  1. Mack to Consolidate U.S. Production in Macungie, PA, Assembly LEHIGH VALLEY, PA (June 25, 2009) – Mack Trucks, Inc. today announced that the company will move forward with its previously announced plan to consolidate production of its entire product line at its assembly facility in Macungie, PA. The plan involves transferring assembly of Mack highway vehicles from the plant in Virginia’s New River Valley to Macungie, where Mack’s construction and refuse trucks are assembled, to take advantage of efficiencies arising from consolidated assembly, and to create a brand-unique environment for Mack customers. The company expects to begin the transfer in September 2009 and complete it by the end of November 2009, during which period there will be a gradual production ramp-down in NRV and a corresponding ramp-up in Macungie. Due to the prevailing market conditions, the company expects that rather than adding personnel in Macungie, it will instead support the increased production by reducing the number of down weeks. The transfer is expected to result in an employment reduction at the NRV plant, which will continue to produce Volvo Trucks North America’s entire product range, but it is too early to quantify the impact.
  2. As a current Mack employee I don't see how karma affects me. I was not even born when the last Brockway was built. It comes down to the guy up stairs or across the ocean making a decision to move or get rid of jobs. The average engineer, tech, or secretary is in no control of what some executive decides. A few people a responsible for decisions that effect thousands. The last Brockway employee that I know of is retiring at the end of June.
  3. Mack Delivers Hybrid Refuse Truck to New York City NEW YORK, NY (May 28, 2009) – During an event in Flushing Meadows Corona Park today, Mack Trucks, Inc. was recognized for delivering a diesel-electric hybrid MACK® TerraPro™ Low Entry model refuse truck to the city of New York. It is the first production intent parallel diesel-electric hybrid truck in the U.S. designed specifically for Class 8 heavy-duty applications and meeting the EPA’10 emission regulations. Mack officials said it was an important milestone in the company’s hybrid commercialization process. Regarding the truck to be evaluated in everyday operations by the city’s Department of Sanitation, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said, “We are very proud to be the first city in the country with a Mack truck of this type. We all want clean neighborhoods, clean air, a clean environment. And clean trucks like this are essential in delivering on that promise.” The TerraPro hybrid has a rear loading refuse packer body. It is equipped with a 325 hp MACK MP7 engine and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) exhaust aftertreatment technology, the approach that Mack is utilizing to meet U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s near-zero emissions standards for 2010. The Mack diesel-electric hybrid powertrain used in the truck features an integrated starter, alternator and electric motor. The system captures energy from braking, converts the energy to electricity, stores the electricity in lithium ion batteries, and uses it to power the electric motor, which assists the MP7 diesel engine with propulsion of the truck. This technology provides the maximum fuel savings and environmental benefits on routes with frequent braking and accelerations, making refuse collection an ideal application. Use of this hybrid system, when fully optimized, is expected to improve fuel economy by up to 30%, with a corresponding greenhouse gas emissions benefit. The EPA’10 regulations going into effect January 1st mark the third set of emissions standards for the trucking industry since 2002- all requiring significant investments in new products and technologies. In 2007, heavy-duty manufacturers like Mack incorporated Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) into their trucks to all but eliminate particulate matter (PM) emissions. The EPA’10 requirements call for emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) to be reduced by more than 80 percent starting January 1st, down to levels so minute they’re a challenge to even measure. SCR accomplishes the necessary NOx reduction via a catalytic reaction in the exhaust stream- and at the same time enhances fuel economy. The SCR-DPF combination means trucks like the Mack TerraPro delivered to New York are the cleanest in the world, even before the incorporation of hybrid technology. “The delivery of this truck marks a key milestone in a long-standing, successful partnership,” said Dennis R. Slagle, Mack president and CEO. “The Mack-New York City connection goes back more than 100 years. The Mack brothers built their first buses and trucks in Brooklyn. And in so many ways, we share a common heritage- tough, hard working, reliable. We’re also both committed to a clean environment. By burning up to 30% less fuel and emitting significantly less CO2, Mack diesel-electric hybrid trucks can have a great impact on the quality of the air we breathe. We’re also proud to be the first manufacturer to provide the city with a heavy-duty hybrid truck fully compliant with the EPA 2010 emissions regulations.” “We ask a lot of the trucks in our operations, and Mack has always provided us with products that stand up to the rigors of what we put them through,” said John J. Doherty, Commissioner of the city’s Department of Sanitation. “We look forward to putting this hybrid through its paces as well- cleaning up the city while at the same time cleaning the air.”

  9. Do you have LED lights? Are you lights on all the time (don't flash)? LED's do not create enough load for the standard flasher. It you use a 3 pin flasher with a ground LED's will work. Whats your VIN number?

  12. The Mack web site has been updated.
  13. "i would go out of business before going to volvo " You may feel this way but the executives at Volvo don't hear it or don't care. I work for the company and feel I'm pretty outspoken about my feelings. There is a line I can't cross because I still need this job (until they move). Tell the company how you feel as customers. (although it's probably to late) "The customer is the foundation of the business" It's on the back of all Mack business cards. There is now way Mack will be the same in Greensboro. I'm in the middle a fighting a design change that Volvo has engineered on the Mack's. None of the Mack engineers feel it is the right solution for our Mack Trucks. Mack had this design ten years ago and went away from it. So far we have been told Volvo has done it for years so its going on 2010 trucks. I feel passionate about the company I work for. I have pride in the Mack brand. That is something that does not exists in Volvo.

  18. 10 To Watch: Dennis ‘Denny’ Slagle: King of the road So this article was in a Greensboro paper but not in Allentown's. No way 40-50% of the employees are moving to Greensboro. My estimate is 5-10%. It's all BS Volvo spin.
  19. I don't think a Volvo would last as long as that old R Model.
  20. MAN acquires VW's Brazilian truck and bus operations. MAN AG is to acquire VW Truck & Bus, which is based in Resende (Brazil), from Volkswagen AG. The company with an enterprise value of €1,175 million ($1.58 billion) is set to be transferred on January 1, 2009. The executive bodies of MAN and VW have already granted their approval. Volkswagen Truck & Bus has been producing trucks and buses in Resende since 1996. The company is Brazil’s largest truck manufacturer and leads the market for trucks with a gross vehicle weight of more than five tons. The vehicles are primarily sold in Latin America and South Africa. Around 47,000 trucks and buses were supplied in 2007. The company has a comprehensive sales and service network in Brazil and neighboring countries. Around 5,000 employees work at the Resende plant – one of the most modern truck production facilities – for VW Truck & Bus and its partner suppliers. Acquiring the Brazilian company and its strong brand enables MAN to expand into the South American market, one of the fastest-growing regions, thus consistently strengthening its commercial vehicles business. VW is the biggest shareholder in both MAN and Sweden's Scania. VW has 68.6 percent of Scania's votes, while MAN has 17.2 percent. MAN news release, 2008-12-15 Carlos Pacheco comments--this will give MAN access to emerging markets such as Latin America, Africa, Asia and M East. MAN and VW products practically do not compete once VW trucks and buses focuses on the low cost range of products. This will also provide MAN with a complete product range from Class 3 thru Class 8. A European credit analyst quoted by Reuters "thinks that this transaction is the next step in the formation of the Porsche-VW-Scania-MAN group." The world continues to get more interdependent.
