Sorry for the late update it’s Ben a busy week or so. ended up taken both turbos to the turbo shop, we messed with them on the counter for a bit pulled some measurements, and got the answer of it would probably work but not recommended so I hopped on the ole Interwebs and got a 3.5” to 4” boot, a 20 degree aluminum 4” pipe, and a new section of 4” boot. Pictured belowalso went to the local hydraulic line shop and came up with an oil feed line. Not a big fan of it gonna redo it when I get time. anyway pre oiled the turbo, let it run for awhile cause the turbo sat on a shelf for a few years. Took it on the first drive after awhile of idling and retorquing bolts. drives better then it ever has, spools up a tad bit faster and seems like it pulls good. Haven’t put a load behind it to see what it does but definitely seems a lot better.

I understand that. I might just take them to the local turbo shop to get there opinion

So the old housing on the new center section spins just fine. out of curiosity I put the new housing on the old center section and it hits the fins on the inside almost seats all the way it’s probably just a few thousands that hits. my thought process was if they both spin freely with swapped housings then I’m good.

volute? I thought that was the exhaust housing in the picture? Sorry if I misunderstood. I’m not an expert by any means i definitely am a backyard mechanic learning as I go lol. So I swapped the compressor housing the old one fits on the new one just fine spins freely out of curiosity I put the new on on the old turbo and it won’t spin? Should I put it back to how it was and just get myself the right fittings for the intake?

Okay so not 100 percent sure what the numbers mean on the inside. I measured the id of both on both and they came out near the same, old one being a tad bigger just cause the casting is shot in between them. I measured quite a few different things and there all basically the same size the only difference I found was the Id of the inlet on the new one was 3” and the old one 2.9” checked with a caliper. Think it’s safe to swap housings on the compressor side? Should I pull them off and measure the fin before swapping?

Haven’t taken the old on off yet to know for sure digging into it right now Attached photos of the old vs new. News on the bench. Gonna pull it off and see if the volute is the same size. Looks really similar in pictures and in person

Yes it does fit under the hood. Sorry got busy and haven’t had time to mess with it much more or take pictures. But I looked at it a little more last night and I’m wondering if the compressor housing would swap over so I wouldn’t have to rig something new together.

well ended up just biting the bullet and buying it. It was a good deal. It is a little bit different on the intake housing has like a 45 degree bend to it. I’ll take some pictures tomorrow. And the oil feed line is different. Shouldn’t be to hard to to make work tho

Hi all had a question I’m struggling to find an answer for. got a 95 rd688s e7 400 Mack, just got done redoing the exhaust cause it rotted away. fired up to check for leaks and I noticed a puff of smoke from under the hood. Had the ole man shut it off and restart and noticed the exhaust housing on the turbo was cracked, almost all the way around the edge of the clamp for the center section. Sorry for the lengthy backstory. Anyway on to my question. got on market place found a s400 turbo rebuilt from a ch model Mack at the local turbo shop for 500 bucks kinda hard to pass up with all the gaskets. But I’ve Ben getting conflicting info on part numbers and from people saying the 400 e7 had a s300 turbo and the “bigger” motors had s400 but some 400 Mack’s had the s400 if it is for the “bigger” motor would I be able to run it with out pump work or injector work and just watch the pyro or? any help or knowledge would be greatly appreciated! Thank you. Not trying to go spend 1400 at Mack for a “new” turbo picture of the new heat shield and stack top after a little spit shine.
