  1. Somebody told you a fib, theres only one cam for E9's in trucks I know of, and they run awfully good with multi speed transmissions, my 84 had a Mack 12 speed, my 85 has an Eaton RTX 14609 9 speed that im planning on swapping to a 13 or 18 speed when I can. The swap from a Mack trans to a Mack trans would be easier, if you put in an Eaton youll need to swap the trans bellhousing more than likely and either way youll have to shorten the front section of your driveshaft.
  2. Hmmm, well I'll be damned.
  3. Yeah multi range transmissions will spoil you, I miss the 12 spd in my old RW, had a gear for anything in that truck. I liked the t310m in my 04 Granite too, it was a std 310m not an MLR but with 4.64 rears and 11R24.5's it had plenty of gear and seemed to have better gear steps than an 8LL. I have pondered swapping a 12 speed into the 85 RW but its a pain to do from an Eaton, I'll probably just go to an 18spd.
  4. Neat looking truck, looks like a hard core Mack already with that grille guard.
  5. Resale red looks good with car lot wax (water) on it.
  6. I need a tri or quad axle Superliner Dump truck, I've been looking at RD's and Granites and the RD might be alright but I don't think the Granite would suit me anymore.
  7. Ya know that truck brings up another question I can't get an answer for, if the Super Econodyne is supposed to be the greatest fuel mileage getter in the land, why go with short side skirts? I mean come on it comes with a front air dam, a roof mounted air deflector, extended chassis skirts and super high gears and low rolling resistance tires, but the side skirt stops two feet in front of the back tire, wth?
  8. Farmers right, looks like a wrap but it looks good either way.
  9. ok
  10. More reverse gears? you have 3 already! lol
  11. gmerrill is right the railroad claim to fame is low rolling resistance, I don't know what it takes to move the weight but most railcar wheels are 33 or 36" diameter and have a contact patch on the rail about the size of a dime. The flange isn't there to keep it on the rail thru curves either (well kinda) the rail wheels are actually tapered not flat and the taper of the tread centers the wheelset between the rails, if everything is right the flange should never touch the rail, thus reducing friction.
  12. I would go lower than 4.35 for a dump truck, probably 4.42 if it was me maybe even 4.64, most Granite dumps spec'd out with Allison autos have more along the 5.02 lines but that is a little to steep for much highway use, remember the more gear the better your toque multiplication and the better it will pull, I would bet it would be a turd with a 3.94, doubt it would be too great with a 4.35. I will go by Mack of Nashville tomorrow and see what the gear ratios are in the Allison auto dump chassis they have in stock, I know two around here are 4.64, and one is a 5.02.
  13. Paint? I figured it was a wrap!
  14. Well it was bound to start somewhere, roads are falling apart and there's not enough money to fix em so fuel taxes are the best answer even if not the most accepted. I don't know about most of the Interstates in PA(its been a while) but if the stretch from Chattanooga TN to Mt Eagle on I24 is good for 70mph anything is.
  15. Egt still shouldn't climb on flat ground definitely not to 1000, and 28# of manifold press sounds low for a Vmac 3 300 or 400hp engine seems it should be closer to 34, my 400 was anyway.
  16. I would swap it out for another Mack trans, with gears as low as yours you can go to a std range trans the low in a T313LR or T318LR would just be wasted. Remember the old LTL with the 400 Cummins is going to pull better eaverything else being close to equal, your comparing a 14 liter engine to a 12 liter engine. Your egg's shouldn't climb over 900 with a stock 400 no matter what the trans or rears and especially not with rears in the 5's, that's a lot of torque multiplication. I would recommend checking the engine out first, if your egt's are getting high on a stock 400 with low gears your probably not getting enough air to the engine, check for boost leaks and other issues before you swap your trans. I agree the gear steps in a 7 speed are pretty ridiculous but with 5.32 rears and a 400 I find it hard to believe it doesn't pull good. I've run tri axle Mack RD dumps with 350hp, 8LL, and 4.42 rears on tall 24.5 rubber and they ran fine around 74000#, mind you 460's run better but my poi t being your not heavy enough to be that bad off with 5.32 rears.
  17. an you post a link Ray, I tried to find it and failed miserably.
  18. That's a big pine cone in that tree, just get her down for decoration.
  19. The force needed once moving is less, getting it moving is the key, then you have to add the dragging a railroad tie in front of the car wheels pushing a pile of rock to the equation. That truck basically serves as a locomotive, and ballast regulator all in one when were unloading rock. Ive seen them pull 10 loaded cars before, not a big deal once moving but they don't like to get rolling on any kind of grade, and you have to consider the 200,000-286,000# weight limits on each car, so figure 1000 tons for ten cars to be on the low end.
  20. Most of the grading and utilities companies here use 330 CAT, PC400 Komatsu sized excavators, the Limestone is too hard to dig they have to drill and shoot it first.
  21. Yeah, that was only about 600,000 lbs behind him, of course once you get it rolling its not that bad, stopping is something else entirely. The way we empty old hoppers full of ballast is complete B.S., we have ballast cars but they wont let the local gangs use them so we have to put a rr tie on the track in front of the back wheels of the car we are unloading, use a come along on each side hooked to the unloading door and slowly open it leaving it open just enough to spread the ballast, then as the truck pulls the cars they spread the rock and the tie that is being pushed by the rear wheels screeds the rock level with the top of the rail. After the rock is down and the truck and cars are back in the siding the ballast regulator and tamper come to tamp it and grade the ballast.
  22. Little worse than Baskin actually.
  23. If anyone doubts Allison transmissions ability to pull a load and maintain slow speeds without overheating here's a pic of a Western Star with a 475hp Cat and a 4500 series Allison that just dumped three carloads of ballast.
  24. Yeah, its a p.o.s., L&L Equipment Sales has it, they're pretty much just junk merchants. They like to pressure wash, paint, rig, then jack the price up and hope somebody buys it and gets out of the lot before it breaks. Maddog, your the only one that noticed the tag axle, I got into an argument with the guy there about that.
  25. It definitely needs a trailer, wonder if he'll do an R for next year?
