  5. A set of 4.17 ratios (common in maxidyne 5 speed trucks) will give you 65MPH on like 10r20s or 11r22.5 But now you have to think if first is low enough.
  6. If that and the 5.73 are correct you are going to end up with 392 RPM at the wheel. Depending on tire size probably a few MPH +/- of 40 A "10R20" tire typically has around 497 revolutions per mile.

  8. Looks like they are making nice dump trailer suspensions in China. I wonder how much with everything paid and delivered to my shop
  9. You'll never get the stability and articulation from an an air ride that you can get out of a single point suspension like a Mack camelback or a Hendrickson. Same goes with the dump trailers. Everyone who works in a rough environment wants a Hutchens, or Neway single point. A bit of a rough ride beats the hell out of a dump laying on it's side
  10. Depending on what the trans is, he might want to just change the whole cutoff. If that truck had a direct trans in it 5.73 isn't going to give much road speed. It could top out at around 40
  11. 1000 per wheel is insane. You could buy a whole cuttoff with cam brakes for less than half that. I guess to make it period correct, you'd have to use the narrow brakes with the bolt on lining. Those narrow shoes with the drums, spiders, ect is the kind of stuff that hits the scrap when you're cutting up trucks
  12. Every wedge brake tractor I converted to cams the first time anything went wrong with them. And we had a lot of ex Matlack and Chemical Leaman trucks
  13. We could go right to this lol. But after haveing run an Autocar 9964 with the RS (Rubber Pads) and replacing the tail light bulbs every time I bobtailed more than about 20 miles, I'd say it'd be a little too rough. I used to pull a Rodgers RGN that had those walking beams that had the axles cut in the middle, and between that and the RS Hendrickson under the tractor I started to understand why women wear sports bras
  14. We were getting a lot of imported aftermarket camelback springs in the 80's and 90's. I saw trucks with 2 supposedly matched brand new springs have a 2 inch difference from side to side. How they wore tires I really don't know, mostly all dumps, mixers, roll offs, working in the city. Most tires got destroyed before they wore out. I hauled scrap metal for years, I spent lots more on tires than fuel lol. I was seriously considering foam fills for the dump trailers
  15. Helps to know some basic trig like the Pythagorean Theorem, or as carpenters call it "The 3 4 5 Rule"
  16. The spec for the mack camelback used to be 3/8 difference from side to side measured at the axle centers If you drill the frame wrong and screw up the thrust angle, well you should have measured or 2 or 10 times before drilling
  17. This isn't even that good of price for older 44s with the cones There are plenty out there. all kinds of hubs, ratios, flat flange axles

I'm just saying that when there are cutoffs in nice shape in the 2 to 5 thousand dollar range depending on what you want, I'm not going out and buying a new suspension and converting the axle housings by cutting off old brackets and welding on new ones. Sounds like a lot more work and a lot more money to me for very little if any gain
  19. I've never converted axle housings. I've always bought used cutoffs and just swapped the whole thing
  20. Actually what we should be asking is what kind of work does this truck do? How is it speced out?
