  1. Nice work Mackmann, that is a fine looking piece of machinery. I work hard at keeping my old girl ('89 R model) as nice as I can .....that truck not only represents me, but my wife - whose name is on the front, and the family I work for - whose name is on the side....and I believe it is my responsibility to represent all of us as best I can. Keep up the good work, Rick
  2. Hey all, I run a '89 R688S, 350/12 tri-axle dump hauling mix here in the northeast. I spend a LOT of time back and forth on the highways and my right leg is constantly jammed up against the heat/ac box - and I've had about enough of that. I just recieved the King Cruise unit and it appears to be a stout and well made, will install it after the injector pump is rebuilt next week. Curious if anyone has any experience with these units in general or in applications similar to mine. Thanks, Rick
  3. thanks

  5. Well, I think I have this as figured out as I'm going to. My solution has been to split 4L / 4H and 5L / 5H in neutral, pop it into neutral and split up, then slide it back into gear. Not perfect, but better. Thanks Rick
  6. Hi all, not sure if this is the right forum, but here goes.... I'm looking for one of those shift lever extensions that are formed sort of like a convoluted Y, threads on to the shift lever where the original knob or splitter was and relocates the splitter to one leg of the Y and has the knob on the other leg of the Y. You have the knob in your hand and select ranges with your thumb and forefinger. I had one of these on a 13 speed and I'd like to try it with the 12 speed I'm running now. After reading this I realise this is a horrible description but I am hoping someone will know what I'm talking about and/or where I might get my hands on one. Thanks Rick
  7. Thanks Rob and GG2-its for sure the govenor. Now all we have to do is scrape up the 2K to get it rebuilt. Thanks, Rick
  8. Hello all, Paving season has begun here in the northeast and I have been running an 86 RD688S triaxle for the past month or so.350, 12 spd, 18 FA,20 pusher, 44 rears on Camelback - she's no showpiece but a good, solid, well maintained old truck. The problem I have been having is that anywhere from say 20mph on up, empty especially but you can feel it loaded sometimes as well, it will start to surge or hop or some damn thing. It happens most noticeably on smooth, flat roads with a light or trailing throttle. I cant tell if its a hop causing it to surge or vice versa. The tires are all good, cant see the bogies jumping around, the steering wheel is smooth, no vibrations, no weird wear patterns. I'll hold the throttle dead nuts stationary and I can feel and hear this surging/hopping. Any input on this vexing issue is appreciated, Thanks, Rick
  9. Hello all, I am currently running a nice old R model with a 350 and a twelve speed that I cannot seem to get to shift nice and smooth....especially splitting fourth and fifth. I've tried everything I can think of, clutch, no clutch, short shifting, winding her right up, jake on, jake off, throwing it into neutral to split, and I still cant consistently shift her as smooth as I'd like. I've run a mess of different engine/trans combinations over the years, including a couple of 350/12s and I have never had this much trouble getting one to shift the way I want. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Rick
  10. I'm kicking around the idea of building a Superliner to haul logs and am looking for info. on shops that know their way around an E-9. I'm not looking to make 1000 horse but more along the lines of any improvements for longevity, if this makes any sense, thanks Rick
  11. Hello all, We are going to be going right through my trusty old R-model this winter and was wondering if you guys new where I can pick up interior parts like dash and interior panels, headliner and radio mount, basically all the parts I need to restore the cab of the old girl, Thanks, Rick
  12. Hey Rob, Welcome to BMT. I didnt get to spend much time in Fairbanks, but I lived in AK for 'round about 8 years, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Nome, Kotzebue, all over the place, absolutely loved it up there. Hell my Dad, who just passed recently, lived out in Chicken for a long time....beautiful country, great people - Now I live in the Peoples Republik of Massachusettes and let me tell you I can not wait to get back to AK. Take care, Rick
  13. Thanks to both for the compliments, the way I look at it is that the truck is my office, where I go to work every day. How the truck looks not only represents the outfit I work for (Good outfit, too) and me, but also my wife, because thats her name on the front.
  14. Hey all, I just put a few pics up of the truck I've been driving for the past couple of months, she's no rocket with a 300 and a 5 speed, but she goes real well, tight and quiet, I've been cleaning and polishing the hell out of it, have the brides name on it and with a little more work I should have her looking pretty good.
  15. Hello to all. I talked to my bank today regarding financing to purchase an older (1989) Mack and they want nothing to do with it. Where would I want to go to obtain financing? Thanks, Rick
  16. Thanks for all your input on this guys, I'll take all the advice I can get because to myself and my fiance this is a HUGE decision. This would be our first experience purchasing a truck and working for ourselves so it is extaordinarily important that we have as much information as possible, from as many different perspectives as possible, so that we are able to make an informed decision. Keep your opinions coming and thanks again, Rick
  17. I am kicking around the idea of buying a triaxle dump here in Mass. and was wondering what you all think. I'm looking at a 87 Superliner, fresh E9, well maintained for 34,000....the way I look at it is that I can get this rig and make the same hourly rate as the guys who are paying crazy monthly payments for their brand new rigs and I'll have a payment roughly the same as buying a new pickup truck, plus I can do all the work on the truck myself...let me know what you think, thanks, Rick
  18. Damn Man! Just knocked the wind right out of my sails.....what you are saying make perfect sense but yet somehow....
  19. Damn Don, thats quite a website you have there....nice work. Rick
  20. Hey all, I have been kicking around the idea of installing twin turbochargers on our E-9 500. Before you all start yelling at me to not mess with it, I don't want to increase the boost pressure, I was thinking more along the lines of two smaller turbos with the same total output as the big single turbo. It would go something like this - we've got dual cowl mount air filters each plumbed to their respective turbo, the outputs of the turbos would be run through a y-pipe to a common air to air cooler and then to the engine. The exhaust would of course be independent, straight from each turbo directly to its own stack....straight stack of course. The goal here is not so much along the lines of improved performance but for the SOUND......the whistle of the twin turbos and then the staccato thump of that big 'ole V-8 pounding up a hard pull, plus I think you might be able to keep the EGT down a bit with the better better breathing and scavenging properties.....what do you think, good, bad, maybe? I'm interested to hear what you all think, Thanks , Rick
