1968 Mack R Tractor
Rob replied to j hancock's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
I like the taller sidewalls of the 22" and 24" tube type tires myself. I have new 10.00RX22 rubber on my B-61 project and would purchase more if could be found. -
I really like that right there. Kinda like asking a current and young "trucker" to operate an auxiliary transmission these days. Of course more and more don't know anything but three gears, Park, Reverse, and Drive too.
-
That is accurate on both accounts. I had Haggerty years ago and they do not allow any hauling. At that time you had to cover a trailer separately to pull with them. Gulfway allows the pulling of a trailer, but offer no cargo insurance so you can't really haul anything with the insured and it be covered. The "cargo" whether owned or not, required a separate policy. I keep one truck on my shop policy in force at all times as it's just a phone call to my insurance broker to swap trucks to the one I'm going to operate. Never have had a problem with this over the years but I'm never operating more than one at a time and not for hire. He's independent and we survey carriers every couple of years and I really don't know whom the current provider is.

I got the flashing lights a lot last week when overtaking, or merging into slower moving trucks. That said, I don't remember a single, Swift, JB Hunt, Schneider National, or Werner driver extending the courtesy.
-
I can believe it. I ceased with trucking in early 1984 and everything I worked on was used and older then. Being lowest on the totem pole got me in that position time and time again with the order to not talk about wages as I made more than the other two but got things done faster. A master disconnect is a good idea as parasitic draw through leaky alternator diodes, memory retention in electronics, keep alive circuits, etc. are all an electrical draw although it should be in the milliamperes at most, but as things age, the draw can increase.

People are so brainwashed by the profuse marketing blared at them from corporations with something to sell, (toilet paper in this case) they have never had to experience, (or even know of) other options prior to convenience products being developed. When my daughter in law first come around she was appalled that all we had was an "outhouse" to use at our family property, no running water, and "only", a trailer house for eating, sleeping, and getting out of the rain. The mobile home was actually a step up from the original surplus Army mess tent in the years prior.

Should be six check valves in there. Three on the up, three on the downstroke of the diaphragm. They like to stick when getting old. I just rebuilt both mine last year. Found everything online easily with the pump number for about $25.00 each kit.

It takes all kinds they say.

I have a "Rest Rite" sleeper out back of the shop but it is gutted. The metal is decent from memory but a guy gave it to me to use on one of my R models and I don't think I will after all. If something you would be interested in I'll grab some photos but you would need to purchase it through whom I got it from. I could bring it to Macungie, or Lititz later this year when I'm out there. I need a really good reason to make the trip so hopefully you'll give me that reason.....

Desperate times require desperate measures and they are holding the short end of the stick with the upcoming election. They aren't too stupid to realize they're beaten before the opening gate.

Last one looks like a bull dyke.

All trucks I've been around using a voltmeter are not wired through any relay and B+ is applied at all times. Easily changed to suit but I've never seen one originally like that myself in the now antique trucks.

MB steering wheel
Rob replied to Frank Y's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Here are a few of the 20" wheel I have. Don't think it's from an MB as described: Looks to be 1.00" 36 spline count so appropriate for a mack steering shaft. I've still not figured out where it came from. -
I don't know if I miss them or not. That Silverado truck I drive I really do not like the factory mirrors even though the lower section is a spot mirror on both sides. I cannot get a full view field where I need it seemingly with that combination of both mirrors. To get good vision when rounding a tight right turn to keep eye on the trailer side, I have to raise up quite a bit to see out of the standard mirror as the normal seating position places me square in the spot mirror line of sight which is a distorted view in this scenario. That is a personal issue I know but I'm thinking of placing camper type mirrors up onto the front fenders and doing away with the factory spot mirrors. I don't believe one can have too much vision access. I don't have them, nor have had on any of my trucks but am a big fan of spot mirrors with a wide field of vision if they can be fitted. On my trucks I've always had spot mirrors on the top and bottom braces of the "West Coast" style mirror brackets. One of course to look at the stack smoke when in the throttle which is a thing of beauty to me. Don't think it's just me as the prior driver pushed the rub rail in pretty good on an implement when he got the right side of the trailer into it. He also didn't like the field of view but quit shortly afterward.

That 2200 series Kubota was one of the most reliable diesels built when run as reefer duty mandates. 20K hours is not unusual. Isuzu was another good one as was were Perkins a bit earlier in times gone by.

MB steering wheel
Rob replied to Frank Y's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Thanks Paul; The wheel I have appears to have the same horn button but the bottom is more like an R model steering mast jacket, (larger base circle) where the photo is more like the B series steering column. I'm going from memory however which is not all that good any longer..... -
Hi Leon; They certainly look nice. I'd found a pair many years ago painted over with spray paint but appeared perfect. I had them professionally polished after stripping them clean and they'll go onto one of my trucks someday. Mine are 22.5" also.

MB steering wheel
Rob replied to Frank Y's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Could one of you guys post a photo of an original MB wheel? I have a black one in the shop with an aluminum horn button that is black and silver. I don't know what the wheel is from but it is smaller than an R series used although the larger opening than a B series on the bottom. -
Make you up a little pump like this and the task of priming is easy: A manual transfer pump like you would use in a pickup bed, some fittings, and hose is all you need. This one has worked for me probably a hundred times so far.
-
Those do look nice. I think I have the same ones but it's been years since I had them out of the box. Are those 22.5" rims?

You'll have a lot more room under the hood with a C8.3 Cummins for sure. Plenty of power too. You going to air to air it or run without intercooling? I've had C series on generator sets push 300kw for hours on end but they will require charge air cooling. Versatile tractors used the series juiced to 350hp and they will live if not abused. -
I always got along with the Amish in this area, and Mennonites. The Amish, I could repair their generator sets so they could make cabinetry with power tools, and have running water courtesy of pumps..... The Mennonites, extend common courtesy such as get a door for one of the ladies and the whole family extends gratitude. I've always admired their desire to "not" fit in, and practice many of the old ways of life myself. They don't bother me, nor I them, and it works well.

Never have been asked to do that myself. I expect I'll get some use out of the water truck starting next month when people around here start with the swimming pools. Two years ago the local town sold the water supply to American Water for badly needed cash and the infrastructure needing rebuild. American has spent almost five million dollars in upgrades in that timeframe and agreed to hold the current rates two years to which that agreement expires in May. Local newsprint, (rag) is already harping about a 20% increase in rates to take effect. Last year it was less expensive to run the seven miles distant to the next little town, load 5000 gallons and deliver than to fill here in town. I expect I'll be doing the same again.
-
Yup. Use a brown one, then a white one to see if you need another brown one.....

Mine failed with a a GM 3.4ltr engine going into a Monte Carlo which is not a heavy engine by any means.
