Sounds like you are gaining on it. Balancing the drives may help a little. Your tire guy probably told you that a balanced tire/wheel combo doesn't mean that it is round. No balancing will ever solve a bent wheel. My tire guy told me one time that he could balance a square block but I wouldn't like the ride! What did you find out on the hub damage mentioned in your first post?

Mack didn't stop making the flat back U model. After 1981, order a truck with either a flat back cab or Plus 3 cab.

I should have checked out the door tag but I didn't. Don't know why? This was at a show so the card in the window may be a typo? Could be a bitsa made up of several years to keep the truck in good working order? The DM and R models got the Plus 3 cab in the early 70's but the U model didn't get the Plus 3 cab until 1981 or so. This would allow the U model to still have the shorter BBC measurement with a flat back cab. With length laws relaxing, BBC measurements become less of an issue.

New England Motor Freight was a casualty in the LTL shipping business. It has been updated to a later +3 cab because a 1974 U model should have a flat back cab.

Sorry, no pictures. I don't even own that truck anymore. Here is a drawing of what it looked like. Made a metal circle larger than the access hole. Bent a couple of tabs down the same diameter of the access hole. The tabs and the weight of the floor mat kept it from moving around. Being that yours is a fire rig with probably no floor mat, I would use a piece of metal held in with a couple of screws or Dzus fasteners that could be obtained through a local hot rod shop or Summit Racing. I've done the same thing. It made checking the fluid level a breeze.

I had some old Pete brochures and my recollection is that the trucks were photographed with the wiper blade in the horizontal position. I like them vertical as well. A lot of modern Pete drivers that sit on the floor need them vertical so the blades don't block their line of sight!

The supply of non-ethanol sometimes can be iffy in my parts. Knock on wood, I have used lots of "corn" in my two stroke equipment and have never had a fuel related issue. I always use Stihl 2 cycle engine oil in the fuel mix.

Sounds like it is time for a new seat!
