Was their parking lot in the bayou? Not sure of any additive. Best thing is to use quality gear lube and have it tested. Use GO-H or GO-H/S grade. Axle housing is stamped with info on the backside offset to the right side. A little wire brushing should reveal it.

It may change the tire profile somewhat. There are indeed a bunch of wedge depths available depending on rims, spacer widths, etc. It seems that "most" rear wheel wedges are OK if there is an air gap between the heel and spoke. Mack engine is "1". Any Mack engine available in that model and year is "1". 6 cylinder or 8 were "1". Cummins is "3". CAT is "5".
