  2. I have several friends that haul new Caterpillar equipment out of Morton, IL at both Daily Express, and Keen Transport. That heavy stuff is hard on equipment without a doubt. I've seen a lot of guys run older equipment that is way overbuilt for average trucking and not have problems constantly. Then again, there are guys that run new trucks and seem to have more breakdowns from wear and abuse than properly rebuilt and maintained older stuff. One of the guys actually runs a 1977, or 1978 4300 series IH tractor and always is permitted when hauling usually with parts of a new D-10, or D-11. The engine is a Cummins built by Pittsburg Power and dynos a little over 800hp for short periods. I know the radiator is near eight inches thick in the core to cool it too. I don't know what trans is in the truck, but the rears are two speed in the mid 6.XX on the low, and high 4.XX on the high side and it gets used. It is interesting to listen to him take off from a stop with a D-10 minus the "U" frame, blade, and ripper teeth in the upshift. You can hear the rear(s) on the upshift with the distinctive teeth mesh. I think he spends all his money on Talbert brand trailer as he has three of them and seems to have a new one each year. Rob
  3. I've certainly had a lot of them, (mostly Eaton) and have never torn up a set. The electric motors however are a weak point. Never have had an ounce of trouble with an air shifted rear axle though. You are correct in that a lot of shops don't know how to work on, or set them up properly, but when set up and maintained, they work really well. Rob
  4. Putting a hanging pedal in the cab is a good idea as you can do away with the holes in the floor pan. The newer trans uses a pull type clutch where your original duplex uses a push type such as in a light truck with manual transmission. The trans will fit but will be tight. You will need to fabricate mounts using the originals, (or parts of them) for a pattern to mate up with the existing frame mounts. This is of course assuming you don't want to make your own from scratch. I would go with a little faster rear axle gear if it were me as the trans is direct in high gear. You will like that transmission cause you drive it like a straight five speed most always. Rob

    Thanks David. I've never had heated mirrors on a truck before but can figger it out with the current rating. Nichrome wire has a common resistance value of .2 ohms per ft. of installed length. Rob

    My 12V-71 did have 12 thermocouples installed into the exhaust manifolds, but the left side cracked back in 1989 and the replacement manifold was not drilled and tapped. Shortly after the replacement, the maintenance proceedures changed and we no longer had to monitor each cylinders' temperature so they were never reinstalled. I still have the rotary switch and meter panel for selection of each cylinder. I was thinking of incorporating this setup into the dash of the truck using the larger pyrometer. Rob
  10. Does anyone know the resistance value of the heating elements used in exterior mirrors? I'm going to modify a set of bubble back style for my R model. I already have a couple of thermostat buttons to use to regulate the temperature but don't want to break the glass by getting them too hot. Thanks, Rob

    How common were these things in the 3.375" diameter style in Macks? I have one NOS in the box from the speedo shop I worked at and purchased another off of ebay to use in my 1977 R model when the V12 goes in. Mostly I've seen the 2.063 diameter gauges installed into the dashboards, but have seen a few of these also. The larger ones will certainly be easier to view. Rob

  13. I don't know about heavy trucks but for automobiles and lt. trucks, rear turn signals were not mandated in USA until the 1959 model year. If your truck is prior, or the electrical print is earlier than 1959, they could very well could have not been original equipment on the rear of the truck. Rob
  14. You split the gears if loaded. It will drive like a straight 5 if you want to but the gear spread is very wide. Rob
  15. Trent: Let's carry on with this as all the information I've obtained on the truck is third party. Be interested to learn more. The only thing for certain on with mine is I'm the third owner and have spoken with the second, and the original purchaser's son. I also have the shipment order from Caterpillar containing the engine my truck was built with, and still resides in the chassis. There is certainly more room for investigation...... Rob
  16. The hood was being sold along with a few other small parts in PA during the 1997 show season from this truck in mention. This is about all I know about it. From my understanding it was the third and final RL755LST produced although I can't prove otherwise. It was titled a 1981 model. Mine, (RL755LST35359) is the second truck produced, is the only remainder, and titled a 1978. Rob

  22. It will hold up good with an easy throttle foot and sensible treatment. A "Maxitorque" will eventually fail with abusive treatment although they are much heavier built for the "Maxidyne" high torque rise series of engine. Rob

    Has anybody ever weighed a fully dressed "R", or "B" series cab? I don't want to overbuild an elevating universal cab stand. Thanks, Rob
