  1. A friend of mine still has an everyday B81 driver...out of the B Models the 81SX was my favorite. All the trucks I've owned inlcuding the DM600 I have now are all heavy spec, 58's 20 front...I've also had 65's and 80k rears...I know I'm nuts lol! But I love the big old tanks, no matter what you throw at em they just ask for more
  2. 12-24.5 I went with the Continental HCS heavy construction tires...24.5 rubber is quite pricey. I'm not looking forward to replacing the rears in the spring
  3. $1000.00 bucks for new steering tires today...ouch! I thought Santa Clause was going to bring them until the wife informed me that the North Pole was out on strike this year due to contract issues with Mr Clause and the elf's foreman
  4. Try checking the thermostat, could be a cool running stat. If so I would replace with a 180 degree
  5. There is no stopping what has been created with the outsource of labor. Greed has taken the place of pride in corporate minds. The children of today have no interest in working with there hands...we are a dying breed, I hate to say it. Even our children who were brought up around trucks and take pride in what was built here buy our brothers and sisters only account for 1 in maybe a million of kids today so in reality the kids we see on "jersey shore" and MTV and god knows whatever else are going to be the ones in charge 20 years from now...like I was saying buckle up boys...and girls! We are in for a ride
  6. Credence is good...better run thru the jungle But I dunno bout that Onan, the wife might want to shoot me for the Detroit screamin thru the night...maybe I should just get a 5 horse Briggs and call it a day
  7. Vibrations are a nightmare to find on a Mack...usually its trial and error, been there done that. You can jack the truck up and block it in the air, run it thru the gears and try and pinpoint where the noise / vibration is coming from with the truck actually running and driving "in place" sounds hairy but we do it all the time. It just sucks to be pulling everything apart. You might just have to rebuild the power divider and not the whole rear.
  8. Split rim tires are good, I've been running big 24 inch tube type rubber since I got into trucking going on 17 years now. You just have to pay attention to safety while servicing them. My opinion if you have no experience with split rim tires...take them to a shop and have a pro mount them for you. Better safe then sorry
  9. I my friend have had enough of the Long Island lifestyle, 31 years was 30 1/2 too many LOL! I hear you on all the mom and pop stores going under its a shame, really is
  10. Buckle up boys and girls the next 50 years is going to be one hell of a ride! LOL When push comes to shove, I'll be up in the mountains with my vintage trucks, powering my home with an old 671 Detroit genset drinking cheap beer and listening to Johnny Cash on the record player
  11. If all else fails as long as the brakes are released disconnect the driveshaft or pull the axles if you need to move it. Sounds like it might be the shift forks, although the stick is in neutral it may still be in gear. I'm no expert in fire rigs but I've had my fair share of worn out shift towers jamming the tranny in gear and renedering the stick useless.
  12. Wind, rain...I forgot to contact mother nature and let her know I had a list of outside chores to do today :(

Tell me about it, only when i have to be outdoors does it seem to rain!

  13. The one I regret letting go was my 69 DM800 I sold her off on Ebay and she went down to Peru. Beautiful truck although it had a lot of rust in the rails
  14. I think its a good thing, I'd rather see them being used and we all know they do get used when shipped...I've seen pictures of trucks from Nigeria hauling 35 to 40 ton in a 10 wheel DM800! Now that my friends is what a Mack was built to do 80K rears, triple chassis = 1 tough truck! I also agree I LOVE the "down under" Macks, they have a look that is second to none I have a thing for steel nose RD's (flintstones) I've owned a few...you dont see them much in the states anymore
  15. 2 ton hoist will work fine, dont forget the 2 bolts inside the side cover Are there metal shavings on the magnetic plugs? Before you pull it all apart I would check for shavings, loose yokes in the jack and main shafts, bad U-joints etc. How many miles did you put on it with the power divider locked?
  16. Coming thru Texas in a few weeks via I-40 have that brush, some pulled pork BBQ and an RC pop ready...we'll get that brush pile a burnin!
  17. Hey Bigen, did they close 80? When I was out there last month we bunked up in Laramie...I had a slight leak in my exhaust elbow right under the sleeper so you know what that means...no heat while parked it was one chilly October night in cowboy country!
  18. I love Wyoming, it does get bad on 80 I've never ran it myself in the snow but I heard from a friend that the fire hydrants at the FMC mine are 15 feet in the air, thats alot of snow! I'm moving to Mount Charleston NV...at the peak of the mountain they get 25 plus feet of the white stuff on average. Best of both worlds though, drive 20 minutes down the mountain and its 60 degrees
  19. In the maintenance history did he do the lower end (rods and mains)? Also check for SOS results (oil samples) I mean for a quick turn around I'm sure you would do ok as long as it runs, has minimum blow by and holds good oil pressure at full operating temp. Cat made a great non emmision engine as long as they never mixed antifreeze and kept up on the P.M. I think you should do good
  20. Good engine, just very pricey when things go wrong. Drove a few with my union...cant complain. Resale should be good. Would it be possible for you to do an SOS on it prior to purchase?
  21. Just went thru Wyoming about a month ago, missed the white stuff...going to be a bad one this year, I'll be running 40 next trip!
  22. My Harley is away until spring! Took a ride last week and froze my butt off. I dont like the cold but love playing in the snow with the heavy iron
  23. I sure hate to see our history being exported outside the U.S. But the bright side is the trucks will continue to provide years of reliable service. So, keep them here not running due to weight laws and DOT headaches or send them overseas to live and run once again on the open road. Its a tough call, but in my opinion I'd rather see the truck running then being cut up for scrap. Any opinions on this one? I myself have sent a few over and regret it now...
