2006 CX613 AC 460p ASET 460- How to boost power/MPG?
rsb502 replied to mercury's topic in Engine and Transmission
sounds like a typical ASET engine, Mack changed the rear wheel horsepower requirements when they went from the ETECH to the ASET the ASET 460P or 487hp doesnt make the same hp as the ETECH 460xt (487hp) its actually allowed to rear wheel 68% and be considered good ( ithink it was 68) I cant remember but it was like 12% less than the ETECH. There are ways to make power, retuning the ecm will do a ton its just screwed by the emisions and its all in the ECM tuning if it was set free it would run great but instead they are cut wayy back to meet emissions requirments. Illinois dyno center will reflash your ecm for power I think there are a couple others now too. Oh and with an 18 spd and 4.10 rears on 11R22.5's I would think it would pull great but I dont know what kind of hills your pulling, obviously due to torque multiplication you would downshift to 8th low to be in direct to get the best rear wheel hp, go into OD and you lose torque to the wheels fast a 3.90 might seem to pull better just because you get more speed in direct, how far is your driver dropping gears before it pulls the hill? If it pulls in direct its making enough power for the load you just need to get the driver to realise thats what its geared for. A 4.10 on the interstate isnt that great you would have to drop down to about 47 mph to be at 1600rpm with a 41" tall 11r22.5 in direct which is pretty slow a 3.36 puts you at 60 at the same rpm. I obviously dont know what about the truck your driver is complaining about I had one tell me one of my trucks wouldnt pull right once and I got in it and it did great in direct gear in the power band of the engine about1600rpm, i took a ride with him and he had it wound up in OD and when he had to drop to direct and the rpm pulled back to about 1600 he said it wasnt pulling right and we had to have a talk about what I have typed above, after that he tried hitting some hills in direct from 1500-1700 rpm and he said he never had to drop a gear. I suggest taking this into consideration and driving it yourself thinking about what gear you are in and what rpm your running, too many rpm and it will drop back to where it makes torque to few and you will have to drop a gear to get up into the torque, and as always OD wont pull as well as direct thats whay a lot of truck used to be made with direct trans and 3.36 and 3.55 gears they made more rear wheel toque than an OD trans and lower gears making the same rpm at the same speed. -

fuller 10 speed will be shorter than an 8LL it doesnt have a compound reduction back box, it will fit right in the same hole and use the same shifter, etc. but you will have to lengthen the first driveshaft section 4 inches. I would fix the 8LL you will miss the Double low 14.45 gear, the rtlo 10 spd has a 11.06 low gear its a huge difference off road. -
Looks like the cab guard is causing the exhaust to get trapped and recirculate into the intake, probably while you are stopped loading or unloading, I would remove the stack top and replace it with a 90 degree elbow and pipe to vent it to the outside. I know the trucks here are set up that way for that reason, the stack top on your truck is actually not made for enclosed areas it is made to disperse the high heat exhaust gas in a wide area so it cools faster, it works great when its out in the open but not so much trapped under there it again disperses the gas in a wide area so in that configuration it will get pulled right into the air intake.

Well I guess there are a bunch of shops that don't know how to fix it, I'll get the parts list if I can find it, takes about an hour after you get to the tranny. I think one of em they fixed in the truck. -

if its an 85 E9 400 its probably an AMBAC pump, remove the 6 bolts on top of the cover at the back of the pump (cut the lock wire) then you can look down into the governor housing, move the rack by hand to make sure it moves freely and returns to idle the stop arm is on the right side you can actuate it and the throttle arm on the left side and watch to see if the rack sticks, also check to make sure its not the throttle arm return spring broken or missing if so as the rack is advanced by the puff limiter as the rpm increases it can push it past your input on the pedal, then when you grab the shut down knob you pull the rack back the other way. just my two cents, oh and if you back off the nut on top towards the back of the engine and tighten the one towards the front of the engine you are adjusting the rack stop for more fuel.

nothing wrong with a Mack 10 spd, the gear steps in the 10 actually make it easier to drive loaded in high range than an 8LL, I like the Mack 10's I have driven I had one straight 10 and a 310M multi speed reverse that one was nice in a dump truck you could shift all thru low range in reverse to get the perfect gear. I dont think it would be a great idea to swap it out but the reason is you could have that one fixed in a day for less than what it would cost to get the parts and the driveshaft done to swap em out. -

that is a common problem in an 8LL most truck shops can handle that pretty fast and pretty cheap, I had one done and I know of about 20 others around here that had the same issue, dont wait too long pushing on the shifter to hold it in gear will move the gear farther than it is supposed to go and wear on the gears get it fixed ts not as bad as you think it takes 4 parts to fix I think it cost me $450 to get mine done. -
Its a superliner, looks like itll need some work to get it back shiny for sure.
-
Hmm, where to start.... well yep its red just like every peterbilt in the country, the salt would bug me but he hasn't started cleaning it up yet so hell get it when he does, the door handles hang towards the back of the cab at about a 30 degree down angle installed right and not wore out, I don't know if the rw will be the b of years from now they have completely different looks the b is like the 57 Chevy of big trucks and the rw is like the big block camaro it sceams power when you see that big grille and long wide hood, I wish you luck with it I think it'll treat you right looks like you got a good one(other than the Pete resale red lol) I'm hoping to get to one or two of the pa shows with mine this year I just have to decide which one would be best macungie or lititz.

Ha my 84 was an RWS722LST with an E9 440, 12 spd, 44 camelback rears had a longer wheelbase though I think it was a 212" it was a triaxle when I got it, I cant remember the vin I think it was 1416

I dont think I would go that far in a bobtail MB with a duplex I doubt it goes over 55 flat out but I havent tried for speed yet, get with MHE9 he can deliver it! I gotta get a lowboy trailer so I can start moving some stuff with my Superliner it seems lonely just sitting in the driveway.
