  4. I've never been really pro or con union-wise,but i have seen in person some of the wasteful BS unions do,when i drove for Atlas Van Lines,we were contracted to deliver all the inside furnishings for the Resorts International Hotel/Casino,the job had to be done at night,we were warehousing everything. So we had a 8/9:00 pm dock time being as Atlantic City is all "Union" we (non-union drivers) were not even allowed in the trailers! the job was done on a floor by floor basis,so we would arrive with a mixed load of pretty much everthing that goes into a hotel, and the "un-loaders" were all un-employed (in their trades) union members,so anything made of wood, had to be pushed by carpenters,TV's lamps etc. by electricians and so on and so-fourth,what should have been a 4 hour job usually ended up taking between 8-12 hours! 1 hour break every 2 hours,2 hour "lunch" most of them came back drunk! and dare say anything about it it,or you would be "bounced" we even had to have "special" union "waivers" to go into our own trailers and secure all our equipment (straps, pads, decking bars etc.) of course the moving budget for the project went approx.$400,000 over budget,a fact my boss was not happy about! took 18 weeks longer than it should have, tied up our warehouse and 75 trailers for months! needless to say, that was our last venture dealing with union moves in Atlantic City!.....................................Mark

  12. Ron,i would have to agree! my Dad said the 903 was a real "Power-mouse" and i quote "Did'nt have the horse to pull a damn cork out of a bottle"! he ran this IH up until late 1971 pulling produce between South Jersey and Florida. He got tired of getting "stiffed" on freight bills from shady brokers, and dealing with all the BS that goes along with pulling a reefer, decided to hang it up (produce-wise) went out an bought a brand new 1972 White-Freightliner C.O.E with a 1693 Cat,13 speed, leased on with North American Van Lines in their Electronics/ Special products fleet,he stayed leased there almost 30 years, wore out 6 more trucks! I guess thats how i got my start in the Moving & Storage Bus.,rode with Dad many a summer, folded a SHITPOT of pads! rolled up i don't know how many straps! but feel i learned from one of the best! NAVL had kinda went downhill at the time i started,so i went on with Atlas, stayed there 22 years,i have only worn out 3 trucks so-far! LOL!.....................Mark

We had an owner-operator at Atlas who had his GMC Astro upholstered there, beautiful job! there was'nt much in an Astro to start with,i believe he even used the truck in some ads in Overdrive, its easy to spot,as the Astro had that distinctive "tunnel" so you could see down in the peep window in the pass. side door............................................Mark
