Wasnt the reason for the switch to dana/eaton/fuller/spicer components is because they were lighter and cheaper then the Mack components? Since the carriers wanted to maximise on the payload weight, they went to the non Mack driveline.

1979 F Model
ThaddeusW replied to supercabs's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Your darn right! I love the F's and have seen that one a while back. There are two nice F's on American trucker that aren't restored. I would like to get the both of them but 1. I have no real room for em and 2. how the heck do I get them without spending as much as I paid for them. Oh well. I would love to find a V8 powered F. Nice long wheel base: http://www.trucker.com/inventory/specsheet.asp?ID=1583114 Headache rack included and a longish wheel base. http://www.trucker.com/inventory/specsheet.asp?ID=1827694 -
Soon to be relabeld MACK and put into some CL replacement. Lets see what is to come.

This one was for sale on the truckhub site. Odd looking cross between an ML and an F model. Called an MIR.

Wow thats one sh---y mess. We bought a house 5 years ago that had a septic system and we knew nothing about how to maintian them. Well one day I noticed water coming out a hole next to the house and realised it was the overflow pipe... ugh. Called the septic guys and they sent a truck (Mack of course). Driver was a real hoot and was nice enough to tell us all the tips and tricks on proper ceptic care and even joked where the waste went..Evian !

Hmmm ok so the 865's had 5 speeds then. LOL no wonder why im trying to get every scrap of mack info on wikipedia to end all this confusion . I have seen an dolder B model with a V8 and quad box. maybe it was repowered but man do I ever get confused with what engine could be paired with which transmission in which truck. Argh..... I will make a post later asking for engine and trans info. -
Impressive F Model

I think You are right that the second axle isnt driven. I thought that it could have been a step but the hub looks different unless its just the picture. I have never seen that grille on anything but those all wheel drive trucks so far and they are either down under or in Kiwi. Oh and here is another question, I saw an F model a while back on truck paper with a Cummins 903 in it. What transmission would it have had? All the Mack V8's came with the two stick transmissions correct? Werk I didnt know you joined BMT, good to see you here. -

Just a thought: If you think about it if there is play in the shaft it will be more pronounced during idle in neutral. When things get hot they expand and your poor adjustment will go out even more as it expands. Also when in gear the forces against the shaft wont allow it to rattle all over. It might move around but not rattle as the friction between the gears will hold the shaft steady. Thats why its mighty difficult to pull a gear out when your foots on the go pedal.

I like the grille on the Austrailian superliner but the raised cab is too much. Leave the cab at its regular height and square off the hood with the same grille as the Aussie superliner. The titan is overly tall for a reason and man is it cool looking. -
I found this picture in my Science encyclopedia (had them since I was a kid) under the truck article. It has a grille that I have only seen on heavy duty F models in New Zealand with all wheel drive. The different front hubs indicate to me the second steer axle is driven. The rears are tandem drive with a lift axle in front. What model numbers/letters of the F mode were all wheel drive? Were these all wheel models available in North America? This has to be the most awesome looking F model I have ever seen! More of the same type of F model: Man they look damn good.

Thats a hydraulic full widening steerable low loader. The trailer can go from 8 or 10 feet to 14 or 16 feet wide. Perfect for hauling excavators loaders or off highway trucks or anything else wide and heavy. Here is a link to an Australian trailer manufacturer that makes them: http://www.draketrailers.com/range/range.htm If you also look the Titan has the Renault planetary hub reduction axles. Any why on earth would you say the titan is ugly? Its the best damn thing Mack has as of now. They have the big beautiful titan and we have a fancy CH called the raw hide, big whoop. Last good looking mack to grace the streets of the USA was the Superliner. -
Need Detaied R Model Info
ThaddeusW replied to ThaddeusW's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Hmm I thought that RL was for light weight. The frame could be steel or aluminum but the cab/hood had lightweight components to shave weight off. I thought the suffix S or L (ex. RL700L) was the frame material. RS is still a mysterty to me. R700's were long hood R but not western RS or RL. Can someone clear this one up for me? I know this was mentioned before but I want to double check before I make an entry. Ok I also need to know more about the frame rail option numbers. so if 6xx is 1/4 and 7xx is 3/8 frame what did 4xx and 8xx mean? I have seen an RD888SX with 110K rears and an I beam frame. How did you know if you had a single or double frame? Did the X mean double frame or extra duty? -
Is this the inner-city duty model?

OK I need some basic Info for the R series. I am looking for a bit of history along with model number info. So far i know the R started production in 1964/65 RD - What does the D mean RM - What does the M mean and they appear to be rare RL - Lightweight western R with Aluminum doors and grille- please add if i missed anything RS - Im guessing the S means steel butterfly hood? RW - Superliner but what does the W mean? RB - Axle back (except in NZ where it was a CH looking superliner hood with an R cab.) RU - U model (light weight DM)? Any other prefixes I might have missed? Ok now for the numbering. What did the first of the three numbers mean? 4xx 6xx 7xx - long hood 8xx - Also I see that only 4 R863R's were produced. Were these 4 R's succeeded by the RD8xx series? The second two are the engine code correct? If so can someone give me a detailed list of all the engine codes? Now the only two suffix letters I know are R and L. R is a steel frame and L is an aluminum frame. Any more please let me know! I will be asking more question as time goes by to get this project going.

New Mack Acquistion:
ThaddeusW replied to Rob's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Yes. The CAT brake saver was a hydraulic retarder integrated into the engine. It was popular in the 3406's and 3408's and can be paired with a jake brake to get upwards of 750hp of braking HP. The brake saver gives you something like 150-175 brake HP. -
Barry excellent idea. Hopefully we get so much information up that my head will explode after we (all of us!) are done Oh and this is something everyone can use: Mack_Model_Production.pdf Its a PDF of a list of production numbers for each mack model! everything from the very early years to quite recently is there. If you have trouble with the pdf put up a post and I can save it in another format.

With so many Question asked about particular models I thought it would be wise to start a wikipedia mack truck information tree. The main article about mack trucks is a bad place to start as it is an article about the company itself and its history (plus its also tied to the Allentown wiki and subject to zealous editing, they took out the BMT link). I think it would be nice to start a new article with a rundown of all models. a/b/c/r/d/c even old rail stuff etc... Then each model can have its own page listing variations and possible engines/components offered. This way we can setup a whole knowledge base for all things mack. The thing is wikipedia is subject to edit by anyone and frequently random editors will edit articles to fit a particular view or wikipedia policy. I am going to start some basic pages and hopefully we can expand from there. If anyone is interested in joining in its easy make an account for free and then edit away but i ask you read up on wikipeda policy a bit. Also articles must remain neutral so stuff like best truck ever made best engine best this and that has to be omitted or it will be edited and possibly a neutrality dispute tag put up. No opinions only facts! If you look under the edit box there is a line to enter a comment, please do so and say what you did and why if necessary. Wikipedia isn't a picture post either so go easy on the image posting stay relevant and have good clear shots of the truck. Make sure all your images have copyright information or if you took them label them as such. I am going to start a page called List of Mack Truck products. It will contain a rundown of all models and a breif summary. From there we can link to an article dedicated to that particular model line. We will start with a list off all model ranges then create an article dedicated to that model range not a particular model. for example the article on B models should encompass all B models with history and a breakdown of the different model numbering and some pictures. Model number breakdown should be setup so anyone with a B model can figure out what they have and what was offered. Also any relevant links to B models can be put at the end (like BMT!). This is a great opportunity to create a mack truck information pool for the world to see. Some quick examples of pages I started (please add to or correct them!): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mack_superliner http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mack_Titan Maybe I am crazy but after reading a few posts asking about engines, model numbers and always having question on my mind it came to me as an idea to use wikipedia for our benefit. Also preserves the history. I hope as many of you as possible can help out as I know a few of you have tons of knowledge waiting to be organized for all to see. If anyone here wants to contribute but isn't up to the task of fooling with the wiki code drop me a PM and ill get it posted up.

Ah the thing is the turbo motors have an oiling setup that sprays oil on the cylinder walls. without that setup the motor will burn out with the turbo. Is the old turbo motor blown or damaged beyond repair? if not it should bolt right up. Others here will know allot more.

I saw this posted on hanks site by a fellow in Israel. I don't ever recall there being a set back axle F700 then again I have seen an SBA MH in Australia. Oh and the headlights are in the bumper because of Israeli law to keep the light from blinding other vehicles.

Strong Or Not
ThaddeusW replied to dieselsmoke's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
I can say that IH is better then Freightliner. I have only experience with the Class 7 delivery trucks but the IH have more polish to them and the DT/HT engines have been knows to get almost a million miles before an inframe.
