  1. The DEF supply doesn't appear to be a problem here either. We just got some 55 gallon drums of it. The 505's seem to run pretty good and noise wise, at least it seems like it to me, are quieter than the 07' MP8's were.
  2. Check the belt tensioner (as goofy as that sounds). If the tracking mark is wider than the belt it indicates that the tensioner is worn out. If the tensioner is worn it can set up a vibration through the front cover on the engine which is then transferred to the camshaft sensor. There is a revised front cover with a gusset to reinforce the camshaft sensor. Being a 1999 truck it's also possible that there is wear to the camshaft thrust washer allowing the distance between the cam and sensor to change during operation. Additionally there might be a service datafile to help with this problem.
  3. Hey Bigen, did you ever get a hold of a manual? I'll send you the pages I have (if I can find them again). I looked back at your previous post about the engine brake, I'll think about it some more. Can't say as I remember hearing about any problems with weak Powerleash brakes. The only thing I can really think of would be the little screen on the bottom of the rocker arm brackets maybe being plugged up resulting in reduced oil pressure. A few years back Mack had some problems with casting sand in the cylinder heads resulting in coolant starvation to the air compressor, I suppose the same could happen with the oil gallies in the head. As far as the engine fan engaging with the brake, I don't think it would hurt. It might be possible to change the other parameters for the fan enagement too. I think Rowdy Rebel was on it regarding the EGR, but I'd still like to try it out.

  5. It's been in use in Europe for the last several years. It is also one of the emission control systems in use by power plants. It's too bad we have to have all the stuff on the trucks, hopefully it will be trouble free. On the plus side, all that emissions control equipment has allowed Mack and Volvo to increase the horsepower ratings on the engines. In 2007 the biggest MP8 rating was 485 hp, for 2010 the engine can be rated up to 505 hp. This increase is due to the fact that less EGR is used due to Urea injection. They have also "virtually eliminated" parked regens.
  6. Another thing you might do is check and make sure that the fan solenoid is plugged in to the correct connector on the engine harness. I think it is possible to connect it to the ether start connector.
  7. Current production (2010 emissions) Mack and Volvo engines are are factory filled with 10w30, which they say results in a pretty substantial fuel economy increase.
  8. I take it you're in Australia? The ground for the engine fan is provided by the engine ecu. The ecu controls the ground, and when it sees a request for fan operation it allows the circuit to open or close as needed. It is possible that the ecu is bad, but before proceeding with swapping out the ecu I would check all of the grounds on the engine, starter, alternator, and frame.
  9. Do not mix oils. Manufacturers use different chemical additives in their oils that are not always compatible. You might get away with mixing two oils of the same grade, but I wouldn't mix 15w40 with 5w30.
  10. The way you describe the problem it sounds like it's probably an electrical problem. On the left side of the engine compartment there should be a fuse panel bolted up to the cab bulkhead. This is the EPDM (engine power distribution module). Fuse 41 is located in this box and it supplies power to the fan clutch solenoid. Due to the location of the epdm it had a tendency to get road salt and contamination in it which would cause bad contact across fuses in the box. Take a look at the box and see if the terminals inside look corroded. With the engine running try wiggling the harness coming from the epdm and the harness on the engine as well.
  11. I didn't realize you had posted the VIN. You might want to look really close at the turbo and exhaust manifold on the engine, from what I can see it hasn't had a new turbo installed since 2005. If it hasn't had one replaced since then I would say it is inevitable that it will need one, the VGT turbo's for these engines are expensive. Just something to keep in mind before diving in.
  12. All of the data sheets I have on hand for the AC 460 engine say 1600 rpm +/- 50 rpm in order to keep it in it's range. Go here: http://www.macktrucks.com/default.aspx?pageid=52 and look at the bottom of the page for the "Mack Power Comparison" download. It shows some comparisons of Mack to other OEM engines. It's a little out of date and doesn't include any information on the MP8 or MP10 engines, but it does have the ASET AC engines listed there.

I should point out that much of the reason the local rebuild industry is gone is that manufacturers have made many of the parts needed for rebuilding their products so expensive that, by the time labor for the rebuild is added in, it is cost prohibitive to rebuild many items. Also consider that the number of individual parts that must be stocked in order to cover the many variations of a assembly causes more capital to be tied up than if a complete unit is stocked instead. The rebuild industry has declined in recent years so much that now the ASE has decided to eliminate it's Engine Machinist test series. As far as mechanic versus technician, much of that is just an image type of thing being pushed by manufacturers. At some point in the past, "mechanic" was viewed as a dirty and greasy job, so it was changed to "technician" which I suppose was seen as cleaner and more "white collar" (why this would be desirable in the trucking industry I don't know). It seems like "technician" has come to have a negative connotation and means less "hands on" I think Mark is right on the money. A little extra time inspecting a truck and a firm understanding of the workings of various systems on a truck go a long way towards making a lasting repair.
  16. Several years ago I read an article in Readers Digest about the Brown Recluse (AKA Violin or Fiddle Back spider, I believe). A few days later my sister got a bite like you. Just kidding around with her about it I mentioned the Brown Recluse. Long story short, she still has a small chunk missing out of her shin where she was bitten. They seem to like hiding in the drawers of furniture.
  17. I talked to one of our local ABF drivers today. The terminal here hasn't got any of the new trucks assigned to them yet, but they had one here the other day covering for a truck that was down for maintanence. He said he really liked it.
  18. There have been problems with the headlight switches failing prematurely due to current spikes. I have also seen this sort of problem when the wrong headlamp switch has been installed. The switches for the different chassis that Mack manufactures often use switches that are similar in appearance but that have different pin locations.
  19. It took me a while to find it, but the additive is called Bulldog® Power Divider Top Treat, The Mack part number is 9853-PDT1. According to Mack this additive is designed to prevent power divider snapping or binding. If power divider snapping or binding is experienced, this additive should be added at each rear axle gear oil change. One container (20 fl.oz.) is required for each carrier. I can't speak to it effectiveness, as I have never had the opportunity to use it, wouldn't think it would hurt anything though.
  20. Randy, you should have a plug on the differentials (on the back side, just above the mounting flange) so you can drain the pinion housing oil (aka top housing). You'll be draining the oil from both the top compartments and the axle housings as well as the power divider. I think Mack still has a recommended lube additive for the power divider that has some kind of high end EP rating and a bunch of friction modifiers.
