  2. Well its a nice truck but at 180 a ton your looking at 1800 in scrap value. And you might get half that. Its a damn shame if you scrap it.
  3. The tags for the video say: 396 explode. Don't know what a 396 is and the valve covers are notched at the top between the cylinders. Its no Mack engine. Most Euro V8's have individual cylinder heads such as those from MAN, Scania and Mercedes. In fact if you look the vertical pipe obscures the divide between what could in fact be individual cylinder heads.
  4. I remember: If the truck does not stop you have wedge brakes. If it stops you may or may not have wedge brakes.
  5. Both put together.
  6. NICE! An E9 Ultraliner. Too bad it is not a heavy spec.
  7. Thats a dam shame. What led to this decision? Too many accidents or a bogus move to save the roads?
  8. John, Thanks again for posting pictures of this awesome truck. If you don't mind, what did Jersey do with their weight laws that threatens the use of this truck? You mentioned you were able to put 800 pounds per inch width of tire, what has it changed to now? Oh, I found a DM800 out on Long Island with the big 23 front and 80k rears on walking beam, just like Conforti's truck. Setup as a dump truck on what looks like 12.00R24 rubber. If I had the money I would buy that beast in a heart beat! Listed on truck paper: http://www.truckpaper.com/listingsdetail/detail.aspx?OHID=2276377. Would make one serious tractor.
  9. Ouch. But seriously, they need to get their act together. All this help will most likely yield nothing as they have no industry to support an economy. Without an economy they will continue to live in poverty which leads to crime and lawlessness because of desperation. I hate to say it but all of the worlds efforts to help them are for naught. They could rely on agriculture for generating money but they have no infrastructure to support such an industry.
  10. Now here is one hell of a heavy spec dump, a DM895SX: http://www.truckpaper.com/listingsdetail/detail.aspx?OHID=2276377 8 spoke rears on walking beam (80k?) and a front axle that is probably 23k. Hey john, maybe I can build Conforti another DM800 tractor .
  11. That's why that driver and company have the right to take the matter to court. I do when we get bull shit tickets. I would rather loose a days pay in court than give it to the morons who run this city. I would love to start a campaign that told everyone in new york city to plead not guilty on every ticket given out. The system would collapse.
  12. Auction off the LR, spring? I wonder what it will fetch. I wouldn't mind owning it.
  13. Thanks for the LR picture. I really like the big Mack iron such as the LR's, M's and big B, R, DM800 etc. Imagine owning an M or LR and bringing it to Macungie. Maybe run over a few Volvo's on the way over just to show em who's boss. I hear the Pyle construction M100 just sits and when I went to the yard to inquire about it the fella (dont know who he was) asked me if I wanted to buy it. Now that is a Mack to bring to Macungie!
  14. Trichlor is real nasty, not surprised someone died from it. In the early half of last century it was used as a volatile anesthetic and even in the food industry. You can still get it as they have a 55 gallon drum they use replenish the vapor degreaser. Once I got a good whiff of the stuff and I had to sit down for a few seconds. I now hold my breath as I open the top of the machine to move the baskets around. Got a drop of it on my forehead and it burned like a bastard, felt like someone was pressing a hot soldering iron to my skin. I dabbed it off and rinsed the spot with cold water and it helped but that spot remained sore for a day. Acetone is actually pretty safe and although it will burn your skin after prolonged contact, wearing gloves solves that problem. Personally I prefer to wear gloves when handling solvents anyway so its a non issue. The less hazardous stuff I come in direct contact with the better.
  15. Pointless but Trichloroethylene does a dam fine job in a vapor degreaser. At work we have one and it cleans off just about anyhting and leaves nothing behind, evaporates very very fast as well. BUT its toxic and disposal is controlled, usually you reclaim it with a special machine or recycle it. We also use Acetone and it too dries clean and is far less toxic than trichlor. But I am not sure if acetone is cheap, I believe its about $450-550 for a 55 gallon drum. You can reclain it using a reclaiming machine, we have a smaller reclaimer on site that recycles the acetone for less sensitive uses.
  16. Int the mid to late 90's Mack finally decided to go into Marine and Industrial power. I think they even had a website: www.mackpower.com. After the Volvo takeover the site was shutdown and redirected to mack trucks website. Would be cool to see generators, dozers, scrapers, crushers, loaders and other equipment powered by Mack engines. Volvo has their Penta division that produces industrial engines, marine engines and marine drive lines.
  17. That is a pretty cool idea. Shame the truck was cut but in a way its is still good to see it working and not completely scrapped. Makes you wonder why Mack never tried to get into the Industrial and Marine engine business sooner. I bet they would have done well in those areas.
  18. Dont know the details but I have head this mentioned. I wonder what the real story is. I doubt MAN would throw money away and risk their own products because of IH. SCR is the easiest method for controlling NOx. And if this super EGR system fails I bet MAN has an SCR backup or at least I hope they do. They should have learned from CAT's ACERT mistake. Don't put all of your eggs in one basket. In this day and age you either have a working system or you dont. That being said, I don't think International or MAN would be foolish enough to invest in a system that will not work.
  19. SISU from Finland? They use Renault branded Volvo engines. And by Tier 4 do you mean Euro 4?
  20. Probably using a shorter fuel tank, butt he urea tank next to it and then use a cover to make it look seamless.
  21. Bluetec is Mercedes SCR technology. In Europe DEF is called AdBlue. The international approach does indeed look very complex but MAN is also using the same technology. International is not in this alone. As for heat rejection, their new system is designed to handle the heat load through the crazy radiator system. Lets not jump to conclusions and bash them yet. Wait and see what happens in the long run first. They might have a winner on their hands.
  22. All i can say is wow. You guys are doing a beautiful job on the truck. Cant wait to see it all finished. You also are really giving me and I am sure others some direction for future restoration projects. I like the detail work you did on the cab with the insulation and bed liner.
  23. You are 100% correct! A friend of mine is short and was always picked on. So what did he do? Become a cop of course! You should see the pair he thinks he has now when we go to bars (and he doesn't even bring his gun). But thankfully he isn't a prick when on the job. He treats it as a regular job and does what he has to do without taking his problems out on others.
  24. For the most part that is true. But International needed their own big bore engine and worked out a deal with CAT. They will create a MAXXForce 15 from a bare C15 block and fit it with their own fuel and emissions systems. Probably high pressure common rail with either some crazy EGR system or maybe even SCR. Either way the core of their engine is a CAT C15 so the big bore CAT fans still have an outlet to get their fix. The other day there was a news post that reported International is still making money because their advanced EGR will meet 2010 without SCR. Owners like the idea of having less junk hanging off the truck. IH is attracting lots of buyers with that tech and its back by German truck Maker MAN who Rudolph Diesel worked for when he invented his engine.
