Venezuela Macks
burnstransport replied to russoniellov's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Holy cow, "ANCHA LARGA" is right!!! Sure is nice to see that not all of the Macks that take a long boat ride to the far corners get neglected, some of them look pretty well loved and cared for in these pics! -
That Volvo rollback is kinda neat looking, how hard is it to get parts for them? As was mentioned earlier they seem to be extinct now and I wonder if parts availability (or lack thereof) helped to weed them out of the used market. I know about 7 years ago I towed one to the local junkyard that needed a ton of work, it was an oil tanker so the repair estimate must have been pretty high to let it go to the scrapper for the cost of a tow (this was when iron was still a depressed market).

Beautiful pictures, thank you for sharing with us! -
I gotta admit it's pretty bad when Leno can call out the Prez . . . normally he's in the bag for the libs .. . . . .

Double check with the licensing bureau before you take the test in the L9000, years ago they used to give out a CDL - A with an "O" restriction (fifth-wheel) which meant you could drive any size truck with any size TAG trailer, but NOT a fifth wheel (tractor - trailer). That may have changed in the last few years but better ask first. Otherwise you'll have to take the test all over again when you want to move up to an t/t license. If I were you I'd get some practice in the 9-car hauler then take that. Just remember that you have an advantage of being able to see "through" the trailer to some extent, as opposed to a dry van trailer, during the cone course. You might have to spend some extra practice time but I recommend it if you can, over the dump / tag combination. I truly regret that in 8 years I have yet to find both a tractor / trailer and the time to acquire my "A" license but maybe someday . . . . so if you can do it NOW then trust me you will never regret it! These licenses are only going to get harder and harder to get as time goes on.

I was fortunate enough to have a friend who was willing to take me for my CDL-B, I ended up buying an old IH Fleetstar 6-wheel ramp truck from him with 33,000 lb GVW so I needed the license. If you are mechanically inclined the pre trip is pretty easy to master, that usually impresses the inspector right off the bat. The cone course is the hardest part. Once you can pass that stage the road trip is really a formality, they're mostly looking for how comfortable you are at handling the truck. Also, I rented a box truck from Ryder, they were the only company willing to rent an air brake truck for a CDL-B test. I inquired about renting a tractor trailer to take the A test but that involved signing a lease so it was a pretty involved proposition. They will double-check the truck to make sure it passes the pre trip, if it fails they'll fix it on their dime and give you a voucher for another day of rental. It's cheap insurance vs. bringing your own truck and being put out of service. Also, their trucks have synchronized transmissions. Make sure to still double clutch, the inspector will watch for that. But really you're just going through the motions. Best of luck, seems like from what I hear it's harder and harder to get every year.

how do you replace center bearing?
burnstransport replied to macattack's topic in Driveline and Suspension
Well 1/4" play is not usually excessive. Why were you checking the bearing, is there an unusual vibration in the running gear? The U-Joints typically wear out first causing some harmonic vibrations, when the center bearing goes it's usually a catastrophic failure causing the truck to rattle your teeth out, accompanied by a burning rubber smell. . . . . just my $0.02 but if you're chasing a slight vibration start with U-joints, followed by trans output bearing and pinion input bearing. Even a tire vibration can feel like driveline rumble, be sure to take that out of the equation before assuming your center support bearing is bad. If it does turn out to be bad, installation of the new one typically requires pulling the driveshaft and bringing it to the driveshaft shop for press fit, otherwise it will be no better than the bad one you replaced. That's the only way I've seen it performed successfully. -

That is one "lucky" F model! -
That is one loud collection right there! As I've heard some of the ol-timers say about the Detroit's, "If they ain't leakin', they ain't runnin!!!"

Duel headlights on R model
burnstransport replied to staxx's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Here's a pic from the Barrington 2012 show of an R600 fire apparatus, the quad lights do look somewhat custom, I wonder if the body builder was installing them as their "trade mark". These ones I took as factory given the aluminum surround, but after reading the above posts and looking at the style of turn signal light I'm thinking that they were installed after the fact. Probably the apparatus builder?? What do you fire truck experts think? -
Radio in 2013 Pinnacle
burnstransport replied to upsman's topic in Modern Mack Truck General Discussion
Check the antenna connection on the back of the radio. The new shaker I drive daily picked up so much electrical interference on AM that you couldn't hear the programming half the time, I finally pulled out the radio, unplugged the antenna (which felt tight) plugged it back in and it was like night and day! It may have wiggled loose, preventing the antenna from getting a good ground which dissipates the stray noise interference. Easy fix and worth trying. -
That setup never needs batteries or calibrating . . . . and you can toss it around as rough as you like
-
That says it all right there, especially that CNN refused to run the ads!

I try to split my time in the truck between music on the FM dial in the morning, then the AM dial for Rush and a local talk show in the afternoon, it's the only place I've heard about this movie and it sounds like a must - see!!! I guess I take for granted how much truth I'm exposed to listening to so much AM radio because whenever I talk to any friends about what's going on they never seem to have heard about anything I know about . . . . . VERY SCARY to say the least

The Backhoes Here!
burnstransport replied to umodelnut's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
When I was a kid my dad would bring home the backhoe brochures for the new John Deere's with the "new" foot swing, his old Ford 4500 had old -fashioned "four lever" controls so the foot pedal fascinated me . . . . . of course I was only about 5 at the time lol Looks like an "extend-a-hoe", that's handier than sliced bread for a job like putting a cab on!! Have fun! Truck is looking great! -
Have you changed the gear oil lately? If not, drain it out and look for any shavings stuck to the magnetic plug. As was said above you probably have a worn bearing, but it's worth taking a look at the old oil to help you discover what your problem could be. Small metal shavings could indicate a bearing, large metal chunks could indicate a bearing or worse yet a broken gear tooth, but the noise sounds more like bearings. Sometimes if the oil is past it's useful service life the trans will whine at top gear. If there's no abnormal metal (anything larger than a fine powder) on the drain plug you might try fresh gear oil, cheaper than an overhaul. Just never know, it might work . . . . .(but it's a big might)

You could run the cable through a snatch block then re-attach to the boom head if you were to weld a D-ring up there. I've heard of guys running a single line that way back in the old days because the tow bar would pivot better off the one line rather than two during tight turns. Best of luck with it, I'm sure you'll have plenty of fun with it! Love the twin stacks!

Wow what a find! I'll take a complete, worn out looking original shape old truck over a freshly painted one any day! Nothing against the guys that do the hard work to restore one to it's former glory, I know first hand how hard it is but to find a faded paint barn stored find like these is to me just absolutely priceless!!! Thank you for sharing!

Great pics! Like the Oakland, MD pic . . . . . is 34 too young to be a "dirty old man"?
