  2. Prices like those made it worth the 2.5hrs I spent fashioning a new one to fit with my brake, then welding it onto the original stamping. After glass beading, then epoxy priming, followed with a 2K industrial topcoat I expect it will far outlast the original including the truck.

  7. You get that everywhere as people exist in "their" own little world. Complacency and ignorance are everywhere. Our little town purchased a new John Deere compact tractor and towed "street sweeper" which really does a nice job last year. Get caught dumping an ash tray in town and you'll get a citation for $150.00 on short order too. Let your grass grow a month without mowing? $75.00 citation will show up in your mailbox. Noisy dog, same $75.00 citation. You want to clean up a mess you got to hit where it hurts most. The ash tray reference is not fallacy either. Guy in town dumped his pickup ash tray in the street and was issued the citation for "littering". He went to court and not only was the citation upheld, he also incurred court costs of $175.00 for his "efforts". He did not appeal the judgement.
  8. Been buddies with my insurance man for a lot of years and he keeps me covered. I tell him I'm going to drive something for a short "jaunt", he writes a quick binder and off I go. Tell him when I'm done and the paperwork is done away with. Of course my shop coverage takes care of anything I transport and personal vehicles with that policy being kept in place full time.
  9. My shop property has 350' of frontage road being a heavily traveled state highway and I have to clean the ditch in front every week prior to mowing. I've recently started mowing the neighbor's ditch also which is another 140 feet and it wasn't mowed for years. State highway comes by twice per year and knocks it down, but the garbage is not picked up so buried in the chaff. We spent a couple of hours last spring cleaning it out and it really looks nice being mowed/groomed weekly now. I've been out on the tractor actively mowing and seen people throw their trash out into my path as the ride down the roadway.

  11. I really don't have a good photo of mine but the mounts are a series of flat strap and square tubing welded together in a framework. This is the only photo I can find for now. I'll be out to the shop tomorrow and can grab more:

  13. Blain's "Farm and Fleet" here in the midwest stocks a pretty good supply of "Mystik" lubrication products. A couple of other farm store chains do also, but I don't much get in to them very often.

Only reason I'm any kind of loyal to Mobil is I know several Caterpillar engineers personally in engines, transmissions, and drive axle departments whom seemingly swear by Mobil products for initial fill in new machines. All the Cat plants in this area are serviced by the little oil supplier, (whom is not so little any longer) here in Farmington. Hopefully that continues to be good for them, but knowing the way Caterpillar operates, it can be questionable long term.
  15. I cut the sump off a CH613 and welded a new one on last year. Ridiculous is what the pricing is for replacements.

  17. Lot of things killed them off around here. Crate engines and transmissions marketed by the major parts stores, complete radiators and starters available for less $$$ than parts can be rebuilt locally for, fuel injection cleaning up the byproducts of combustion lengthening the service intervals between major repair(s), EPA, gasoline costs driving the cost of racing exponential, insurance, machine tool costs to not need a skilled operator, etc. It's all factors and those machine shops that remain are quite expensive to use anymore. The ones around here remaining are down to just a couple of employees and sometimes begging for work.

  19. Over time you will be pleased with the consistent results that oil provides. It is especially well suited to older Mack engines where ash deposits were a major sludge contributor in mechanical engines.

I've used my R612 several times to pull a loaded trailer which has sunk back up. 1/2" plate with a chain and loop welded to it for the winch hook to grab slid into the small part of the king pin of the trailer and the oomph of the winch usually pulls them right up. Had the front wheels on the tractor hanging a few times but the trailers usually pop free with jogging of the winch, and weight of the truck, (leverage). Had one trailer stuck and along with the truck hanging with the wheels in the air, two porta powers pushing up on the trailer when it popped free. That one was a chip trailer at a then local sawmill which is now gone. Still have my "cribbing" in the shop used for this purpose made from 6X6 oak slabs too.
  22. Most of the R models through the years I've seen have had the immersion heater installed and the receptacle cover in the left headlamp bucket as we've seen. I've also seen them around the left front cab mounting, but that probably depends upon customer request.
  23. Good friend down the road has a 2001 Western Star, (4900?) and is very clean and personalized a lot. Lot's of brightwork and extras installed. Series 60 Detroit with high horse settings from a lot of aftermarket add ons.
  24. good deal as it looked like a crack from your original photo posting. I don't remember seeing anything like that in mine but it is probably a floor stiffener so the vibration is transferred more through the cab than concentrated in one spot.
  25. Always thought those were good looking trucks. Remember them well but really know nothing about them.
