  1. That was a common thing for Hendricksons,Jim. They had used ROSS steering gears in them. The horn button (or hub) said ROSS on it,with the ring attached to it.Had to be real fun to get your fingers caught in it,wouldn't it? That one pictured, has the ring, but its zip-tied to the spokes in the steering wheel! Hey, at least they didn't just throw it away!
  2. Its the internet thing. You know, you can change your height, weight, what you do for a living..................................just don't send a picture of your LOSER self with a stellar description!!
  3. I have the OVERDRIVE where they visit headquarters('72).Thats when Mr. Z.C.R. Hansen was the boss! Just remember how proud he was of that building and bringing all phases of the operation back to Allentown where it belonged. Allentown,Pa. must have thought he was a god for a while! That bulldog was in more places than you could count! Not only on the trucks, but on every item you could think of! Sad to see the HQ's gone to N.C..Glad I was able to go through the Hansen Building twice! A real treat for a kid who just wanted to work with and around .................Al
  4. Always good to see an R model get another chance at life right here in the U.S.A.!!
  5. Just good enough to get out, huh?
  6. Hey,that one takes a boat ride everyday!
  7. Yes,H&H/F. Smith Cartage-gone but not forgotton! That had a Bernardi Cartage sticker on it last-that fell off too!
  8. No doubt it would do the job in Nigeria, might even be too good for that! I don't mind Hendrickson suspension, but not over camelback! Possibly future "Ammunition Carrier" in a 3rd world country near you! Front bumper all set up to "Crash the gate doin' 98 (uh,maybe 58)"!!
  9. I was hoping there was a picture or 2 around, somewhere,Trent! Must have been an M-45. I remember it had a huge V-4 Bendix air compressor on it.They had to cut a hole inthe side of the hood so that 2 outer cylinders would fit with the hood closed.Must have needed the big compressor to run all those brakes! I guess one trailer was cut up for scrap, but the rest of the unit, went to auction awhile back.No problem, thanks for starting it,Trent!
  10. This one (which I had a shot of on the first page),is parked right next to my storage trailers. It has a non running 6-71,and a 10 speed in it.The cab is rotted really bad,but the damn doors shut like a new one! (go figure).Mirrors have thieved off of it(no biggie, same a R-series IH).Otherwise complete. The last year I remember seeing this truck on the road was 1986.That was the year I got out of the ARMY,and started hauling for Meyer Material Co. with my own truck. This truck was originally a Glen Meyer truck out of Palatine,Ill.
  11. That was a field of "punkins",220!
  12. Mr. Brian Dhamer (AKA PeterMack on BMT) has sent me MORE Chicagoland R model pictures to keep this thread going! Thanks,Brian! These 2 photos for your Chicago area R model of the day go to...Curran Contracting Co.,a roadbuilding outfit, of Crystal Lake,Il. These trucks had the old logo on them, and have since been replaced with newer CH's and RD's (and a new logo!).Their main office and old plant ,is on property that bordered the old Vulcan Materials pit in Crystal Lake. They had a HUGE MACK off-road tractor, that pulled double belly dumps to supply their asphalt plant with material. The current top lowboy driver at Curran, drove that massive MACK,and has told us he will provide us with a picture soon! Can't wait!
  13. Nice lookin' trucks, for sure! Always liked that RD bumper better than the "corporate"(as MACK called it) bumper.
  14. That one probably already has a ticket on the "Truck Boat"!
  15. The only Allison engine I remember in a write up,was years ago in W O T,they did a story on a V-12 Allison airplane motor installed in a Sterling tractor. But that wasn't a diesel, for sure! The Allis-Chalmers diesel was derived from the Buda diesel, which A-C purchased, lock, stock, and barrel for use in their products. From what I heard, they were real "hot rods",for awhile and then they would fail. This was the early '70's and the "Big Al" could be ordered with a rating high as 450hp.The article stated that they had better luck with them when they detuned them.A 1693 (TA) Clatterpillar could make 425hp all day with little problems. No detuning,no nuthin'! I believe they did replace them with a Cummins,as you say.Just a few of them escaped "boat anchor" status.
  16. I hear ya. Modern day LT,I call 'em! Like you say, look at the following already. The line-up at Lititz was a sight to see.
  17. The barn where I park the BCR,there is a bone stock barn job AMX,must be around a '69-'70 I'm guessin'? Not too bad of shape- a survivor!
  18. I don't know,Ernie? I'll have to look into that. Used to see 'em on a few different trucks. But now that you mention it,lot of Diamond T's,and Hendricksons. I'll ask a truck parts guy thats been around,I bet he'll have an answer! Al
  19. Has some good specs, but you're going to have break out some Benjamins,to bring that one back.
  20. Not only all those options,Brad, but a "banjo" muffler besides!
  21. I like those also,Mark! They're classics
  22. NICE!
  23. Last picture I have of a Hendrickson for now, enjoy!
  24. Fitzgerald Glider Kits is doing a "land office business" right now, doing Freightliner gliders with remanned DD Series 60 engines in them.Cores on the 60 series engines, are worth a good buck,as they rebuild 'em and install them in the kits! Pre-emission engines mounted in a kit,are real popular right now.
  25. Its just a habit,I guess? Pictures are only part of the story! If I know a little bit about the truck,I like to share it with those who enjoy this stuff!
