Good point Chuck. I haven't seen any pre-fmvss 121 brake diagrams save for one from a Canadian commercial driving manual. But all in all the simple trailer plumbing diagram remains unaffected. But your experience with trailer wheels locking up definitely shows the advantages of the newer system with relay valves.

Little "tugger" Showed Up:
ThaddeusW replied to Rob's topic in Exterior, Cab, Accessories and Detailing
I think it will pull more then just you lol. -
Ok diagram time! This is a very basic single circuit air brake diagram for a 2 axle strait truck. The single circuit was replaced by a dual circuit system back around 1978-1980. A) Air compressor B ) Governor C) Air dryer (may or may not be present on your truck or plumbed the same) D) Wet tank. This is the primary air storage tank that supplies accessories (air wipers, suspension, seat, horn etc.) and the brake system. E) Brake tank. stors air for the brake system. proteced from the wet tank by a check valve so a badly leaking accessory line wont drain the brake tank. F) Pressure gauge in the cab to monitor system pressure. G) Foot valve, single circuit type. H) quick release valves are usually found mounted right to the axle and exhaust the air pressure close to the chambers to improve brake response. I) front brake chambers J) Parking dash valve K) relay valve. This allows the rear brakes to respond quicker to the foot valve. The controll port just meters air pressure from the brake tank to the rear brake chambers. L) Rear brake chambers. Blue is the normal service chamber and red is the spring emergency/parking chamber. M) Inversion valve or anti compunding valve. Prevents the release of the spring chambers when your foot is on the brake pedal to avoid damage to the brake chambers. Ok now to add a trailer you need to make the following connections: A) Trailer air supply dash valve. B ) Trolly Valve C) Three way check valve. Prevents the trolly valve from applying the tractors brakes while allowing the tractor to controll both. D) Tractor protection valve. A simple valve that uses the emergency supply pressure to hold the service line open. In the event of a leak or break away the tractos brakes are isolated to prevent loss of brakes. E) Service line and glad hand for trailer F) Emergency/supply line and glad hand for trailer Now this is a very simple setup and your trucks system can vary but this is a good guideline. Find an open port on your brake tank, tap a line off the foot valve delivery port and a line off the delivery port off the parking dash valve and you are set. Then some simple plumbing and you have trailer air lines! Like freightrain said use the plastic DOT rated tubing. You can get valves with quick connect ports that the tubing just slides and locks into. No hose barbs or clamps to futz with. You can buy it online from Mcmaster Carr and they also have tube to pipe adaptors so you can hook into your existing system. Just type DOT into the search. Any further questions, let us know.

Mack Spec Sheets
ThaddeusW replied to james j neiweem's topic in Modern Mack Truck General Discussion
Hmmm odd how those export sheets are in imperial measurements instead of metric. 3p, Have any pictures of a Euro spec Mack? Would be interesting to see one. Also do they sport a meritor driveline with 335mm euro mount wheels? -

There are plenty of Aussies on this forum! I do believe that those scoops are designed to remove rain from the incoming air.

OakRidgeMack, I assume you want to add trailer air lines correct? Well if you only have a yellow park knob then your going to need a few parts to get yourself setup. Just like Larry said, a tractor protection valve and the red trailer supply dash valve along with a trolley valve (trailer hand brake) and a few other valves. Ok if you truck is older than 1980 then you most likely have the single circuit air brake system. If its a single circuit system then pluming will be a bit easier. Get a line from the brake supply tank and plumb it to the dash valve supply port and the trolley valve supply port. Then plumb the dash valve delivery port to the emergency/supply port on the tractor protection valve. next, using a three way check valve tee off your foot valves delivery port and the trolley valve delivery port and connect that line to the service line supply port on the tractor protection valve. Then just run the red emergency/supply line and blue service line to a set of glad hands and your set. Few notes: The trailer supply knob has a third control port that needs air pressure to allow the charging of the trailer air tanks. You plumb that port to a tee you install after the yellow park dash valve. This enables the yellow knob to not only park the truck but also the trailer as well. A three way check valve allows two different air sources to supply a single delivery port. Any more question and I can whip up a diagram for you.

I dont think used motor oil is a good idea. I read an article from the US Army and they exprimented with adding used motor oil to their diesel fuel to cut fuel costs and eliminate the need to dispose of used motor oil. They used a Cummins powered 5 ton and after the test period it was said to lead to a lot more buildup of gunk in fuel lines and valves. Maybe in very small amounts like a few quarts here or there just to get rid of the stuff might be fine. But I would avoid very high ratios.

Very interesting! Hmm no more CAT options for other makers? Looks like the USA is moving from vendor engines to propriety engines or exclusive deals. We now have: Mack: Volvo engines International: Proprietary MAN design and CAT for big bore most likely. PACCAR: Cummins PX6(ISB) ; PX8(ISL) ; ISX and the proprietary DAF MX engine Freightliner brands: Detroit and Mercedes engines along with Cummins

Ok at Macungie I got to talking to a gentleman about Gerhart's mint Ultraliner and he said they had four bag cab air Suspension. He said not only did it have 2 bags at the rear but also 2 air bags up front. Is this true? I have also never seen any other engine in an MH save for the E6 350 and E9 V8. I suppose the E7 was available later on but what about CAT, Cummins and Detroit? I saw a glider MH on eBay with a Detroit 6-71 and an Allison from an old fire truck.

F Model Pics
ThaddeusW replied to sodly's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Thanks for that info Skip! Wow the same company that made the plastic Atkinson 3800 (my fav Australian truck) also made the fiberglass F cab. Very interesting. I assume the front and side body panela are fiberglass? I wish trucks down under werent so expensive otherwise I would love to import an old fiberglass F Model (along with a Plastic Atki 3800!). I love the F model and there were quite a few interesting options or changes made that were never offered here in the USA or was very limited in release. Those include: Air ride cab (Europe only?) Axle back (Europe and Down under, called the FM I believe) High rise Aerodyne sleeper option (only a hand full in the US, only saw one restored. plenty of pics of them from down under) Fiberglass cab (Down under for better cooling in the Outback) If anyone can clarify this please let me know. -
A little update: We had a bad storm here this past saturday and after I got home from Macungie I found that my roof antenna took a direct lightning hit. everything electronic was blown out including my computer and all related networking equipment along with two of our TV's (one of which was my own personal HDTV/computer monitor that cost me $900). So today I finally had a chance to scrounge up a spare DSL modem and router from a friend and got back oneline but I am using an old laptop and another computer booting linux off a USB thumb drive. I am in the process of accessing the damage to my main computer. So far the disks seem intact but it might be a while till i get up and running. So for now the photos will have to be put on hold .

I sure did. Too bad the heat made it a bit uncomfortable. I will compile the pictures of 4 different cameras on Monday and link to it. One truck that got away was a long wheel base 6x4 chain drive half cab looking AC model. It was on a trailer, Anyone get a shot of it? Another Interesting truck was an offset cab LM tractor.

I just noticed those Aussie F model cabs sure sit higher then the North American F models. -
Ok not to sound negative but skip the pete look. Its a Mack not a paccar! That superliner grille that Mike mentioned sounds cool, any pictures of one?

Just a shot in the dark but I would hazard a guess on 23K-26K.

F Model Pics
ThaddeusW replied to sodly's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Don't know if you like Australian trucks but here is one impressive F model pulling a livestock road train: That grille was only available on V8 powered F models in Australia and New Zealand. I also have pictures of a few 6x6 and a 4x4 F models from down under as well. Also of note the now defunct Australian truck maker Leader used the F cab on one of their trucks. They were used as twin steer 8x4 dump trucks and had CAT 3208 boat anchors and a fuller 13 speed behind it. -
Sodly, The 12 Speed Sort of shifts like a Super 10. you have 5 gears and you split each one from first to fifth. you can use any of the five gears in reverse. the other 2 gears come in by flipping the dash switch or second stick into low. You then use 1st in low or high split as 2 very low crawler years.

Ok I saw this on eBay a little while back but it just appeared again. So I have to ask, was this setup actually offered from factory? Amazing to see an all Mack drive line with air disc brakes along with daytons. Any ideas on who made the brake components? Barry could you look this up for me if I get the VIN#?

D42 On Ebay.
ThaddeusW replied to ThaddeusW's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Ok what was I thinking of then? I thought one of our members had a one-of-a-kind prototype Mack. -
Found this on Ebay. Correct me If I am wrong but I thought that there was only one prototype that Doug had. Am I thinking of another model?
