours is probably .030" .. see what happens.. jojo
  20. 8LL Eaton is a great tranny.. The 310M is also great.. Myself.. when I drove dump trucks. I learned to love multi speed reverse.. My first was the 1070B and the X107 twin stick.. however, the 2013/2018, will get the job done... you'll need to have the get the drive shaft re-done.. anyway, you are in a great place for REAL knowledge.. jojo
  21. maybe a 2013/2018?? We'll see what the 'Dog Pound' say's... lots'a smart guy's here that can spec out a good truck.. jojo
  22. Im just curiuos?? does it really make a difference if it's an E-9 instead a 6 cylinder, since it is gear driven and not counting electric pulses from a distributer in a gas engine? I ask because I would expect this to be easy to replace.. jojo
  23. thats cool, N.Y. City used to put plows on their MR trash trucks.. MR's Kick A$$.. jojo
  24. back in the '80's.. we lived in Maine, on a country road.. 6 houses in a 2 mile stretch, our house was 500 feet off the road,, (Perfect place to live) anyway, same issue, someone kept hitting our mail box. the tire marks made it look like they pulled up to it and pushed it over.. At night we could see the headlights when they did it.. then they would squeal the tires as they left. pretty 'Ballsy' ... My Dad went out there and dug a hole were the tire marks were, away from where the mail truck ran. he put a piece of plywood over the hole, and covered it back up with the sand that was around the mail box.. It worked.. when they came back and fell in the hole,, we could here the tires spinning trying to get out.. My dad couldnt get to the end of the long driveway, before they got un-stuck and left.. That was the last time.... accept for when someone put a snake in it.. jojo
  25. Here in my 'Hood'.. my mailbox stays put, it can spin if hit.. We just have 'Drive by shootings' Like the one last monday.. 20 rounds were fired.. anyway, just lookin for a laugh.. Jojo
