A small bit of progress from the last few days, all of the compartment doors are off and in primer, and the rear compartment is out.

It's been a while since there have been any updates, but at least I have a good reason (or reasons) Things have been a little busy on the personal side of life for me recently, as our twin sons were born almost 2 weeks ago, and almost 2 months ago we bought a house for our growing family! On top of doing a lot of overtime at work, this has left me with very little time for my "hobbies", which means very little progress on the engine. The new house is about 30 minutes away from my parent's house where I am storing it, so I have been taking odds and ends that I was able to remove (compartment doors, light mounts, etc) and working on prepping them for paint as time allows. In other news, my dad was also able to get his MB back up and running, after replacing almost the whole ignition system. I couldn't resist getting them some things from the Mack store

The wife and I took a trip to New England this past week to visit her family, just in time for not 1, but 2 blizzards! Started out in Boston and got out just before the first one hit, and spent the rest of the time with her family in New Hampshire. Pleasant Pond, Francestown NH: Hillsboro Center, NH: Hillsboro, NH: Had to swing by Kemp's in Hillsboro and snap a few pics, this REO tow truck and a few tractors are still there: This wasn't exactly a planned part of the visit, but the folks at Hillsboro Dodge were able to get my truck back on the road quickly despite the second snowstorm after the water pump started to go. Luckily, I was able to catch it before a catastrophic failure.

I'm pretty sure a large chunk of surviving retired Adams County apparatus are owned by the Lady's, including a lot of Macks; and I believe he does still have the Wagon, which had been painted white and spent some time at the 911/Training Center with Fairfield's old IH/Hamerly engine and Gettysburg's old air wagon. I did some research and the CF is currently at Luzerne County Community College. She definitely did look better in red! (not my photo, it was sent to me a few years ago)

And I shot this clip at the 2010 Adams County Volunteer Emergency Services Convention, it appears to be near the end of the restoration. They also had an L and CF engines that were originally red and ended up getting "slimed". Unfortunately the L was lost in a fire, and the CF is now with a training facility elsewhere in PA.

I was pretty fortunate, a lot of hose, nozzles and other equipment came with this when I bought it, there were just a few odds and ends (like the ladder) that I needed to get

So I haven't gotten to do much work on the actual truck, but I did acquire some more equipment to carry on it this weekend. Friday night I got some more hose (1-1/2" and 2"), and am planning on building "blitz boxes" to keep them in as crosslays. On Saturday, I loaded up and headed to Hamburg to pick up some hand tools, and from there proceeded to Boyertown to pick up a ladder from @yarnall. I then received the grand tour of the Yarnall truck collection, which made me green with envy and gave me something to work towards- if only I had the money, space, and a willing wife!

I finally found those pics that I had of the Schaefferstown Mack that rolled over, damage doesn't look too bad. According to the date on the photos, I took these in 2011.

It's a 500 gal tank, T type. No leaks that I've noticed, but I haven't filled it up completely, either.

My latest updates, from September 24 to a week or 2 ago. Work on the rig has slowed due to the weather finally getting cooler and trying to finish enclosing the back of the building it's kept in. Had a little visitor: Did some painting: Put things back together before the York muster: The big body panel suffered a little mishap after painting, and is a little scuffed and scratched, which I plan on fixing when I do the body. After the York Muster, removed the hosebed floor, grab handles, taillights, hard sleeve trays, ladder racks, rear spot lights and emergency lights. Planning to rewire the lights on the rear, after I get the turn signals off and paint the body. Any suggestions other than a lot of little turns with a wrench and small fingers? Removed the rear body panel. I couldn't figure out any way to remove it other than cutting the welds and removing the bumper, so I decided to cut the body panel where it met the bumper instead I plan on removing the rear compartment before cleaning everything up and starting to prime and paint.

I have some progress updates, but first an electrical question. Occasionally, when I start it up to move around at home, the voltmeter reads extremely high, and when I go near the battery box after moving the rig, it smells like the battery is cooking; however, the battery is not hot to the touch. Other times, I can start it and run and not have any problems at all. It seems to be happening intermittently, but if it's going to be a problem I want to fix it before I destroy my less than 1 year old batteries! Is there a voltage regulator that I should be looking at replacing?

I have a pic of this one sitting outside PA Fire Apparatus (Lady & Taylor) from a few years ago after it was rolled on its side, I'll have to see if I can find it. If I remember right, the damage wasn't too bad looking.

I believe this is the same one, after a refurb. It was in service until about a year or 2 ago, now in the hands of a private owner still in Central PA

A quick technical question- would I be ok running only (2) 12v batteries (1 on A, 1 on B), as opposed to 4 total? It originally ran 2 6v batteries on each in a 12v series, so unless there's something I'm missing, it should work, right?

A little bit of progress over the last few days. Removed the driver's side storage box/jump seat step, cleaned it up and have it in primer. I'm trying out the red primer to see if that helps darken up the red at all when I paint it; I may end up having to mix some black with my paint to get the desired color. I also plan on coating the inside and bottom of the box with bedliner to help with durability and appearance.

That squirt was in service with my engine back in the day in Bellwood. One of these days I'll get the engine up that way and re-unite them for some pics

The last couple weeks have been full of activity on the rig, culminating in staying up until 0230 on Friday night getting things back together to go to the Cumberland County Volunteer Fireman's Association parade on Saturday. A few of the old exhaust studs were stubborn, with one in particular holding up the whole project, which ended up needing drilled out. I ended up replacing about half of the studs with new, and all of the nuts are new, with anti-sieze applied before the final install. In a rush, I tried to paint the body around the dog box last Thursday, when it was 92 degrees and humid out, and the paint ended up with a severe orange peel effect; I'll fix that this week with the much nicer weather. I also replaced the spark plugs and plug wires on the right side, and the exhaust manifold went on with no other problems. I am amazed at how much quieter the engine is- you can actually hold a conversation while driving down the road now! As far as the Convention went, there were only a handful of antique rigs there, including a few hand pumpers, and I was the only Mack- the rest were ALF's. I'm also not sure I like the red paint that I chose, after spraying it on it appears too bright compared to what was inside the compartments and in the hard to reach places. In the last pic, there appears to be a difference between the colors on the dog box and the wheel; I used the exact same paint, but on the wheel I simply painted over the existing red paint, and on the dog box I used a gray primer. You can also see the orange peel effect around the dog box in that pic.

Just wanted to give a quick update- I have a manifold from Pfahl's, it's off a diesel but it is identical. I am currently visiting family in Boston, so it worked out perfectly to grab it on the way up! Plus, Matt was gracious enough to show me around his shop and trucks he's working on.

Quick update on the manifold issue; I'm waiting on a few people to get back to me who may have contacts to build a custom header. I also made a call to Cal Little today, he said he will check to see if he has any manifolds and get back to me tomorrow.
