  1. A good book on the subject, "The Arsenal of Democracy" by A.J Baine. Interesting that Henry Ford was opposed to the war but agreed to let his son, Edsel Ford, and right hand man, "Cast Iron" Charlie Sorensen proceed with building Willow Run and the B-24s. In the end, their bold declaration to build "a bomber an hour" was successful but not without many obstacles along the way, both in manufacturing and dealing with the lives of the thousands of workers hired to run the plant.
  2. A sharp looking red Ford F-450 wrecker.
  3. The Plymouth, MA Fire Department has a tanker built on the same F-900 6X6 chassis.
  4. Until recently, the Jaffrey, NH Fire Department operated a 1942 U.S. Army Class 325 Chevrolet 4X4 as a brush truck. The Class 325 was similar to the Class 110 but the 325 had a front mount pump. During WW II military fire apparatus was built by many different manufacturers on different chassis so it wasn't unusual to see Mack bodies on Chevy or Brockway chassis. Everyone pitched in to do what was needed to win the war.
  5. World War II U.S. Army, Class 110 fire truck. Chevrolet 4X4 chassis with a body built by the Army's Quartermaster Corp at Fort Holabird, MD.
  6. "Kill" is from the Dutch language, it refers to a body of water such as a creek, tidal basin, or small river. You will see the word used in places where many Dutch settled such as New York and Pennsylvania.
  7. In 1975 I visited the Mack World Headquarters in Allentown and purchased this sweatshirt. No way does it fit anymore but I've held on to it all these years.
  8. "The F.D.N.Y. Super Pumper System" by John A. Calderone may still be available. A good book on the subject.
  9. And one for 70mackMB.
  10. I found two photos of Mack "R" models. The calendar was missing two months.
  11. I believe that the rear steer on the Tender was to facilitate picking up the large diameter hose after use. The plan was to back the Tender up as the hose was reloaded and the trailer could be steered. Apparently, the concept wasn't practical and the tiller was removed. Original plans for the Tender were to have the hose mounted on reels but that didn't work out either. In any event, I would like to have seen it in operation back in the day. Too bad that it didn't end up in either the FDNY or Mack museums.
  12. About 20 years ago I was out for a walk when something bright red on the side of the road caught my eye. I went over to look and found this 1973 Mack calendar. It's condition wasn't too bad. My favorite photo is October, 1973 which features six FDNY Aerialscopes.
  13. My late father-in-law drove that Mack "ED" when he worked at Abbott Machine Company.
  14. I used to make deliveries to Sylvania in Hillsborough and would drive by Kemp's. I never stopped in. I remember that he had Litchfield, NH Fire Department's 1937 Maxim sedan cab pumper and one of Lowell, MA Fire Department's Mack "C" model pumpers with the roof cut off of it. I think that the roof was put on Hopkinton, NH Fire Department's semi-cab Mack "C" model ladder truck.
  15. A photo of this 1918 Mack "AC" appears in John B. Montville's book, "Mack". It is an aircraft searchlight truck with dual radiators, generator, and light projection equipment.
  16. Bedford, MA Fire Department purchased a 1972 Mack "CF", 1000/500, from FDNY and had it rehabbed by E. J. Murphy in 1984. Murphy built a crew cab with matching doors.
  17. Just curious, Hagerstown is now Volvo Powertrain but the workers are Mack employees and UAW members? What operations are in Jacksonville, FL?
  18. All the "B" model fire engines that I operated ('56 - '62) had 707s and five speeds, the "L" models had four speeds.
  19. Market Basket Supermarkets, MA/NH/ME, is selling this reusable shopping bag with a Mack "Anthem" logo on it.
  20. Market Basket Supermarkets is pretty consistent in its vehicles. For a long time all its tractors were Ford "L" series then it changed to Mack Pinnacles and now Mack Anthems. Its service vans are all red Ford "E" and Transit vans. Not sure if these are leases or company owned. Market Basket is big in eastern MA and southern NH plus one store in Maine.
  21. fxfymn: Any updates on the 1925 Mack "AB" pumper that you posted awhile back? Thanks.
  22. I assuming that the body was built by another company and Ford built the chassis. Like Ford fire trucks, Ford builds the chassis and another company supplies the firefighting body.
  23. One of Nashua, NH Public Works Department's new 2019 Mack "LR", CNG powered recycling trucks. McNeilus body. There are also 2019 "LR" side loader rubbish trucks.
  24. Ogunquit, ME Public Works Department, Ford F-550 mini rubbish truck.
  25. Can you post this on the SPAAMFAA Facebook page? This is an organization for owners and fans of old fire trucks; there must be someone there who needs a parts truck.
