Basically you need a PP1 series air valve for the dashboard, a TP3 series tractor protection valve for the rear of the cab the air hoses attach to, and E3 series foot valve for applying service brakes, and a R12 valve to actuate the spring brakes. The Bendix website or has been mentioned here is a great asset. Your choice with either 24/24, 24/30, or 30/30 spring brake chambers but 30/30 are most common and least expensive. Rob
  2. Daryll is a nice guy and avid collector. I had him bring a truck home from Abilene TX, and wouldn't hesitate to use him again. He worked it so he had minimum deadhead miles, and enough to cover the cost of operation of the truck. He then picked up another load before heading home. It didn't take but a couple of weeks to get all worked out logistically.Rob
  3. I would run three starting batteries and a single deep cycle with a battery isolator on the deep cycle. Two starting batteries is marginal in colder climate during the winter months with his size engine. If you install two isolatos with one having an adjustable "pinch off" voltage, all four batteries could be used in the accessories mode. The first isolator would cut the starting batteries out of the circuit yet allow them enough contained energy to start the vehicle. The deep cycle cell could be run to very near completly flat in charge. Deep cycle batteries suffer from what is known as "memory effect" meaning the large amount of inrush current used for starter motor cranking can reduce the instantaneous available current in repeated use of it's purpose. Basically, they will deplete faster when used in the deep cycle environment. Deep cycle batteries are constructed to where they will absorb the near complete discharge and a recharge cycle repeatedly. Starting batteries are not and will decay in service ability very quickly when used in the deep cycle role. Rob

  7. Most trucks use a 2" 10 spline input shaft. I've replaced several Mack five speeds with both Mack, and Fuller transmissions without replacing the clutch but strongly prefer to change it also when apart. It is a maintenance type thing and expensive to take a truck out of service a second time. This is especially true when the "well shit", why didn't I just do it right the first time factor is accounted for. The original clutch is prolly working very hard right now to start off heavy loads so will have considerable wear from the start of your changover. I've never seen Mack built multi speed rears. Most I've been around are Eatons. I too prefer the air shifted as opposed to electric. If a guy opens up the air flow orifice they will shift very fast in either direction. The electric shifted axles I've been around are fine but become "finiky" after they age if they are used regularly. Rob

  9. I like "Deka" branded industrial batteries by East-Penn. It is about all we use high vibration environments. Optima batteries are very good in this application as they use absorbed glass mat fiber which stands up well to harsh environments. What ever you purchase about every month or so, using a spray bottle of baking soda and water, spray the tops of the batteries and wash them clean. There are minute trace currents always leaching from the cells due to corrosion and this actually shortens the lifespan due to internal heating. Rob
  10. Thanks Mike, all my Maxidyne engines were gold, then this red engine which is a 1980, and my E6-350 is light blue. As I understand when this 315 engine of mine was inframed, it had new cylinder heads installed and they are dark gray.Rob

  13. I was talking to a guy today and he kept the top covers and air shift stuff from his 12 speed when it went bad. Will this stuff work on a TRDL-1071 trans? I seen a set of shift forks on the floor beside the top covers but he couldn't remember if they were from the 12 speed or not. Rob
  14. I don't know for certain. The truck left with several others out of the yard. Could have went to an auction. The name was spray painted over on the doors as usual and the cab was rusty, but it supposedly ran well. Uncle Rob

  16. Last fall there was a Detroit powered "U" model at the YRC terminal in Morton, IL. I actually seen it dropping off a piece of freight. I use YRC due to contract and I personally just like the guys there. They were not running the truck and it was being rotated out. It disappeared shortly afterward. It was pretty rough but supposed to run good. Uncle Rob
  17. I've never driven a "U" but have a couple of "DM" series trucks. They are "tight" for me. I did not know the dimensions for either axle to back of cab but both are short. The "DM" series is tough to work on as I can vouch for. Something is always in the way. I have put a "U" model hood on a "DM" truck and did not have problems and everything fit fine. My nephew is gonna hook me up with a test ride in a "U" sometime in the future however. Rob

  23. Back in 88 my hairline had receeded just back of my ears. It was all gone and I started shaving my skull in 95. Then I got the bump that looked like a point evened out of my cranial area in 99. After the scars healed and the redness went away, I looked about 1/2 way normal. Rob
  24. Looks to me like you are rotating the crankshaft for positioning of port closing time. I don't know how you would adjust injection pump pressure by the photo indication. You prolly meant injection pump timing however and this would be correct. Little easier on an engine stand eh? Rob
  25. You would be better off changing the transmission and recalibrating the injection pump to "Thermodyne" settings. Rob
