I have gave up on getting the pete home, I plan on going to Portland with my pick up and trailer and getting it myself. I plan to take the wife and make a trip of it, see mount rushmore and the pacific northwest, and how could we forget the west's finest jewel...Packer. We are going the last week of march. Hope to see some more friends along the way. Fred

I am thinking of buying a auxilery trans, It is in central California and I need it shipped to Indiana or somewhere close. Thanks Fred

Hi, I would like to recommend that you look on the top of the diff and slightly to the left of center looking down, there will be a 1 inch square pad with all the info you will need. The only problem I have seen is that if the diffs have been changed that sometimes a tag would be rivited to the housing there and somtimes the tag gets removed. If you are using this truck with any load at all with a 673, I would not go over 5.13 to 1, If you could up the horse power you may be able to go faster, but not loaded. I do have differental carriers and transmissions for sale if interrested Talk later Fred

Hi, I have a John bean fire bed and pump that is mounted behind the cab, It is not on a mack truck, but it would make lots of parts for one, Looks very simular to a b firetruck that I had before. Fred

Paul, If you wanted heavier valve springs for your 673, any camshaft grinder, (comp cams, isky, engle,ect...) could make valve springs in any configuration you desire. The info they would require is installed hight, diameter(i.d and o.d.), and seat presure desired. It would be very inexpensive. I plan on new valve springs for my engine, they are weak from years of working and then sitting( with a few compressed for who know how long while it sit) Morgan

I have read some paper work on the williams brake for cummins engines, It read that heavier valve springs were recommended and new valve keepers. I would assume that it would hold true on the mack engines as well. I would see how much spring load could be put on the cam without wiping a lobe off of the cam. I have 2 cummins engines with exhaust brakes and HAD one cat (1673 in a pete) and all were on the original line sheets for the trucks. I would look over the Peterbilt I sold to your uncle and see how the bolt patteren matches up to the mack. Later Fred

Hi, I have the chance to get a v8 from a b model truck, I was wondering if anyone here has any pictures of a b615 with the engine installed? I have the radiator and head lamps panels from a b 75 to complete the large radiator, I would have to fabricate the hood from scratch though. I was wondering about the fitment in the chassis, any thoughts??? Fred
-
I have found that b engines are quite plentful, I think for all the trouble you are having you could get a good runner engine off of someone here that has upgraded to a bigger engine. I have a 673 in my b 61, it runs very well but dosen't have a whole lot of power. 170 hp just don't get the dual tandem rolling very quick. I am going to install a 237 or ??? in it just for the extra horsepower. Fred

Hey guys, Looks like we are going to get these trucks home!! I hope It all works out, I can volenteer my parking lot for storage for awhile spanky untill you can get it to your place. We need to come up with a loading plan in Portland. keep you posted, Fred

Truck Needs Moved From Portland Or. To Indiana
b61fred replied to b61fred's topic in Transportation Board
I will give you a update on the petes where abouts... I talked to Packer about getting it to his place in wyoming a couple of weeks ago, He said he would get it to his place in October and it can sit there for awhile, so It is slowly moving across the lower 48, I think the wife and I can take it from Wyoming to home. looks like a road trip to Packer's place, If i could get something to take from Indiana to Wyoming that would be nice, I have a 32 foot trailer ..... any ideas?????? Fred -
Hi, I have bought a truck in Portland OR. and need a ride home or at least closer to home. I can't take a week off of work to haul it home, but if I could get it part of the way I could get it on a weekend or?? Please contact me cj5fred@aol.com or on this board. The truck is a tandem axle conventional not a super long wheel base so it could share a load with another truck. I also have a possible another truck to fill a load with two trucks both in Portland area mine needs to go to Indiana and the other to Tenn. area. Thanks Fred p.s. I know it not a Mack.... don't hold it against me!

Hi, I have seen the tr 67 series trans behind the 673 engines before, the trans that I would use would be a tr 72 series, I think what hapened when the former owner installed the diesel engine and removed the gas, the gas engine would rev much higher than the diesel, inturn droping the max rpm of the whole drive line. The solution is to install higher gear ratios in the rear to get some road speed. I have some differentals that may help you out, I would sell them reasonable price. I live in Indiana, but with our new part transit system we could get them to you... Fred

on this site there is a link to all the wiring diagrams, it has one for the serries parallel switch. These can be very tricky to wire. Although a 24 volt stater will crank and start a truck on 12 volts. I have done it to get a truck home, so you can take some time and install the switch correctly. Fred
-
hi, the starter should be 24 volt, should be a small tag on the starter to verify voltage if you like. The crank should turn by hand, see if you can give the harmonic balancer a good twist with both hands it should turn. If the engine is seized it has been my experience to go ahead and remove the cylinder heads, why?? I have found out that if the cylinder is rusty and you get it broke loose, all the rust and carbon pile up ontop of the pistions and with the high commpression of the diesel, will bend the rods when all the trash on the top of the pistons tries to be compressed. It wouldn't be a bad idea to check the valves to see if they are stuck open by a valve guide sticking. I assume you will be making a stand to run the engine on???? If the engine is too far gone and can't make it run you could make a cut away out of it and take it to truck shows, that would be neat.... Fred

No cabs or people were harmed while performing this stunt..... This cab was so rusty that the windshield was tring to come on in the cab with me. What started all of this was, I sold Paul some square tanks, the ones I was going to sell were worse than I thought so I decided to remove the ones on my driver b61. I was planing to install round alum. tanks any way so this would be the kick in the Butt I needed to get that job done. When I removed the tanks I found out that was what was holding up the cab. I thought I would set the good cab I have on the frame and test out my wiring and hang all my sheet metal to test fit everything. Fred

Hi all.. I removed the steering wheel and got the cab off last night. I tried Rob's "plan B" method first, I will say that this wheel was on there!! Anyone that has met me in person knows that I am doing my shoping at the big and tall store, I pulled and pushed on that wheel untill I bent the wheel into a nice cone shape, (P.S. looking for new steering wheel now!) I finally made a puller that went around the spokes and used a socket on the tube not to tear up the threads. after several tries the wheel came loose. After that we chained up the old cab and removed it from the frame, one of the chains sliped and it ended up coming off with the floorboards up and the roof down on the shop floor. (I don't know what happened, It spun around very quickly) no one got hurt and the cab couldn't get any worse. Thanks for all the help Fred

Hi, I need some help, I removed the horn button on the b61 to remove the steering wheel and found that there's no way to pull the steering wheel off of the shaft, also the shaft is hollow and would require an adapter to set the puller on the shaft. How have all of you done it. I plan to remove it tonight so I can remove the cab Thanks Fred

I have read the proceedure to installed these bushings in the manual for my truck. It said to use dishwashing soap to lube the bushings, I would say greese or oil would have softened to natural rubber ones used in the old days, the soap would just dry up I guess. Fred

b61fred replied to B66's topic in Truck Shows and Events
Hi, Well guys, I don't know what the future hold for my truck collecting days sence the big wedding day is July 7. Sooo... I am collecting all I can untill then. I had to sell my pete to Paul's uncle, why? because I shot him a price and he took it. ( note to self, don't price anything again!). So I told all my truck buddies that she made me sell it. After several months of this, she told me to find another one so I will Shut up about the pete. I am confused but I got another truck out of it. ( sorry its not a mack) Fred -
