Get A Load Of This....
ThaddeusW replied to ThaddeusW's topic in Modern Mack Truck General Discussion
Its interesting to see what happens with the MR and the LE. Its so common for refuse here in NY its like its manditory to have Macks . Only seen one Peterbilt 320, western star packer, IH 7600, even saw a Scania once. Every Truck for Bartlett Dairy distributors is an MR, they won't use anything else for their tandem delivery trucks. Every NYC Sanitation truck is Mack (MR, LE, RD) save for the few Crane Carries that might be around still. Just about every private carting comapny uses Mack MR's and some DM & R models. Its ALL MACK here. If mack discontinues those models it will piss allot of people off! Since volvo sold off the Autocar Expiditor mish mash they dont have and Low entry cabovers. Maybe they are still working on the MP7 models? I like the Volvo cab, the VH is a good looking truck. I just hope Mack uses the cab shell and nothing else. -
Well over on Hanks site someone just posted this picture. Now we know what a Mack with a Volvo cab will look like. Its used for a truck pull and is custom made not an official Mack prototype or anything. Eh not that bad but still they better not put that awful Volvo dash in there.
-
God please tell me they won't use that damn ugly Volvo dash. Yay . I have said it before and I will say it again. I like the styling of the Volvo cab BUT it doesent belong on a Mack. It reminds me of what happend to Hayes and Brockway after Mack bought them. Its like its payback or something Hopefully the mutilation stops after that but again wishful thinking.

I dont hate them for being Volvo or hate Volvo trucks (I like their cabovers). Its like HK said, they aquired allot of big names and eviscerated them until they either no longer existed or reduced them to a shell of their former self (Autocar). As far as I can tell Mack will be around for quite a while. But what happens when Volvo decides its cheaper to have Mack discontinue there drive line components or suspensions? You hear that the Volvo T-Ride suspension is now offerd by Mack for refuse applications? Not a bad thing but what happens when some Volvo bean counter says heck with camelback when we can just substitute it with M-ride. Then the next thing you know their transmissions get substituted with Volvo trannys. Then what is Mack...answer a Volvo with a dog on the hood. Dont think it will happen? Guess again, its happening already. Its only a matter of time. I could be very wrong but look at history, it tends to repeat itself. I just hope I am wrong.

Dear Volvo Get lost. Love, Loyal Mack Fans Navistar is the last independent Truck mfg here in the USA. All they make is trucks and like I have said before would have been better off if they could have purchased Mack (maybe even Renault). Leave them alone! Leave Oshkosh alone as well. Pedal your cheap crap somewhere else like India or China. I got an idea use some of the money in your deep pockets and give us back the Superliner. Oh and thanks for disembowling Autocar leaving them to sell rebadged White Expiditors. GET LOST YOU GREEDY BA#*$%DS! Rant over

Thats a good point about the cables but the cables would burn up, not the starter because it would just get a lower voltage. Was the starter you put in new, rebuilt or used? I think its just not strong enough for the task. Those starters are series wound so they draw as much current as needed. A smaller starter will draw more current then its rated for which would lead to overheating and then buring out the windings after a while. Did you change the start system to 12v too? I know it sounds stupid but its worth asking. Although I doubt a 12V could take that many starts before burning up on 24v.
-
could be that the 24v starter was either more powerful or better built for cranking an E9. Air starters seem to be lower maintenence and more reliable.

Great stuff barry! But once you click on the image you want you dont have to enlarge it with that little box in the corner. Thats just to make the picture fit in your browser window, it doesent resize it.

Volvo up and bought out the both of them in 2001. And my mistake they fully bought out Mack in 1990, started with a 10% share in 1979 and then to 20% 1982. Good link with a time line: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mack_Trucks

Chris, Renault began to aquire Mack around 78 or 79. They fully bought out mack in 82 or so. They used mack engines in there trucks most notibly the E9 in the Magnum. Mack imported the midliner and more recently the midlum (marketed as the freedom). They seem very reliable because I still see quite a few 80's models still running around with no problems. And to be truthful the newer Renault cabs are damn good looking. Heck I love the Australian Quantum . At least they didnt butcher Mack like friggen Volvo is doing.

LOL you can say the tarp is the "retractable roof". -
Top right is an L model. The others are B 80's I think, if not I need to be educated

Guys such great info! My plans as of now is to get into Local 3, the electricians union. Then maybe buy an old dog to play around with . I ask about trucks because man they are a ball to drive. My friend who loves to race around like a clown in his car doesent understand whats so great about plotsing along getting the crap beaten outta you in a truck . bulldog man I know the feeling. My father had a severe stroke in 94 that left him near brain dead, he passed away in 2003. both my grandfathers are gone also so I am the oldest one left so to speak (the rest of the family either does their own thing or lives half way across the country). Its tough for me and my mother to give the business up. When we sold the machine shop portion I cried like a little girl when they were loading the machines onto the trucks (still have my grandfathers machines though). Hard to give it up when so much blood sweat and tears went into it. I wish you luck getting back into the business! Green Dash I knew it when I saw your pics of the black Mack you drive I saw on Hanks site. I also found out when the Boll Weevil from BMT said he was from GA. EmpireStateDog No offence taken, in fact you made me laugh!

If I was going into trucking I would buy a used dog. It sounds like the best investment as you can get a decent running truck for under 15 grand and put it strait to work. Lets say I do decide to get into trucking, my initial investment will be low and if it doesent work out I dont have to worry about 200k worth of truck payments. Just sell the old girl and move on.

Well like I said Im looking for options and I appreciate all of your input so far. I wont be burning down any bridges as not only am I tired but my mother too. I hear you can get upwards of 40+ bucks an hour as an electrician. Now I also herd you could make as much or more with a truck and thats why I asked. Keep the information coming. i live in the communist republic of N.Y.State. It might be better where you live. ESD I live in NY city .

95 here in New York City with a 103 heat index. Man I love it when its 65-70 with a nice breeze.

Well I really need to ask this question. I am at a point in my life where the family business is starting to both drive me crazy and bore me. It has its moments but I would rather do something else. I have three options so far; go back to college, become an electrician or something in the trucking industry. I went to college for Electrical engineering which I liked but the more I thought about it the more I started to reconsider a white collar sit in a cubical job. I really don't want to go back to college at this point. I went to Thomas A. Edison high school where I took electric shop because I always like electric/electronics since I was a baby. I learned allot there and can almost consider myself an electrician but without a license and thorough code knowledge. I even do jobs on the side every now and then. Now I ask how do you make money because I have never been around trucks at all. I would like to know how some people buy a dump truck or tractor and go to work. How do you hire yourself out, how do you get work? I like vocational work not over the road stuff.. I would rather play in the dirt or haul equipment on a lowboy, roll off, crane truck stuff like that. I have wanted to ask this question for some time but it just seemed silly. Now after a few rough weeks and just hitting a slump in life I need to do something fresh and new. I need another option.

What is the difference between the U and DM models?

Mack Truck Information
ThaddeusW replied to thanakayoumack's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Nice truck you have there. Its a long hood R model the precursor to the superliner. As far as decoding the VIN dont bother all you need to find is the rear/front axle capacity along with the engine and transmission info. The engine should have a name plate on it and the tranny as well You could even go by the shift plate in the cab to see the model). The axles have numbers on them that someone here will have a better idea where to find them and how to read them. Other then that just describe the condition miles and condition of brakes and tires. BTW, where are you located and what might you be asking for it. Some pictures would be great too. -
I saw this truck on ebay just today and was wondering if that is a cat engine and what is the general consensus about aluminum frames? I herd the aluminum frames are prone to bad rot. Can the truck be re railed with a steel frame? what about the rears, they look to be either 38 or 40's. Can a 44/46 rear easily be swapped under there (im thinking I would need a new set of springs and possibly a trunnion)? Also I always get confused with the RS/RL 700 models. The RL had an aluminum frame and the RS has a steel frame right? and the L at the end of the 700 means a light weight setup with aluminum cab parts like the doors right? Thanks!
