  1. Old American LaFrance trucks are getting rare in decent shape just like Old Macks, seems everybody likes cutting up fire trucks for scrap, looks like a good one there.
  2. whats a drag axle? a tag axle? Is it air up air down, or spring up air down? is the air leak only present with the parking brakes released? does it have spring brakes?
  3. From talking to a couple dealers (Nashville and Knoxville TN) it seems they make no distinction anymore between vocational and highway specs. All the guys I have talked to keep repeating is economy and fuel mileage, they don't seem to get the average speed or off highway aspect of dump truck work. I agree 4.19 rears are lower than the road gears in the high 3's but they are still specing a truck based on engine rpm @ highway speed for fuel mileage. I did a little quick math to get some low gear numbers for off road use with one salesman and he actually seemed surprised I was more interested in low speed off road use than highway cruise speed. I had to explain to the guy that I would run the interstate to get to the job, or part time in between but would spend over 80% of my time under 55mph. I also can't understand why when I call a dealer to ask about a dump truck or chassis for sale they don't have the light weight available, its a truck your going to use to haul by the ton weight is key. I guess I don't understand the "NEW" truck sales tactics, maybe if I was running 300 trucks and wanted maximum fuel economy.

    OH OH

I'm almost done giving to the government.
  5. They're both mounted to brackets on or near the engine, probably one on each side, left rear and right front. Get both fuel filters swapped out again and we can go from there, is an electronic pump engine or mechanical?
  6. Like they said grease is cheap, I did my dump trucks weekly, road trucks every two or three weeks unless the weather was funky. Bad weather or I was hauling the dump trailer off road then weekly.
  7. Well 2000rpm is pretty much it for an E7 but we need more info to help you. What model of truck is this, what model engine(mechanical or vmac1 electronic), when did the issue start or has it always been this way since you got it? A 93 CH with a VMAC E7 won't run over 2000rpm, the power band rums out at 1800 so you may be trying to do something the truck was never built to do.
  8. I'd run the 4.80 with a 12R24.5 tire, 4.50 with an 11R22.5, that puts you right around 1550@65mph which is perfect for torque and pulling hills. Lots of talk about economy and fuel mileage gets thrown around with truck dealers now and for a highway truck it pays off in the long run. However in a heavy haul,on/off road truck a higher gear is killing your bottom end which is where the truck will spend 75-85% of its life. Its really up to you, you have all the information so I'd say you are a well informed buyer, you have to figure your average speed and work from there. For a dump truck that is going to run off road hauling dirt and rock low gears are key to keep drive line stress to a minimum and keep the truck moving on extreme grades and in soft ground. For a dump truck like say a quad purchased to stockpile a concrete or asphalt plant the truck will spend more of its life on the road and can benefit from 4.19 gears for fuel economy. I would have to go with the numerically higher gears above for the work you have planned, like I said all the dump trucks I've ever run were 4.42 or 4.64 rears with 11R24.5 drives and the 4.42 trucks could have been geared steeper at times with the manual transmission where the Allison would have done ok due to the torque converter.
  9. Nice truck, very few left in that condition, excellent resto.
  10. Yeah Ive been trying to track down some more E9 parts to hide in plastic in the garage(not getting many since Im broke)but Im looking!
  11. Green works, most are black but Phillips pigtails are green, or they were the last time I bought one.

HA! Affordable Retirement Act? so what about Social Security? wasnt that supposed to be the thing to help those that needed thru their retirement years? shure seems like that worked out great for everybody doesn't it.
  13. Damn Skippy, I ran my 84 Superliner everyday hauling containers, dump trailers and lowboys, no light weight b.s., my 04 Granite hauling 74,000 loaded running less miles had more done to it per year also.

WTF? I am really getting tired of hearing about what these ass wipes are doing or trying to do to the constitution, really tired!
  15. Just so everybody knows, move in here, you'll never leave the property. The hundreds of acres of wooded hills around here can hide lots of stuff from sight!
  16. Contributor to the delinquency of adults!
  17. Helluva find there, now you have to mount em on two Superliners
  18. send me your email in a pm and I will forward the spec sheet I have for a dump chassis, its set up for a 16' body and a tag axle to make a heavy tri axle.
  19. The Mack spec sheet I have specifies Allison synthetic fluid and trans cooler from the factory in the 4500RDS, this seems to be a good spec sheet to build a Granite from, it has the MP7 405M, 4500 Allison 6 speed, Im still not sold on the M Ride 46k(Volvo T ride) rear suspension but it is spec'd in this truck and supposedly has a close to 4300# weight savings over 44K camelback, I would change some things to make it nicer for the driver, if it was mine to drive daily probably the Rawhide package, if not every available option for the interior and a full gauge package.
  20. Yes a retarder is available with the 4500 series, I asked around today and from what I have been told nobody here has ever seen a 4700 series in any truck, according to my buddy at KW they are supposedly reserved for high horsepower heavy haul trucks all they sell in dump trucks is the 4500 series. Also from my Allison literature the 4500 is available with low,md and high capacity retarders and the 4700 is only available with medium, the 4700 series seems to be a very specialized transmission for specific applications only.
  21. 4.64 rears, an Allison 4500RDS(.67OD) and 12R24.5 tires(45.6"diameter) makes for 1640rpm @ 70mph, I had 4.64 rears in my 04 Granite with a Mack 310M(.73OD) and 11R24.5 drives and that gave me 1800 @ 70 mph and it did great for me all over the middle TN area, the 4.19 rears Mack is pushing for Vocational trucks now seem high to me with an Allison, with the .67OD and 12R24.5 tires that would make for 1450 rpm @ 70 and for a truck that rarely gets there that's wasting a lot of gear where you need it down low. Good Luck with the truck and keep us informed on what you do.
  22. Rawhides are nice trucks, the package is available in the Pinnacle and Granite series now and makes the interior awful nice and comfy. You get all the shiny stuff on the outside and leather seats and steering wheel and a brushed nickel dash inside with the Rawhide package. Talk to other with the M drive before you buy, there are some mixed emotions on it , they run and shift smooth and have lots of great features but apparently they are not repairable with any shaft end play you just have to swap it out.
  23. asphalt plant! cool, they are freakin heavy.
  24. I wouldn't be scared of ASET engines, they are just CCRS ETECH's with a different turbo and software really, they are really reliable after they are upgraded to the newer versions of software and the newer turbo, the 98-2000 pre CCRS ETECH is probably the best most reliable engine Mack has ever built in my mind, they just run forever and can be rebuilt very easily. I did some math last year on purchasing an older CHN with an ETECH and rebuilding the engine, trans, and rears(Mack or Eaton parts done with warranty) and repainting the truck and redoing the interior and I came up with a cost of around $75,000, it sounds high for a 2000-2002 CHN but its a new truck withhard part warranty when your done and versus the new CHU cost of $165,000 and the constant emissions, injector cup and electronic issues, it made pretty good sense to me.
  25. I'd rebuild the old ones and look for a pre emissions truck with a ton of miles for cheap and refurb it for a "new" truck.
