  1. Post. NOW.
  2. The torque converter is the key to smooth operation. ZF of Europe has a torque converter add on for their transmissions called the WSK. Used frequently in heavy haul, the WSK allows you to come off the clutch and get smooth acceleration with no jearking on the driveline. Some models can be fully locked up and they all feature an integrated retarder to aid in stopping. It mounts to the engine like an auto would and then has a flywheel like housing so the manual bolts right up. It moves the tranny back about 12 or so inches but they run cabovers with cable shifters so its not so much a problem for Europe. Would be nice if Allison or Eaton would make one for the US market. Then any manual box can have the automatic smoothness in terms of acceleration.
  3. Good point! I tried calling a friend in Germany once and the call didn't go through. Went to work and called from there and it worked. Turns out my home phone isn't setup for international calls.
  4. Signs and flags aren't enough. I still think she would be pulled over for not having an escort car. Now as for mommas sister, all i have to say is "fat bottom girls you make the rockin world go round".
  5. He needs a saddle otherwise he is going to feel real soar the next day. That or a shot gun.

    Mag Drill:

Milwaukee would be my first choice for corded power tools. I have a bunch of Milwaukee power tools and they just keep going and going. DeWalt is my next pick, they are very sturdy tools and have the best cordless tools around unlike Milwaukee who's cordless tools are made in China .
  7. 1&2 YES there were 6x4 10 wheelers produced with 2 head lamps per side. check my gallery link
  8. Thanks for the advice everyone. It does appear the 350 should be able to handle the load. The big problem is it sits and sits and sits, It has only 33k on the clock! When it goes out it does not go far, only locally so your lucky if you put 20-30 miles a day. Plus the fact that it does not go out every day during carnival season and it sits all winter long. Plus given the fact that until 2002 the truck has lived next to the ocean at my uncles house so the salty sea air doesn't help the problem either. It definitely does not appear to run properly and takes a while to warm up. It actually has a choke knob, something I thought would be long gone for a 1988 when fuel injection was around. I just wish the air injection system wasn't there because it makes getting at the engine very difficult. I will dive into in the upcoming week and see what I can find. phantom309, It does run very rich, the exhaust smell can knock you out and it smokes and back fires a bit while warming up. Not loud but a puffing sound accompanied by a short dim flame from the exhaust. That muffler has seen allot of back fire and fire. The day the carb went on the tri-borough it would not start and I had to be towed home. the next day it started again but would quickly stall but it had to go out and we sent it out. Our driver thankfully is a veteran truck driver and when the carb started in with problems he knew how to get it going again. But it was shooting 3-5 foot flames from the tail pipe due to the carb float getting stuck flooding the engine with gas. We had the carb rebuilt but it still does not burn right even after sending it to two repair shops. I will look into this.
  9. Carnival season is about to start and this year we are going to fix up our truck mounted swing ride (half moon). The current truck chassis is a 1988 GMC 6000 with a 170HP carbureted small block that has been giving us plenty of problems. Since the truck weights about 16000 empty (guesstimate) the underpowered 350 and 4 speed cause the engine to overheat and run very hot. I have had one engine fire from spilled oil and twice had the carb rebuilt. The thing has dual air injection pumps and a maze of emissions hoses which have caused numerous vacuum leaks I had to fix. One hot day while crossing the tri-borough bridge I had to drop to 3rd and the engine was pulling hard, so hard it was starting to overheat and the carb went causing the exhaust pipe to turn into a flame thrower. I had the radiator checked and thermostat replaced but sill gets real hot. When you shut the engine down, its so dam hot it "diesels" and backfires so you have to be quick and leave it in gear and pop the clutch when the engine slows enough. It doesn't look or sound good when you pull up to a block party and the damn thing back fires and scares the hell out of everyone. It also burns rich and when you have to start the stupid thing to leave you wind up choking everyone out with the noxious exhaust. I need to know if someone has experience with this crazy engine or an expert in chevy engines to give me advice (i know some of you have race cars, Larry ). No one has been able to solve the overheat (most likely because engine is over working) or clean up the exhaust. Also a new transmission would be great as 4 gears is simply not enough, I need a 5 or 6 speed truck tranny for a gasser. The brakes are hydraulic disc and rear axle is a single speed. I have come up with a few options to solve the problem: -Replace 350 engine with a big block setup for truck applications and 5/6 speed for extra gears -Rebuild 350 for more power and torque and 5 or 6 speed -Replace gasser with a smaller diesel like an old mechanical cummins isb or a detroit 6v53t -"New" truck chassis like an old Mack B or R model with lowered suspension and tires (favorite option) All have their pros and cons. A simple swap out to a bigger engine is likely the most cost effective option. Rebuilding the 350 is a bit out of my league but I have a family friend who does engine work with his brother, a drag racer. Swapping in a diesel will require extensive work including having to fab mounts, brackets and modify the fuel system. A restored classic Mack would be my dream but it will be costly and take a while to complete. I might just try and shoot for an old Mack and restore the chassis then work the truck for this season with the GMC and a new/fixed engine. An old Mack painted up to look pretty will sell the ride and will look sweet pulling up to an event. Great way to advertise.
  10. Welcome aboard and I must say you have a very interesting job! I always loved the heavy haul aspect of trucking as the equipment gets big and more interesting. I have heard of Malbros but I did not know they also owned a DM800 with the planidrive axles. A fellow member (45LMSWM) used to work for Conforti and he has been helping me track down some of the big Mack trucks used in north east heavy hauling. With his help he pointed me to the largest truck Mack has ever made, the M100, which just happens to be in my area. I would like to know what became of that DM800 as Central Jersey Trucking has one that was originally powered with a 325HP ENDT865 V8 and a 5 speed! They replaced the V8 engine/trans with a 400HP CAT 3406A and put a Fuller 13 behind it with a Spicer 4 speed aux. It was built in Canada and originally pulled a dump trailer at a mine. I really would like to know what became of the Cummins powered beast that Malbros had, sounds similar to Centrals truck.
  11. Thanks for that picture and information Steve! Barry if it had 2 sticks it was the older 2 stick 12 speed, it had a stick for shifting into the deep reduction range instead of a dash mounted air switch. You get a chance to snap a picture of the units? Would also be nice to know if the remains could be purchased sans axles. 80k Mack rears aren't hard to find.
  12. WHAT! What a shame, I feel like calling the owner a sack of S#@T but then again they are his trucks he can do what he wants. Damn even if the rears were removed they would still be worth restoring.
  13. Is the boost pressure drop intermittent or continuous? Has the after cooler and other intake plumbing down stream been checked for leaks? Bosst pressure is not measured by turbo speed, but rater and air pressure sensor. The air system for the brakes might have the air compressor plumbed into the intake system. Not sure what compressor is used. But the constant purging is not related to intake plumbing. You sure the compressor, dryer and governor were in fact changed out for new units? A bad Dryer purge valve, governor or leak would be responsible for the purges. Does it only happen when running down the road or will it constantly purge when stopped? The truck most likely has air suspension so that might be a first place to look. What dryer does it have?
  14. Those look like custom built heavy haulers. Are they from factory or built from Mack parts? You have any more pictures or bigger shots of them? If you found them on a web site please give us the link. Looks like it has 24" rubber and might have 65-80 K rears or planidrive axles. Looks like a V8 Valuliner with a steel hood on steroids.
  15. MAN and International are working on advanced EGR. MAN and IH do not have any publicly announced plans for SCR as of yet. But Euro 6(2012)/EPA 2010 could change that. And how can they resist? They were fined millions for not complying with the 2002 regulations because ACERT took too long to implement. No body has a choice, once its law you have no choice but to comply or face serious fines that could put you out of business. CAT, Cummins, Detroit, Mack etc. have no say as to what emission they want to follow, the EPA says jump and they say how high. My take? Screw any emissions higher then EPA 2007. 2007 has stuck us with a bulky DPF and all the headaches that go along with it. Now we will have to add an SCR system on top of the DPF and EGR system. Just wait till the fun starts when DPF's clog, SCR injection nozzles clog, running out of DEF and setting the truck in limp home mode with no gas station or DEF in sight. It will be fun times for sure. Oh and California CARB board members should all be forced to only make money with pre 2007 trucks in their own state. Good luck morons. And wait until those bastards infect other states with that panzy post 2007 emissions only laws. Then we can all have fun updating our trucks with DPF's and most likely have to upgrade to new engines just to keep em running. F#%@ you! Instead of making BS feel good laws to screw the working class (who pay most of the taxes) they should instead help our economy by investing in alternative fuels and power programs to help the environment.
  16. That video was made by our very own Maxxville. Still get a kick out of it.
  17. The listing shows RWS788ST but in his listing he lists it as a "1981 MACK SUPERLINER ROAD TRACTOR MODEL RWS770LST". So it just might be a factory setup.
  18. 3000Nm (newton meters) is 2212 ft/lbs. Just type "3000 newton meters in foot pounds" (without the quotes) into google. You can do many other conversions as well. The European truck makers have ALLOT of interesting and cool truck tech, in fact MAN calls it Trucknology. The MAN Hydrodrive hydrostatic front axle was developed by Poclain Hydraulics and MAN is the first to bring it to market. Poclain is bringing the Addidrive system to the USA using a Dana 12-20K front axles and Bendix s-cam drum or air disc brakes. It uses a PTO hydraulic pump for power so it can be fitted to any truck, hopefully Mack makes it an option. On highway planetary drive axles are another thing that they have over there but we only have in very limited form. Meritor is offering planetary drive axles specifically tailored for the US market using standard brake parts. Pair those with addidrive and your (almost)never going to get stuck at a job site again. ISRI (Isringhausen) Seats are actually standard in Australian Macks last time I checked. They are real comfortable and have a dozen or so adjustments.
  19. I believe you mean this article: http://www.todaystrucking.com/news.cfm?intDocID=21114 Interesting picture! IH is going to avoid SCR and since they are backed by MAN They will pull it off. Rudolph Diesel invented his engine while working at MAN, if anyone knows diesel its MAN.
  20. I just saw this on TP and was amazed to see a Silver 8v92 Superliner. Somehow I am not too sure if its a factory original because a 12 speed behind a Detroit doesn't makes sense as it would most likely be a fuller 13. Is the 88 engine code correct for a Silver 92? Either way its in good shape and not too expensive.
  21. Funny you ask! I was on Hanks forum and came across a post with a link to some blog with a tricked out K100. So among the links on the side I noticed one with a "must be 18 mature content" warning and so I jut had to click it.
  22. Ok I should have known a site like this existed but none the less I was pleasantly surprised. Problem is it contains adult material so I will not directly link to it. Just google "stacks and cracks" . Full of Petes and KW's, we need to get a bull dog on there! A B model or Superliner would be perfect. Maybe Rob can model lol! The internet never ceases to amaze me. Barry, I hope this isn't inappropriate.
  23. IH did ALLOT of engineering on the MAN D20, its totally different than the MAN design. CAT blew it with ACERT, too heavy and not very well proven. Even the MAXXforce uses a twin turbo setup but has air-water intercoolers after each turbo. That means there is no front mounted air-air intercooler! The idea is to manage engine heat with a larger radiator and provide a way to help cold starting and provide rapid engine warm up. Interesting stuff. Would be nice to see some of this tech applied to the C15 (or is that the 3406) block. And when 2010 rolls around, IH will be good and ready.
  24. I was going to say they might be there for air control of the trailer. dumpers might have it to lock/unlock the tail gate or some bulk/tanker trucks use the air to pressurize the tank to unload quicker. Might be one of those or some other use for controlled air lines.
  25. So the emergency/supply and service are each tee'd to a pair of glad hands all in the same spot? And it has air to the rear? So you have six glad hands in total? Maybe the truck pulled a goose neck dolly for a lowboy and the dolly and lowboy were separately connected to the truck.
