  1. Well, my dozer & excavator have two but my CH has three. The wiring diagram for the RD was showing four, even for 12v, but I just couldn't accept it. Two it is! Thanks for everyones input!
  2. Talked with my local Mack today, guy in the body shop, he said what has happened with mine is the door shell has been replaced and there was no way of making the lock work without changing the door shell back to old style. So yes there are two Mack R doors. Guess I'll pass on this repair for now.
  3. Hello everyone! Working on the 79 RD and I have a battery question. I bought the truck with two batterys in it and one is going bad. I want to replace both and add the other two if it's neccessary. Question is, do I need the four batterys? Evidently a Mack engineer somewhere down the line thought so, but what do you guys think?
  4. Welcome. If you changed your air solenoid, you might have plumbed it backwards or it may be bad itself. Also, there's nothing wrong with the fan running all the time, no need to put it on the side line. You might loose some fuel economy, that's it.
  5. I've been having a similar problem with my 6 spd mack. Visit this thread for some photos that might help you out. Good luck! I'm still scratching my head on mine. http://www.bigmacktrucks.com/index.php?/topic/35290-trxl-107-speed-cable-adapter/
  6. Sorry to bring up an old thread but it fits my problem. I went to replace the door locks on the 79 RD I just bought and the passenger’s side door key cylinder does not line up with the latch lock, which explains why it was broke. I guessing somewhere down the line something got switched out. So if I understand all this, there were only two options for the door latch? My door latch is positioned to high inside the door for the key cylinder shaft to fit into its location on the door latch lock. Thanks!
  7. Good Morning Brian, thanks for your thoughts. When I tested it the speedo cable was attached to the gear ratio reducer and the speedo worked, with a drill. I suspect it could be slipping where the spline comes off of the gear ratio reducer and goes into the shaft & gear that slides into the trans. I've got to test it at that point next chance I get.
  8. Welcome neighbor!
  9. Almost a good deal.....got it all back together today and no luck, still no speedo. Removed the gear ratio assembly off the trans, put a drill on it and the speedo does work, my drill runs at about 35 MPH. Also, pulled the gear shaft out of the trans yoke and it looks fine and seems to fit snug back in place on the assembly and in the trans. Any clues?
  10. The correct term would be "tang". I got me a metal tang today so now I should be able to tell how slow I'm going.....
  11. It's hard to tell, looks like it could have worn thin and just twisted. I read in another thread where these were replaced with metal but in return would break the cable if a problem occured.
  12. Thanks J! Also, my cable spins easily but I didn't see any lubrication, should it have any? Other than it being plastic, wondering why it broke.
  13. Hello everyone! Hope all is well. Started a speedometer repair on the 79 RD today and discovered that the plastic adapter between the speedometer cable and the transmission gear was broke. Anyone know what this is called and is it a Mack only item? Trying to save some run around time and didn't want to go in the parts store asking for a plastic thing-A majigy in the moring.... Thanks... edited: think either my brain or my fingers are not co-operating this evening.
  14. I'm not familar at all with older Volvo's but the newer ones like the EC220D I just bought will hang with the best of them. Very smooth and strong, 175 HP and with mine digging stumps it has averaged 3.8 gallons hour. The Deere excavator I sold would have used at least 8 gal.
  15. Well, I did have a Deere excavator but couldn't afford the fuel for it....lol Besides, it was an Hitachi with Deere paint. The only thing deere about it was the engine. Don't get me wrong everything else of mine is John Deere.
  16. I'm in no way affiliated, just ran across this auction full of macks and thought I'd share. http://www.auctionzip.com/cgi-bin/photopanel.cgi?listingid=2057088&category=0&zip=&kwd=
  17. The truck I just bought has an engine from a '73 fire truck or at least thats what I was told. The engine date is '73 and the number is ENDT 675. No matter what it is I'd say its a good find!
  18. I pick red too. Now what shade....lol I told the painter fire truck red.. I did get a little sticker shock for paint price, but he does go the distance on prep. He also said that red paint itself cost more? I don't think the truck will slow down anytime soon for the paint, might have to wait until winter, well see. Got about 40 loads to hall with her on first job, I'll post some pics.
  19. I appreciate everyone's input. Things are different in my area. Most of the material below the topsoil is suitable for a decent compaction, some better than others. It also depends on if there's an engineer involved...lol The price range here varies from $7 - $14 a cy. The big contract jobs get better than that sometimes. Of course, it can be moved onsite a lot cheaper.
  20. Hello....As most of you know I just bought a dump for my excavation business. I'm curious what most are getting for a load of fill dirt or chert and what size of a load goes with that price. Looks like most local hauls around here are getting around $8 yard. Help is appreciated!
  21. Found the pic of that DM with gold light trim, also had gold grill mesh. Not a real good pic, but this is the truck I went to look at and ended up buying the truck that wasn't for sale This DM wasn't a bad truck, just needed more work than I had time for, it's still available.
  22. Thanks guys, gold dog on hood...check, gold engine.....check........ Also my antena base was gold at one time, it's pitted and faded like the hood dog but I can definately tell it was gold. It does have a mack 8 track radio, not sure if they all had mack radios at the time. The gold headlight trim I saw was on a DM but still might not be correct, just made me currious. I'm a little old fashioned when it comes to keeping as much of it original as possible. LOL....I've been shopping for 8-tracks too...hope it still works. Might try and find some of them gold half dogs for the doors too
  23. Very nice job, hope your back at it! Can't wait to see more pics of the finished product!
