Hmmm odd problem. What version of windows do you have or are you on a Mac? I would try this if you have windows XP: -First find a picture online that you want as your background. -Right click the picture and click "save picture as" -Save it under "My Documents" (you can click the my documents button on the left of the save picture window, maybe even make a seperate folder for your background) -Ok go to your desktop and right click it and click properties. -Once in the display properties click the desktop tab at the top. -You should see a dialog box full of pre installed backgrounds, backgrounds you have previously set, as well as backgrounds that are set by your web browser. to the right is a button marked browse. Click that. -Click the my documents button and then double click on the image you saved. -Now click ok at the bottom of the display settings window and your background should come up and stay up. If that doesent work then you have a problem that I cant put my finger on.

No. The torque of the 707 is much much lower then the 237. The 237 will twist that old 5 speed apart. It might last for a while but someone here will know better. We are talking about 820 foot pounds of torque from that 237. Whereas the 5831 is rated at only 275 ft/lbs. So its a no go. There are heavier aux transmissions availible for that kind of torque. Well depends on the setup but it follows the same basic shift technique of the two stick Mack transmissions. You split each gear so its 1st-direct-hi, 2nd-lo-direct-hi etc...

Looking For Feedback On Ihi " Intrax " Air Rear Susp.....
ThaddeusW replied to waslucky's topic in Driveline and Suspension
Ah I know allot about the Titan and Australian trucking . Mack Australia has allot of models that we don't: Titan, Superliner, Trident, Quamtum, Valuliner, and Metroliner. Mack does have a Titan at their test track in Pennsylvania. I would love to import a 610HP E9 powered titan and convert it to left hand drive. Only problem is Aussie trucks are expensive so even a used one will cost as much as a new CH here. My other favorite Aussie truck is the old fiberglass cab Atkinson 3800. Id love to get one with a Cummins 903 or Detroit 8v92 in tipper configuration. I love those road trains and B double/triples, some truckies here would move to Australia just to drive them. Biggest we have here are called Turnpike doubles which gross out at a meager 59 tonnes and are only allowed on a very limited amount of toll roads. They reach 36.5 meters with ~31 meters allowed for the trailers and ~6m for tractor. The 11 axle B doubles in the state of Michigan gross out at 72.5 tonnes but are very short. They haul allot of steel coils and such. -

I hate to break it to ya but no heavy truck transmissions here in the USA is synchronized. The Eaton 5 and 6 speed medium duty transmissions are synchronized but the most torque is 860 foot pounds. In Europe they are all Synchronized and they use single heavy counter shafts with helical gears. We may sound behind here in the USA but there isn't a big technology push. The reason is what we have works fine and gets the job done. Sure the European trucks might sound technology superior but guess what they are expensive, heavy and do the same amount of work.

You can hook up a newer CB and radio BUT you cannot let the metal case of the CB or radio touch any metal part of the truck. Hook the red positive wire to the chassis and the black negative to the electrical system.

Looking For Feedback On Ihi " Intrax " Air Rear Susp.....
ThaddeusW replied to waslucky's topic in Driveline and Suspension
Can you explain who IHI is and what INTRAX is? INTRAAX is the name of Hendricksons trailer air suspension. So its a bit confusing. If you have a link to their website that would be great. 90 tonnes (198,416 lbs!) is allot of weight, Hendrickson HAS here in the US for 46 rears is rated at 68 tonnes and 25% off road. Neway is your best bet for off-road and road train work. Tandem 46 Neway is rated to 86 tonne and I am sure would have no problem handling 90 tonne. Plus its 100% rated for off road work. I know trucks and truck parts are expensive down under but maybe you can try a truck parts company here in the US. Someone might have that setup you want for about 3000-3500 USD. Many offer export services so shipping to you wont be a problem. -

Ah so the injectors do have a certain order. I would have thought that it didnt matter since they all do the same thing.

How Many Macks Do You Have
ThaddeusW replied to JHodges's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Looks like I get to reply to this post Not a full truck but the dogs guts so to speak. ENDT673T with the water cooled Schwitzer turbo hooked to a TRTL72. Someday I might find a truck to put it in. -
Thanks guys. Everything is coming off smoothly but I think the exhaust manifold will be a whole different story. Some studs look like someone smashed them so ill have to try and cut the ends off. Hopefully I can get them off this weekend.

Ahh so they are toward the tip of the injector you mean.

OK I got to the engine again today. I removed the front water manifold (proper term?) and began to pull the injectors. The No.1 injector is kinda rusty, but it came out without much effort. The intake valve for the No.1 cylinder does appear to be open so I guess it has seen some water. The No.2 and No.3 injectors look decent and came out by hand once I pried them loose. I sprayed a good amount of PB into each injector hole to get things loose. Now my question is how do I properly remove the heads? Do I remove the rockers, and if so is there a right and wrong way to do so? Those springs look tough and I don't want them flying off. What about the push rods do they come out and easily go back in? Once I loosen the head bolts the head should come right off correct? Picture time: Head with injectors and valve cover removed: Injectors, in the order in which they were in the engine from left to right. Now the injectors do come appart right? I see a hex on the top part and the lower part has two flats to hold the injector as you unscrew the top. Also I am guessing that it doesent matter where each injector goes as far as cylinder number as they all look the same. There was no washer between the injector and head only a cloth or paper seal.

Rob, The three lines and plug are all thats needed. As for the air leaking sound, the governor sends out positive pressure to hold the unloader valve in the compressor open. This stops the charge cycle and that same air signal also triggers the purge cycle of the air dryer. The governor does have an exhaust port, that might be the leaking sound but thats normal. 130 PSI sounds normal as the pressure relief valves in the brake system are set at 150 PSI. Turning that pressure down is possible by adjusting the governor cut out pressure via a screw on one end. But some governors are not adjustable like the D2-A from Bendix. Here are the instructions for the D2 from the Bendix website: To raise the pressure settings, turn the adjusting screw counter-clockwise. To lower the pressure settings, turn the adjusting screw clockwise. Note: Be careful not to overadjust. Each 1/4 turn of the adjusting screw raises or lowers the pressure setting approximately 4 psi.

CO2 free? How? If they burn hydrogen then yes I can see that there would be no carbon emissions. But bio diesel and all the other gases are hydrocarbons. Where is the crabon going? -
Hmmmm. The 866 had a lower torque then the 865? Always thought it was the strongest of the V8's they had at the time. And that was followed by the ENDT 1000 which was later renamed the E9.

Single To Tandem
ThaddeusW replied to M54A1's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
One piece of advice don't weld a section between the existing frame rails and the cut off frame rails, even if the rail sizes match. Depending on the frame material welding it will make it soft and prone to failure. Better get smaller length of "C" channel and butt the two frame sections together and then bolt the smaller inner C rail across the two to make a strong joint. If you can weld cut both frames at an angle so the weld goes at a 45 degree angle instead of up and down. this gives a stronger weld as there is a longer weld and will help prevent stress cracking. -
In the 70's the V8's availiable were the ENDT865 and ENDT866. The 865 was rated to 325HP and the 866 was rated to 375HP. As for torque I would guesstimate that the 865 had around 1100 foot pounds and the 866 had around 1300 perhaps? They would be hooked to either 5 ot 6 speeds.

Ok so I separated the transmission and removed the clutch. Apparently Mice made a nice cozy home in the bell housing, had to clean it out. There is 5/32" of lining left on the clutch plate so I don't know how much wear there is. Where do you find a replacement clutch if necessary? Also the flywheel has allot of small cracks in the face not deep but there are allot of them and the all seem to point/run inward toward the center. No cracks on the pressure plate though. Although there is bluing on some parts of the pressure plate face. Looks like the cracks are from thermal stress or creep. I just hope it wont lead to failure in the form of an exploding flywheel. You can see them better in negative:

How about putting it in gear and have someone push or pull while you observe the engine for TDC.
-
Thanks Trent. It looks like I might even need new injector lines too. Anyone know if there are any after market replacements? They look simple enough to make except for the coupling on the end. I would love to make my own out of stainless steel, never worry about rust again. The fuel return line from the injectors cracked as I was loosening its connection to the tee fitting on the injection pump . Thankfully that line can be easily replaced with a piece of tubing of the same diameter. Oh does anyone know the injection pressure?

Thanks Herb.
